PM Overload: Why India’s Product Managers Are Facing an Identity Crisis . . India's tech landscape is buzzing with an influx of aspiring Product Managers (PMs). But with abundance comes competition, and with competition, the inevitable rise of shortcuts and quick-fix courses. The question is: Are PMs in India at risk of becoming the next wave of digital marketers—plentiful but diluted in quality? The numbers game: (Src: Edureka, Payscale) Associate Product Managers (APMs): 30,000 - 50,000 Product Managers: 100,000 - 120,000 Senior Product Managers: 30,000 - 40,000 Group Product Managers: 8,000 - 10,000 With over 150,000 active and aspiring PMs across various levels, the competition is fierce. This isn’t just a battle for jobs; it’s a race to stand out in a sea of resumes. The rise in numbers isn’t surprising, given the multitude of industries now embracing product management roles. From technology and e-commerce to healthcare and manufacturing, companies are hiring PMs to steer their product strategy. Companies in the Game (Source: foundit India): Technology (Software, IT Services, Fintech): 1,500 - 2,000 companies E-commerce & Retail: 400 - 600 companies Banking & Financial Services: 300 - 500 companies Manufacturing & Industry: 200 - 300 companies Healthcare & Pharmaceuticals: 100 - 200 companies But here’s where it gets tricky. With so many opportunities, the demand for quick certifications and crash courses has surged, leading to a proliferation of product management programs. There are currently around 120 to 130 courses available across India, catering to the aspiring PM crowd (Source - upGrad KnowledgeHut, PremierAgile) But here's the catch: Not all PM courses are created equal. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of PM Courses Not all PM courses are created equal. While some programs provide in-depth knowledge and real-world experience, others might be little more than glorified PowerPoint presentations. Aspiring PMs need to tread carefully—choosing the wrong course could mean wasting time, money, and ultimately, stalling their career progression. The abundance of PMs in India is both an opportunity and a challenge. As the competition heats up, so does the pressure to be better, faster, and more qualified. But in this race, it’s essential not to lose sight of what truly matters—gaining real skills and experience that go beyond certifications. The approximate number of aspiring Product Managers in India is around 30,000-50,000, with many individuals enrolled in APM programs and transitioning from other fields. So, as India’s PM scene continues to grow, will the quality keep pace with the quantity? Over the last few years of working in the PM role, I have come across numerous times where my product metrics showed abnormal behavior and left me startled. . . In one of the companies I worked with, one fine day the number of users opening accounts with us went up by 500% without doing anything. Great, isn’t it? We didn’t do anything - no marketing, no product effort. Not so great - we didn’t know if it was genuine, fake, or what. This is a classic example of Root Cause Analysis (RCA) questions. If you are working as a PM, you must have come across similar situations multiple times where certain metrics changed very abruptly and left you startled. Don’t worry. You are not alone in this journey. Every PM encounters this. Here are a few more RCA examples to ponder upon: 1️⃣ DAU of YouTube suddenly increased by 30%. Could you figure out why? 2️⃣ Number of daily posts on LinkedIn dropped by 40% on a given day. You, as a PM at Linkedin, need to identify the reason(s) behind this and fix it. 3️⃣ Conversion funnel on Amazon from ‘Add to Cart’ to ‘Order successful’ dropped from 3% to 1% overnight. How will you bring it back to 3%? 4️⃣ Organic traffic for Quora dropped by 30% in a week. Why? 5️⃣ Direct traffic for The Times Of India website increased 100% in a week without any marketing. Overall traffic remained the same. Is it even possible? Can you figure out the possibilities? Why is this question type important? 1️⃣ It helps interviewers evaluate you on multiple concepts - user journeys, funnel conversions, etc. 2️⃣ Structured thought process - you need to have a structure in place to solve these questions, or else you will be all over the place. 3️⃣ Quantitative ability - can you think quantitatively? Or you rely on guesswork to solve problems. The most important part - how do you solve these questions? 1️⃣ Start somewhere from the middle of the journey. It will give you a direction on whether to move upstream (top of the funnel) or downstream (bottom of the funnel) to identify the issue. 2️⃣ Evaluate the user journey and funnel conversion numbers for pre and post-scenario. This will help you identify what part of the journey to focus on. 3️⃣ Look carefully at absolute numbers and percentages, together. Do not ignore any aspect. 4️⃣ Look at all possibilities - marketing, technical, copy, UI/UX, seasonal, regulatory, etc. that could have caused the anomaly. Liked this? A conversation with a friend who is now a seasoned Product Leader put me in a introspective spiral around how the expectations from PMs are changing --> 1) Its now no longer just ensuring you execute on the vision and deliver/launch a quality product ( not considering Principal PMs and above here ) 2) It has become more about organisations pivoting towards more niche requirements and expecting more on Strategy / Analytics / technical know how to be in a position to actually design & build something themselves, this is now becoming more of a norm in India now ( might have been like that in other countries already) 3) the experience ( # of years) does matter but only for leadership roles otherwise it is a very hard market to find that niche role for yourself 4) What skills should a PM focus on to break these barriers and ride on this next phase of growth --> [and am sure its not just AI :) ] ? Customers face challenges with fake delivery attempts, inadequate customer support technology, and unresolved issues. Customers don't like to pay for features they don't use. Other customers might actually pay extra to have that very same feature. A great example is a feature like single sign on - required for larger customers, useless to small ones. Let's unbundle a feature and make it an add-on. With Schematic it takes a few minutes.
