A significant milestone on the Sarvagram journey and we are very excited to continue our support to the stellar team. When we invested in 2022, we saw a distinctive company which was serving an unaddressed segment in a very large market i.e middle class households in rural India. The narrative around rural financing has primarily focused on farmers and low-income populations. However, there's a huge gap in addressing the needs of the aspirational rural middle class—the 80-100 million households with annual incomes ranging from ₹3-5L, spread across multiple income sources. This demographic is eager to improve both their income levels and quality of life, yet their financial needs have often gone unmet. Banks and microfinance institutions have targeted agriculture or low-income women but the rural middle class is a large whitespace. Though they may have access to product financing like two-wheeler or car loans, a significant portion of their aspirations remains unaddressed. SarvaGram is stepping into this gap with a holistic, customer-centric platform that offers a diverse range of financial services—from lending products and farm mechanization solutions to insurance offerings — as opposed to a mono-line strategy, which we believe works better in denser urban markets. In addition to our thesis on rural lending, we have found working with the stellar team, led by Utpal Isser and Sameer Mishra, a collaborative and insightful partnership. Their exceptional execution and understanding of the rural market have enabled SarvaGram to create lasting impact and drive sustainable growth. We are delighted to announce the close of Kedaara IV at USD 1.738bn, our fourth fund. We had a one and only close, and we completed the entire fund-raise in 4 months. This is an important milestone in Kedaara Capital's 12 year journey and comes at a time when the PE industry is fending off fierce headwinds and a challenging fund-raising environment. This article has some good data on the #wealthtech opportunity in #India. One stat in particular jumped out: " India’s ratio of mutual fund AUM-to-GDP is at 15% versus a global average of 75%, according to Macquarie" There will be lots of #AUM growth in this decade. Startups like Dezerv, Scripbox, Centricity etc have made the intial plays - the newer ones will have to come up with some distinct angle or #insight. SEBI is launching special call auctions for holding company stocks in October to boost trading activity and investor interest. This move could transform the market. The call auction system, used for infrequently traded stocks, could enhance transparency and accurate valuation by concentrating trades into specific periods, addressing the price inefficiencies holding companies suffer due to low trading volumes. SEBI envisions a vibrant marketplace where everyone has a fair trading chance. Annual call auctions could attract both institutional and retail investors, improving market perception and stock performance. However, success hinges on several factors. Firstly, educating investors is crucial. Fintech platforms and brokers must clarify the workings of holding companies and call auctions through webinars and research reports. Insurance infrastructure API platform Zopper has secured $25 million in a Series D funding round led by Elevation Capital, Dharana Capital, and Blume Ventures. The fresh proceeds have come for the Noida-based company after a gap of over two years. In September 2022, Zopper raised $75 million in a Series C round led by Creaegis, with participation from ICICI Venture, Bessemer Venture Partners, Tiger Global, and Blume Ventures. The new funds will be utilized to enhance Zopper's digital infrastructure, focusing on strengthening its insurance distribution platform, the company said in a press release. The investment will also support the growth of its bancassurance solutions and improve post-sales and service operations for its device and appliance protection segments. The 13-year-old Zopper helps companies offer various insurance products and provides end-to-end technology and service offerings to insurers. I'm incredibly excited to welcome Neeraj, Priya, and the Venture Highway team to General Catalyst. This is our way of saying we are doubling down on India and committed to the success of founders there at the earliest stages. I had the great fortune of starting my venture capital career in 2012 as a global investor. Back then, India barely had 100MM internet users. Today, there are over 800MM of them, second only to China globally. Something pretty magical happens when you get this kind of critical mass: unique pockets of consumer behavior emerge, these behaviors and cultural nuances get incorporated into products built by great founders, and sometimes these local phenomena become inspiration for further global technology adoption everywhere. When I started in this business, the whole world wanted to learn from the best consumer companies in Silicon Valley. A few years later, as China became the largest internet market, everyone wanted to know what was going on in that ecosystem. I'm a big believer that in the coming years India's 800MM+ (and growing) internet users will provide a lot of inspiration for some of the great products and technology businesses that are yet to come. In fact, this is already happenning. With the Venture Highway team, General Catalyst and I are excited to continue to back the best founders globally, and we believe India will be a significant part of that story.
