𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒔' 𝑨𝒑𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒂𝒄𝒉 To be able to understand this, we must deep dive into the reasons why Organizations invest in L&D & what are the specific needs of learners with respect to their learning. Let's start from the Organizations' perspectives... ~ The investment is to address talent concerns which in turn are associated with business cases unique to each organization ~ May it be any training, Organizations are most concerned with how effectively their teams are being able to reflect their learning in organizational growth ~ As skills have become more demanding in any given industry & learning technology become more sophisticated & convenient, Organizations expect their L&D teams to strike a perfect balance between the Training methods, where learners' satisfaction as a wholistic event may not get a priority against the Organizational goals. ~ Last but most important, the cost factor becomes a primary driving force. With significant cost reduction in overall Training expense, the Organizations preferred re-creating the Learning modules, making them more interactive, engaging & as effective as instructor-led training methods. The costs now gets invested in learning tech upkeep as: ~ cost of maintaining the software based learning systems ~ researching up-to-date course material ~ updating & maintaining learner's profile, monitoring learners' performance & awarding certifications These costs sometimes become equivalent to that of in-person programs but considering the repetitive requirements and with an inclination of being with the future advancements, this investment is still justifiable. From the Learner's perspective... ~ The primary metric of success of any L & D program is 'Learner's satisfaction'. Organizations tend to treat it as secondary for some of the obvious reasons; however, attention should be paid to the end result. ~ The satisfaction of learners is primarily derived from engaging with the facilitator in an interactive manner. Whichever platform offers this, where the learner gets an opportunity to share, discuss, ask questions, clear doubts and get motivation, gets preference by the learner. ~ Even the learner is concerned about the cost but more in the sense of time to be invested. Platform offering better convenience & flexibility in terms of time is preferred better. In-person training seldom offers such flexibility & hence hybrid model works the best here. ~ Learners' satisfaction ultimately gets reflected in the application of learning in the work. Platform offering post training hand-holding & support works the best here. To conclude, Both Learners & Organizations may have their owns agendas & concerns. However, the purpose, goal & desired outcome of the training paired with due acknowledgement of learning patterns & best derived retention strategies decide the choice of platform. Revisit your training moments with me. 1.Not Establishing Clear Objectives and Outcomes: Without clear goals and expected outcomes, both trainers and learners may lack direction. It's important to define what learners should achieve by the end of the training session. 2. Understanding Diverse Learning Styles: As a trainer, it's crucial to recognize that learners have different preferences for absorbing information. Some may be visual learners, others auditory, and some kinesthetic. 3. Overlooking Feedback: Feedback is essential for continuous improvement. Not actively seeking feedback from your students or failing to follow up on it can result in missed opportunities to enhance your training methods and address any issues that may arise. 4. Insufficient Preparation : Entering a training session without thorough preparation can lead to disorganization and a lack of confidence. In today's digital age, leveraging technology and various resources can enhance learning. Not utilizing these tools can make training sessions less effective and engaging. 5. Dominating the Session with Continuous Talking: Training should be interactive and engaging. When trainers talk non-stop without allowing for questions, discussions, or activities, it can lead to disengagement and reduced retention of information. 6. Overcomplicating the Material: Simplifying complex concepts is key to effective teaching. When trainers make the content overly complicated, it can overwhelm students and hinder their understanding and retention of the material. 7. Failing to Make Training Engaging : Training sessions should be dynamic and enjoyable to keep learners motivated and interested. Incorporating interactive elements, such as games, group activities, and multimedia, can significantly enhance the learning experience. 8. Ignoring Individual Progress and Learning Paces: Each learner progresses at their own pace. Not recognizing and accommodating these differences can leave some students behind while others may feel unchallenged. 9. Lack of Real-World Application and Examples: Providing theoretical knowledge without connecting it to real-world applications can make training seem abstract and less relevant. It's important to use practical examples and case studies. 10. Poor Time Management During Sessions: Effective time management is crucial to cover all necessary content without rushing or dragging out the session. Failing to manage time properly can lead to incomplete training or exhausted learners. Can Facilitation only be used in “Training”? A couple weeks ago, I was in Bangalore for a workshop, catching up with an old client over coffee. We were talking about the way forward, and some dire circumstances that demand attention. The usual stuff. Along the way, they mentioned about how the teams were struggling keeping up with too many (rather unproductive) meetings in a day. “If we keep attending meetings all day then when do we do the actual work?” “Too many meetings that could have just otherwise been an email fill our calendars up” “Everyone talks, nobody listens. After 3 hours of discussion we still have no consensus and no resolution. Then we have the next meeting for the same topic again.” “Any and every meeting has an agenda. But that’s quickly forgotten in the first 30 minutes, and the rest is just off-topic discussion” These were some statements thrown into the mix, while addressing their challenge to be more productive as a team. Don’t get me wrong, this is a very passionate team who loves their job and is attached to the greater good. “How about we try and facilitate one of your team huddles? Let’s see how that works out.” I quipped. The client was supportive enough to take the suggestion; and post-lunch we broke into a team huddle. I scribed my way through the meeting, encouraged metaphors into discussion, and each person had a designated time to speak. Questions were structured and specific, and the team was split into smaller groups that worked on 2 topics parallelly. All in all, the client was overjoyed to know that what would have otherwise blocked 4 working hours of their day; only took 1 instead. That too, with concrete CTA, next steps, and designated individuals who would lead the project. The scribing also saved them extra time and efforts to prepare a report and MOM.
