This is how Unchahar Thermal power plant was operated on 14th June 2024 (the pattern is similar everyday). Why does this matter ? Unchahar is a coal based power plant with rated capacity of around 1500MW. During day hours (also the time when solar is at it's peak). The plant operates at its technical minimum. The problem here is two fold, operating a thermal power plant at its technical minimum gives very low efficiency (high fuel costs), and ramping the power output up and down (technical minimum to near rated capacity in less than an hour). will cause huge wear and tear of the machinery (which will add to fixed and capital costs over time). This is not just one plant. If we consider data from NRLDC (Northern region load dispatch center). https://wbes.nrldc.in/xml/ , there are multiple Coal and gas power plants that are operating in such a situation. And many of them get AS_SHORTFALL (short for ancillary services), schedules to ramp up or ramp down their power production. This again will lead to extra costs that ultimately have to be borne by consumers or tax payers. In my opinion, batteries might still be somewhat costly for the Indian market if we consider the pure electricity price. However, using a mix of demand response and batteries could help in reducing costs for power producers and utilities (which will ultimately reduce the stress on tax payers and consumers). To reduce the dynamics of the load in the grid, and manage renewable generation more efficiently. Indian Oil & Gas sector’s big leap in the Green Hydrogen space: GAIL (India) Limited has installed its first Green Hydrogen Plant on 24th May, 2024 at GAIL Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh. The event was inaugurated by Shri Pankaj Jain, Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. In line with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, this step marks a major step towards foraying into new and alternate energy. This Green Hydrogen plant has a capacity of producing 4.3 TPD of Hydrogen, through 10MW PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) Electrolyzer units, by electrolysis of water using renewable power. The purity of hydrogen from this plant shall be 99.999% (by vol.) and will be produced at a pressure of 30 Kg/cm2. Initially the hydrogen produced from this unit shall be used as a fuel along with Natural Gas for captive purpose in the various processes and equipment running in the existing plant at Vijaipur. However, under a new policy, the gas allocation to the sector was cut by about 20%, the biggest reduction so far. Earlier in FY-24, it had already fallen from over 85% to around 72%. Now, gas from APM has dropped further to 49-50%, even though the government is promoting a gas-based economy, with CGD as a key focus. As of 31 October 2024, India’s installed generation capacity is 454 GW (Thermal-243 GW, Renewable-203 GW, Nuclear-8 GW). The share of non-fossil-based capacity is expected to increase to ~70% in 2031-32 from ~45% as of date. The average emissions are expected to reduce to 0.430 kg CO2/kWh in 2031-32, a ~50% reduction over the last decade.   Further, the country will have 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy by 2030. Hence, growth in the size of the economy will (and should) not come at the expense of the environment. However, this momentum towards cleaner sources of energy should be increased further, and everyone should contribute in their own capacity – corporates, individuals, academia, govt. (both state and central). The country has abundant renewable resources – wind, solar, hydro, etc. across its geographic expanse. Using Energy Efficient appliances & LED Lighting 2. Installing Rooftop Solar Systems 3. Unplugging devices when not in use 4. Avoid using a car for local and lone travel; instead use 2-wheeler (Normal recommendation would be Public transport but considering availability and time, I would prefer a 2-Wheeler) 5. Oil India Limited (OIL) has announced an e-tender (CQI4810P24) for the establishment of a 1 MW green hydrogen plant in Himachal Pradesh. Here are some key details regarding the tender: 1. **Description of Work:** The tender is for setting up a plant with a 1 MW capacity in Himachal Pradesh for the commercial production of High Purity (99.999%) Green Hydrogen. 2. **Bid Closing Date Extension:** The bid closing date has been extended from 10.04.2024 to 08.05.2024, with the EMD submission date also extended till 08.05.2024. 3. **Project Capacity:** The project aims to have a generation capacity of 17 Kg/hr of green hydrogen. 4. **Commissioning Deadline:** The project must be commissioned within 18 months of receiving the award letter. 5. **Earnest Money Deposit:** Bidders are required to submit an earnest money deposit of 13.5 million (~$162,369) along with their bids. 6. **Performance Security:** Selected bidders will need to furnish 10% of the contract value as performance security. 7. **Operational Requirement:** The unit must be designed to operate for at least 8,000 hours per year at 100% capacity. 8. **Bidders' Eligibility:** Bidders should be either manufacturers or channel partners of manufacturers of water electrolyzer technologies like anion exchange membrane, proton exchange membrane, alkaline membrane solid electrolyzer, or solid oxide electrolyzer. 9. **Experience Requirement:** Bidders must have supplied at least one unit of an electrolyzer based on water electrolysis technology in India within the last ten years, operating for a minimum of three months before the bid closing date. 10. **Joint Undertaking:** Bidders should have a deed of joint undertaking with an Indian or foreign manufacturer or channel partner meeting the technical criteria to supply electrolyzers, valid for at least five years from the original bid closing date. 11. **Local Content:** Bidders must be incorporated in India and maintain 20% or more local content for the offered services to be eligible to bid. 12. **Financial Requirement:** Bidders are expected to have an annual turnover of 83 million (~$998,274) during any of the last three financial years. The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme for offshore wind energy projects with a total outlay of USD 894 million (INR 7453 crore). This landmark move aims to establish India's first offshore wind energy projects.🌊💨 The VGF scheme is a major step towards implementing the National Offshore Wind Energy Policy, which was notified in 2015. The policy aims to exploit the vast offshore wind energy potential within India's exclusive economic zone. The government's VGF support will reduce the cost of power from offshore wind projects and make them viable for DISCOMs to purchase.
