Self-disclosure in therapy A micro skill yet a sensitive topic amongst many therapists. While most books teach us the theoretical understanding of these skills, none really help to understand their practical implications. As a savior, Sir Irvin Yalom, in his book called "The Gift of Therapy," spoke about his experiences, both negative and positive, when it comes to self-disclosure. Considering my experience with clients and shared learning so far, I deeply relate to Sir Yalom; striking the right kind of balance in self-disclosure is always a tricky part. I believe that the right kind of balance comes with receptivity and openness from both the client and the therapist. It is when we wish to utilize their knowledge about the therapist’s life as a growth criterion. As a therapist, how do you work with self-disclosure?

The field of psychology is one of immense importance, with professionals dedicated to understanding and improving mental health. However, the continuous changes in guidelines by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) have created a cloud of confusion and uncertainty for many aspiring psychologists. The frequent updates and modifications to the curriculum, certification processes, and practice standards make it challenging for students to chart a clear path forward. “Aaj kuch aur hai, kal kuch aur hoga.” The constant flux of guidelines leaves students feeling like they are always behind, trying to catch up with the latest requirements. Sudden change in name from M.Psy to MA. Clinical psychology; new additions like various entry and exit points in the course, etc. This not only affects their academic performance but also their mental health, leading to anxiety and frustration. “Clarity ka itna shortage kyun hai?” Clear and consistent guidelines are essential for effective learning and professional development. Without them, students and educators are left in a state of perpetual confusion, which can ultimately impact the quality of mental health services in the future. The guidelines mandating a science background for students of psychology are causing havoc among current as well as prospective psychologists in the nation. Largely ignoring the existence of psychology as a social science discipline, the guidelines also failed to comment on the fate of the already established or training psychologists hailing from humanities backgrounds, which creates a state of “Hamara kya hoga?” among them as well as the students. A state of uncertainty arises, questioning their decision to choose psychology as a field and waking up every day to a new guideline. It’s time for the RCI to recognize the impact of these continuous changes and prioritize clear, stable guidelines that support the academic and professional growth of psychology students. ➡️ The current discussions and seeking clarity regarding centralising licensing for all psychologists. ➡️ Why is it important? Here's a real life instance from my practice as a counseling psychologist and a special educator to make people more aware of the 'why. ' ➡️ A few weeks back, a woman in her 30s with a background in psychology and having worked as a surgical nurse in a renowned mental health hospital reached out to me to seek therapy for her mental health concerns. On having gotten onto a 15 minutes discovery call to help her clear her doubts, which inevitably went on for a longer as the woman was in immediate distress. Here's what the woman concluded the call with.. The woman after sharing her concerns and having her doubts cleared asked me if I have cleared my NET exam. After clearing that the NET exam is needed to pursue academics and for PhD entrances, I shared that Masters in Psychology and a considerable amount of practice and supervision makes it eligible for psychologists to practice as counseling psychologist. The woman was still persistent in the end saying she 'thought I had cleared my NET,' and that to share with her if I was doing another one of my mental health based art workshops. ➡️ This instance only shows the amount of false and incorrect information people still hold for psychologists and our authenticity. ➡️ The laypeople will not always be aware of the different pathways a psychologist goes through to practice actively in the mental health field. ➡️ Yet, what would be much more helpful and needed is when one single authentic information is known by all, and that is having a valid centralised license for all psychologists. My two cents regarding the new update by the Rehabilitation Council Of India for the notification of the new B.Sc Clinical Psychology (Hons.) Program: 1. 𝐀 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐈𝐭 𝐈𝐬, 𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬: Firstly, I cannot deny that it is good to see #RCI monitoring the education & training of #mentalhealth professionals in #India. High time we need an authorised body to 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐝 '𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞-𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬', '𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥-𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐬'; 𝐚𝐧𝐝 '𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬', open school grads (sad, but true) polluting the very scientific & skilled field of mental health, in a country where the gap between individuals requiring care & the actual number of trained professionals is gloriously high. 2. 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐬: I appreciate this standardisation of registering and recognition of candidates who have pursued a 4 year Regular Program of Psychology (the title and eligibility is a definite matter of further discussion though). This would ensure individuals in the field only pursue regular programs, provided all colleges provide a good proportion of Practical Exposure & Theoretical Training. 3. 𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞'𝐬 𝐓𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐯/𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: A prominent point where this notification is becoming ambiguous is the very title of the course, i.e., 𝐁.𝐒𝐜 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝/𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 "𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬". This adds to a lot of confusion regarding the two sub-disciplines under the field of mental health. Counseling Psychology & Clinical Psychology are two disciplines that, while coming under the umbrella of Psychology, require different elective, specialisations and practical training. The clientele they would deal with would itself be different: Where the former would largely deal with Mild-Moderate Cases (Counseling), the latter would mostly work with Moderate-Severe Concerns (Clinical), save for being fluid enough. 4. 𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚: The new eligibility criteria states an essential qualification of '10+2 with Science/Equivalent', again leaving a lot of room for confusion. Psychology has always been an amalgamation of Science and Art. This new eligibility does not make a lot of sense, especially considering so many students take up Psychology via the route of Humanities. A rigidity like this might discourage new professionals. 5. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐓𝐨 𝐔𝐬?: A looming question arises for a large body of ethical and existing practitioners, who have never been recognised for pursuing their Bachelors Programs in Psychology before 2024, or for those who have not entered the stream via the conventional routes (Direct Masters). To sum up, it is indeed a welcoming change, but a change that definitely requires critical amendments.

Guidelines for B.SC Clinical Psychology Program by RCI. Here is the final bomb that RCI have dropped on the entire fraternity of Clinical Psychology. And now removed this from the website. Are they confused or what ? The Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) has introduced a B.Sc. Clinical Psychology (Hons.) program, starting from the 2024-25 academic session. The course is aimed at training frontline mental health workers for basic interventions and mental health promotion. Key Points: - **4-year, full-time program**: Includes clinical placements in varied settings such as schools, community centers, and clinical institutions. - **Graduates will work as “Clinical Assistants (Clinical Psychology)”**: They will support Master-level Clinical Psychologists under supervision, offering basic psychological services. - **No midway entry or exit**: The course structure is designed to provide comprehensive training. - **Eligibility**: Open to students with a 12th-grade science background, selected through an entrance exam. Though this program will create a new category of mental health professionals, many in the community see this shift as a **downgrade**, especially with the **abolishment of the M.Phil. in Clinical Psychology**. The implications of this change remain a point of debate within the field. ### Personal Highlights: One of the major concerns I foresee is the inclusion of **both Clinical Psychology (CP) and non-CP faculty** in the course. The differences in approach and philosophy could lead to significant challenges. In my experience, even within CP faculty, there are internal politics and differing opinions, which can be difficult to navigate. Adding non-CP perspectives to the mix may amplify these challenges. Additionally, it's essential to highlight that these graduates will be **assistants to Clinical Psychologists**. Their roles will be limited to basic assessments and psychoeducation, and they will not be involved in deeper clinical work.
