  • Application of Queuing Theory in increasing efficiency in hypermarkets using WSN in shopping carts

I was keen on applying the concepts I learnt in Design of Experiments (DOE) and Testing of Hypothesis to real-life situations. To address the issue of long waiting times and overcrowding in hypermarkets, I worked in a team of four on an automated billing system that employs a smart shopping cart fitted with Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and a bar-code band. Consequently, customers only had to wait to surrender the bar-code band.

    • Modelled a smart shopping cart fitted with barcode scanners for self-checkout in Indian hypermarkets
    • Created a database comprising of number of footfalls and waiting times in the hypermarket
    • Applied Queuing Theory to theoretically calculate the waiting times for customers in a First-In First-Out system
    • Observed a drastic fall in waiting times of customers by 33% by implementing WSN in smart shopping carts

Fibre reinforced polymer laminates are used increasingly as structural parts in automobile, aircraft and navel industries due to their excellent mechanical characteristics for relatively low density when compared to the conventional materials and therefore much information on mechanical properties are necessary.
Composite materials behaviour subjected to fatigue load is very complex due to its non homogenous and anisotropic properties. So it is very important to understand the fatigue behaviour of FRP laminates to extend its usage for various applications in the current industries.
The modification of the driving system of the fatigue rig is aimed to reduce unnecessary vibrations by providing superior selection of materials for fabrications and by providing necessary damping to the entire fabricated apparatus.
The current set-up is being used by researchers to conduct research work in the field of composite materials.

    -

PRICINGANALYTICS uses historical housing data with factors such as location, build year, area, # of floors and rooms, garage and fireplace facilities to estimate the housing prices and indicate powerful factors influencing them.

    • Worked with large datasets on SAS and built regression models by using 15 explanatory variables
    • Conducted statistical tests to measure the significance of each factor and eliminate multicollinearity

Introduction: Developed a futuristic model of a traffic flow system. Instead of using fixed traffic lights, this system proposes a decision of traffic light which is dynamic in nature. Every vehicle is sensed from where is it coming from and where it wants to go. This data is analyzed and based on the existing vehicles in the intersection and then a decision is given to move forward.

The optimization of single traffic junction could be taken further to employ on a city traffic system to give global optimization of entire city traffic. This will give savings on time, fuel and additionally will increase the capacity of traffic a city can handle without traffic snarls.

Diving into the future, with the advent of self-driving cars, the traffic signals can be made more interactive with individual intelligent vehicles which will allow the duration time of the traffic lights to be random and excessively short compared to today’s average wait time at single traffic light.
    Key Pointers:

    • Optimized a traffic system outside Purdue Memorial Union, West Lafayette by simulation
    • Designed Experiments and incorporated Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) for traffic management based on traffic data during different times of the day
    • Performed trials of ITS and self-driving cars on Arena before directly implementing them into a real-world scenario
    • Simulation resulted in reduced traffic wait times by 23% and an increase in traffic capacity by 31%
