Getting nuances of businesses, does it need CFO spending more time with other functions? The onus is on Business CFO to be conversant with the business nuances, going deep dive . The caveat for CFO , is not to over indulge. Therefore, Horses for Courses. 2) Ammunitions ? Business CFO cannot be bookish, but be academically strong. LTCG on sale of immovable property - has the finance minister given option to calculate capital gain with indexation? Not really. LTCG for properties bought before 23 July 2024 will contine to be calculated without indexation. But at tax calculation stage, excess of tax calculated @ 12.5% over tax @20% with indexation will be ignored. So for all other purposes like roll over by investing in new property LTCG will be calculated without indexation. In cases where LTCG is loss after indexation, no benefit will be available of such loss. In India all the listed companies irrespective of their networth and unlisted companies (having NW of 250 crores or more) apply Ind AS for their accounting and reporting. The same rule applies to NBFCs also. While the Banking Industry marks a sizable contribution to Indian GDP, still they are following old AS for their accounting and reporting due to the stringent loss provisioning model in Ind AS. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das, on July 11, said the framework on the Expected Credit Loss (ECL) is expected to be out in the current financial year. This will help in curtailing the headwinds in the Ind AS implementation of Banks and hopefully Banks will see the Ind AS ledgers from FY 2025-26.

Last week the Bombay Shaving Company put out a full-page advertisement in national newspapers ostensibly in support of Prachi Nigam. Prachi had made the headlines having topped the UP State Board class 10 exams scoring 98.5%. The ad read, “Dear Prachi, They are trolling your hair today, they’ll applaud your A.I.R. tomorrow.” It added: “We hope you never get bullied into using our razor." While sounding sympathetic it was a not-so-subtle plug for the Bombay Shaving Company’s razors. Clearly an opportunistic attempt to jump the troll bandwagon. Using #MomentMarketing has become quite a trend now. It helps a brand connect with customers, boost awareness and is a low cast way to jump visibility. Brands often fall for the temptation to comment on something topical, make their take go viral, and driving their brand message and recall. This Bombae by Bombay Shaving Company campaign was not only insensitive and in bad taste it also spoke poorly of the company’s ill-timed opportunism and desperation to latch on to a students’ predicament. A chap marketing ploy. If you must do moment marketing here are some basics: 1. Comment on a topic or a trend if your brand has a relevant point of view and the topic itself is relevant to your category and audience. Stay authentic. Get the timing right. 2. Don’t get snide or snarky and never capitalize of any person or groups discomfiture. Be sensitive. 3. Avoid sensitive topics that can flair up and topics that have political/ religious/ geopolitical overtones. 4. Ensure that your moment marketing efforts comply with legal and ethical standards. 5. Regulatory bodies like The Advertising Standards Council of India must take note of such misdemeanours and pull up brand custodians with structures. Naming and shaming an offender are only fair under the circumstances. Also get the brand compensate the victim. July 31st the due date for individual income tax returns for FY 2023-24 (AY 2024-25) in India is approaching fast. Whether you are filing on your own or through a tax consultant, some friendly advice: 1. Don't wait till the last day to file as paucity of time can lead to errors / confusion coupled with slowness of tax portal. 2. Before filing, keep all key documents ready such as Form 16, Shares / MF Statments from Bank / Broker, Other Income Documents etc. 3. In addition to Form 26 AS Annual Tax Statement (ATS), Annual Information Statement (AIS) is also available on TRACES which gives a much detailed view of transactions reported to Income Tax from various sources. Particularly look out for Capital Gains transactions (Shares, MF etc.) which may not be in ATS as Tax applies but no obligation on Payer to do TDS. AIS corrections can be reported online by portal seems to have some technical issue since it's new functionality. 4. Cross check information in AIS with available sources. E.g. Shares, MF tax Statements from Bank vs reported in AIS. 5. Whether you are filing online (ClearTax or other sources) or through Consultants insist on a single folder with all backup documents including Tax Computation. This becomes basis for future assessment. 6. Lots of reporting sections whether TCS, Foreign travel reporting, Property Purchase TDS, Details of Asset & Liabilities need to be carefully filled. 7. Avoid petty tax evasion practices as Tax department has become much smarter & advanced with use of Technology. Remember, there is a difference between Tax Planning & Evasion. Pay differential taxes (if any), file return & remember to E-verify. 8. Even if you have missed Tax Planning for the year, remember there is always next year to do better. Well, practicing what I preach. I did my filings & wishing you the best for yours. Let's contribute in nation building.
