The Mantra to Personal Mastery Recently at an IIM Udaipur conducted Management Development Program for Indus Towers managers, I anchored four sessions. We started with the overarching perspective of Leadership and personal mastery before drilling down to specifics of Power & influence in teams, Managing high performance teams and the Feedback & Delegation aspects in Team Dynamics. We ensured a surfeit of activities, Role Plays and Case Studies to deepen the learning through practice and Ideation. In one of the sessions, we were discussion the aspects of ‘Honouring one’s word’ and ‘Being Authentic’ as performance accelerators of a team. Several participants mentioned their reservations about this, as under: “If we become authentic and honour our word and others in the team do not do it, we would be taken advantage of and would be forced to do the work of others” “All this is good theory but just does not work in real life. The fact is the Management has perceptions of who are good versus who are bad and irrespective of whether we honour our word or not, the favoured ones would get rewarded in terms of promotions and bonus” In life, we are conditioned to judge others on moral and ethical yardsticks but remain quick to rationalize our own failings against the same yardsticks. We look around to try and determine who all are ‘honouring their word’ and tell ourselves that we would wait for others to honour and keep their word before we keep our own. As Chris Argyris had said about self-deception, ‘Put simply, people consistently act inconsistently, unaware of the contradiction between the way they think they are acting and the way they really act.’  To gain the ability to honour our own word. We should be prepared to deeply deliberate and answer the question, ‘Where is my word when it comes time for me to keep my own word?’  In the ultimate analysis, there is a simple equation of workability which is YOU are equal to YOUR WORD. As I explained to the participants, team performance has very little to do with peering over shoulders to ascertain who is doing what. It has almost everything to do with how we can create trust of others in us. And creating trust has everything to do about Integrity viz. honouring our word and being authentic about how we show up for others. While some may try and take advantage of your trust in the short term, the aura of trust leads to team members gravitating towards you, working with you as you shift into being a natural leader. By shifting focus from mere employment to employability, they are addressing the evolving needs of the job market and ensuring that graduates are not only job-ready but also adaptable to long-term career challenges. This proactive strategy enhances students' skills and prepares them for sustainable success in a dynamic corporate landscape. It's a commendable move that other institutions might look to as a model for integrating holistic career preparedness into their curricula.

Are women expected to be more nurturing? Over the last 20 years, I have engaged with both male and female leaders through my coaching and facilitation work. My observations and research led to my book Powerful and Powerfulife which is about Feminine archetypes which impact leadership styles. Many men have also taken the Powerfulife Assessment to understand their leadership styles. In organizational scholarship, the infusion of spirituality into corporate culture has emerged as a transformative force that significantly influences employee well-being, work engagement, and operational efficiency, ushering in a new era of workplace harmony. However, amidst this evolution, the Indian banking industry remains relatively unchartered. This study embarks on a pioneering journey, exploring the intricate interplay between workplace spirituality and spiritual fulfillment within this dynamic sector and discerning differences between public and private sector employees. It is great to see our research with Climate Change Coaches (B-Corp) on 'Holding back climate progress - sustainability's critical skills gap' featured in #India #HR community press BW People.in. (See the report link in the comment below). There is much to share in understanding skills priorities for education, industry and policy-making. I have been fortunate to have started such discussions with esteemed scholars from India - Divya Singhal, Sreerupa Sengupta of Goa Institute of Management (GIM) and Dr. Nimmi P Mohandas of Amrita School of Business - Coimbatore. Sharing global perspectives on skills needs and initiatives ensures students are better prepared for the workforce. I have learned much about the projects offered in these two very different states in Southern India that are at the forefront of #climatechange impacts. This includes a focus on #inclusive skilling from our discussions, ensuring that diverse and marginalised communities have equal access to education and training as part of a #fair and #just #greentransition. This extends to diverse #neurodivergent and #LGBTQ+ projects in enabling #equity, #inclusion and #belonging in #greentalent. Cultivating #SoftSkills such as communication, engagement and influence are essential in a contemporary workforce, which is a call to action for educational providers and industry to look beyond technical expertise and develop integrated approaches to #talent development. Coming from a family of academicians, I have always been curious to learn and know more.  Recently, I had the chance to sit with Mr. Janat Shah, the founding director, professor of Operations Management at IIM Udaipur and the author of the book “supply-chain #management” which all the MBA folks would be aware of.   We talked about a variety of important topics and discussed his journey in the academia industry.   His advice to #young professionals, educators and educationists is worth adhering, and his views on India having the potential to become a management hub and impact of #technology and global mindset over Indian sectors as well as why IIM-Ahmedabad and Harvard are not CEO- generating institutions, make this discussion a must-watch for all!  #leadership #leadershipinterview #youtube #series
