The edtech industry is facing a challenging time, marked by waning investor interest and reduced demand for online learning in the aftermath of the pandemic. Amid this, Alakh Pandey-led edtech unicorn PhysicsWallah (PW) has bagged $210 million in a Series B funding round led by investment firm Hornbill Capital, with a sizable participation from venture capital firm Lightspeed Venture Partners.   Scaling operations:  With the latest funding round, PW’s post-money valuation has soared to $2.8 billion, making it the third-most valued edtech firm, trailing only Unacademy ($3.4 billion) and Eruditus ($3.2 billion), based on their last valuations. PW will use the funds for market consolidation, with the potential for “one large deal” in the next 12 months, according to Co-founder Prateek Maheshwari. PW, which initially focused on test-prep, has rapidly diversified its educational offerings to encompass everything, from school education to skills training. Anurag Behar’s article underscores a critical issue: the unrealistic performance demands placed on Indian NGOs. I completely agree with his view that NGOs need to focus on deep, sustainable solutions rather than short-term, project-based outcomes. Simply working on a cause for 1-2 years or in a specific geography often only scratches the surface of the problem. We need solutions that address issues on a larger scale without compromising on quality. Prioritizing numbers over depth will not lead to meaningful, long-term impact.

Unpredictable Elections & the EdTech Rollercoaster: What do they tell us about Indian Innovation Adoption? 🤔🤨 The recent General Election results and the EdTech boom-and-bust cycle offer fascinating insights into how Indian audiences embrace new ideas. Both trends began with a surge of enthusiasm. Voters craved change that the current Government promised and to some extent delivered, and Parents craved changes in the quality of education which the EdTech promised with a revolution in education. Unforeseen events played a part. The pandemic fuelled EdTech, while complex political dynamics led to the adoption of the current government way back when. It was a matter of one-sided choice. “If not THIS, then WHAT? If not HIM then “WHO?” However, excitement and hype doesn’t always translate to long-term success. EdTech faced profitability challenges based on their own failure to deliver catering to their promises, while the major party faced a silent backlash for their over-aggression. The Indian public is discerning. They'll experiment with new ideas, but if those ideas don't deliver on their promises, they'll move on quickly. This is evident in both election swings and EdTech user churn. Also, obnoxious claims do not sit well with the Indian people, The current Government’s “Abki Baar 400 paar” was the EdTech equivalent of “$50 Billion IPO of an Edtech Company which was running in losses”. The Takeaway, Indians are open to innovation, but they value substance over hype. Sustainable success hinges on solutions that address genuine needs and build trust. This is where Online Schools will play a major role in changing the perception towards EdTech. The responsibility of revolutionizing Education through tech and innovation now lies with Online Schools and we at Cyboard School take this responsibility as a core mission by revolutionising mainstream schooling rather than wasting our childrens’ precious childhood in Tuitions and Supplementary Classes. As per the government and election results, I am no political analyst but can only hope that the people’s mandate is taken as a feedback and improvements are made dropping the aggression aside.
