India (and probably China) are the only markets in the world with the scale for a hospitality major to announce a 150 hotel launch for a single brand. It's remarkable to see Hilton launch their relatively new Spark brand in India with a licensing agreement with Indian real estate major Embassy Group for 150 hotels. India is the world's most populous country, fifth largest economy and one of the world's fastest growing domestic tourism markets. Spark by Hilton is meant to be a "premium economy brand aimed at the aspirational and value-seeking traveler." On average, these hotels will be priced in India at ₹4,000 to 6,000 (USD 50-70) per key, depending on the market. It strikes me as being similar to the ibis, ibis Styles, ibis budget brand proposition and can capture the segment the same way Ibis did in Europe. For many, Spark may be their first hotel experience and if the Hilton Honors loyalty programme can capture their loyalty early on, then it's a big win. Interesting insights from Kahraman Yigit of Embassy Group: “We are seeing a huge demand in the country for premium economy accommodation and reliable quality stay experiences. This gap is currently unmet. With no other product quite like it in the premium economy segment, Spark by Hilton is a much-needed, consistent brand that will provide an impetus for the overall market to grow. We believe that this disruptive offering is the right one for investors, developers, and owners looking to maximize their returns.”

With the strong revival of weddings and high-profile events such as the G20 summit and the ICC Men’s World Cup, 2023 proved to be exceptional for hoteliers. The year also marked a record number of brand signings. “The growth was not just quantitative but strategic, with a keen focus on expanding into smaller cities and underserved markets,” states the HVS ANAROCK India hospitality industry overview 2023, released in April 2024. It states that tier-3 and tier-4 cities, which offer more attractive investment opportunities with lower entry barriers and operational costs accounted for 52 percent of the total signings by property in 2023.

One such exceptional opportunity came with SANTANI resorts. I was privileged to become involved in a 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 aimed at elevating SANTANI from a wellness resort company with 3 properties to the realization of a dream: becoming an iconic sustainability brand. Instead of relying on traditional, logic-based strategy development, we delved into the entrepreneurial passion of Vickum Nawagamuwage and his core @team. Utilizing our 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹, we sought to bring clarity to a five-year journey and establish a clear path forward. Through sessions filled with the dynamic interplay of left and right-brain thinking, the team has crafted an inspiring long-term vision paired with a practical 18-month action plan to take crucial steps forward. Our 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 builds upon the concept of "𝗗𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻," as outlined by Scott D. Anthony in his book. Dual Transformation involves two parallel strategies: Transformation A focuses on r𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆’𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 to make it more resilient and competitive, while Transformation B involves creating a new growth engine by 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀. This dual approach allows companies to sustain their current operations while simultaneously experimenting with innovative ideas and business models. Folks in the Hospitality /Hotels segment . I have a question . May sound painful to some , but let's have the Jury out . Q. Does India at this point of their journey really need global hotel brands , who actually don't invest in building and operating the hotel property ground up ? I am ok if they acquire existing assets , specially distressed My reasoning 1. Distribution & marketing is internet driven . Be it overseas plaforms or Indian OTA , aggregators , Hotel hosting tech plaforms 2. Indian technology is far ahead of any existing global hotel brand . If not there is always the SAS /cloud horizon , with Block chain not far behind 3. Hotel global loyalty programmes will soon reach their sell by date . They will move like alliances in the airline business , including the code sharing variety 4. The Lalit , Oberoi , Taj , Leela are brands who don't need Hilton , Accor etc . And neither do individual propriety assets owned by local funding . Enough Indian chains to provide knowledge , management and SOP So why is India sending this royalty overseas . Can re- invest in tech and other training process ? Case in point is the evolution seen in global business travel brands of the 1990 : What do CWT , BCD. etc bring to the table which Indian companies can't ? Currently. Not in the past . Considering many may have their tech plaforms build by TCS , Wipro etc . And global accounts procurement by global companies is a farce now The nation wants to know . Let's debate ... At the 54th FHRAI Annual Convention, Mr. Pradeep Shetty, President of the Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI), projected a bold future for the hospitality sector. By 2030, the industry is set to contribute $250 billion to India’s GDP and support 137 million jobs. By 2047, this could grow to an astounding $3 trillion. 🌟 Key Takeaways from Mr. Shetty’s Address: 💡 Call for Long-term Financing & Reforms To reach these ambitious goals, Mr. Shetty urged the government to introduce long-term financing options and regulatory reforms, such as streamlined licensing and single-window systems. 🏆 Outperforming Other Industries The hospitality sector already contributes 12-13% to GDP and employs over 12% of the workforce, outperforming even the automobile and IT sectors in terms of economic impact. 🏨 Expansion Plans The industry is set to add 50,000-60,000 hotel rooms in the next five years, creating more jobs and fueling further growth. 📑 Ease of Doing Business Report FHRAI has submitted a report to the government, addressing key challenges such as simplifying regulatory compliance, reducing licensing hurdles, and lowering high GST rates. 🌍 Centre of Excellence Launched FHRAI also launched a Centre of Excellence to drive research and innovation, aiming to shape the future of hospitality in India. 📉 GST Rates a Barrier Mr. Shetty called for a reduction in GST rates, which currently stand at 12-18%, much higher than in competing Southeast Asian markets. Marriott International’s recent announcement to launch a dozen branded residence projects, including the world’s biggest Westin Residences in Gurugram, highlights a significant trend.
