Sharing an interesting story from around the time when e-commerce started becoming a thing in India. Snapdeal at that time was a couponing business (similar to Groupon). We were selling restaurant, spas, travel coupons and even date with a celebrity as lightning deals on the platform. The sourcing team then started bringing in products like bean bags, perfumes and watches to be sold on the platform. From a technical perspective, we kept the data model as same and fit these products to be sold as deals on the platform. Everything was selling like hot cakes. One fine day, the sourcing team came up with a men's shirt to be sold. But there was one problem. "The shirt came with multiple size options." What started with a small data modelling problem fitting multiple sizes into a deal became a multiple day discussion of whether we need a rewrite the platform into a full fledged e-commerce. Seeing the traction on product deals, the answer was a definitive yes. Once we got the nod, began a marathon of sleepless nights and relentless brainstorming sessions, as a tight-knit team of 6-7 engineers poured their hearts and souls into making our vision a reality. Despite the inevitable challenges and hurdles along the way, we persevered, and against all odds, we succeeded. Now, thirteen years later, as I look back on my career journey, I can't help but smile at the memory of those exhilarating days. Building that e-commerce platform from the ground up remains not just a highlight, but a testament to the power of teamwork, innovation, and unwavering determination. 🚨Swiggy IPO gets oversubscribed led by QIB bids Swiggy’s IPO was oversubscribed 1.07 times by the third day, driven largely by QIBs, who oversubscribed their portion 1.52 times. Retail investors subscribed to 97% of their portion, while Non-Institutional Investors (NIIs) made bids for 22% of their allocation. Swiggy's employee quota also saw strong demand, with a subscription rate of 1.38 times. Bengaluru-based AppsForBharat, which runs spiritual tech platform Sri Mandir, has secured $18 Mn (around INR 151.1 Cr) in a Series B funding round led by Nandan Nilekani’s VC fund Fundamentum 👇 AppsForBharat plans to use the fresh funds to scale up operations of its Sri Mandir app, onboard new temples, launch additional services and build a comprehensive tech stack for devotional ecosystem. Prior to this, the spiritual tech startup raised $14 Mn in total funding, with $10 Mn and $4 Mn in Series A and seed funding rounds, respectively. Buying gold / silver coins on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Trithiya come under low frequency - low complexity purchase category. It is a seasonal product bought generally during specific occasions. Zepto Blinkit Swiggy lapped up this opportunity and started selling this with the benefit of quick delivery. No wonder the sales picked up quite well. I wonder how much would it have impacted the sales of larger eComm players. Sales trends from swiggy is already out. 🌟 Amidst all the excitement around Unicommerce IPO, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible journey that led to this moment. What truly amazes me is that in all the posts and articles, little mention has been made of the original founders—Ankit Pruthi, Karun Singla and Vibhu Garg—three friends from IIT Delhi who started the company from a basement office. Within first three months, they secured their first paying customer, and in just a year, Unicommerce was already the go-to solution for major e-commerce players like Jabong, Myntra, Lenskart.com, Snapdeal | AceVector Group and even international giants like Lazada (South East Asia) and Daraz (Pakistan). When the Indian e-commerce landscape shifted from an inventory-led model to a marketplace model, Unicommerce didn’t just adapt—it thrived, bringing a huge number of sellers onto its multi-channel platform in record time. This success was not just a stroke of luck; it was a testament to the founders' vision and the incredible team they built around them. Their dedication to creating an extensible, scalable product allowed for seamless customer onboarding, sometimes in just a matter of days. And of course the company was later acquired by Snapdeal. I feel incredibly fortunate to have been a part of this phenomenal growth journey.
