How difficult is it to create a category in the EdTech business? Extremely hard! ‘K-10 Skilling’ is the category we are creating through a highly scalable, self-learning digital platform. But what is K-10 Skilling? For ages, schools have bundled certain vital activities under the heading of ‘extra/co-curricular activities.’ In most cases these are ‘OPTIONAL’ for students to choose. This has masked the real meaning of skilling. If every educationist out there is saying that skills are more important than knowledge, then why are we not standardizing skill learning? The answer is ‘Lack of Standardised learning tools or PLATFORM’. We created this category and standardized skill learning in schools. Noida-based unicorn PW (PhysicsWallah) tops the edtech funding chart in 2024 with a $210 million round followed by Eruditus Executive Education and upGrad raising $150 million and $95 million, respectively. The Indian edtech funding landscape has seen a marked decline since its peak in 2021, when it raised a record $5.8 billion, fueled by pandemic-led digital adoption. Why is the EdTech industry being overlooked for sales roles ? Recently, I’ve noticed several job openings where recruiters explicitly mention they don’t want candidates from the EdTech industry. As a sales professional with experience in this sector, this trend has caught my attention. It's important to ask: What’s driving this perception? Is it a concern about industry-specific approaches, or perhaps a mismatch in expected sales tactics? While EdTech has its own unique challenges, it has also shaped us into adaptive, resilient professionals with strong communication and strategic planning skills. However, it seems that we might need to better align our experiences with the broader expectations of the market. I believe this is an opportunity for us to reflect and reposition ourselves in the job market. We should focus on: Highlighting transferable skills : like client relationship management, data-driven decision-making, and consultative selling. Demonstrating versatility : by showing how our experiences in EdTech can be valuable in other industries. Adapting our language : in resumes and interviews to resonate more with the broader sales community. It’s crucial to address these concerns head-on and prepare ourselves to bridge any perceived gaps.
