Just had a great conversation with Sandeep Saxena on (abysmal) #Customer #Focus, (lack of) #Innovation, and how the world seems to be chasing new, shiny ideas, even while basic issues are unaddressed. Take the case of one of the largest private banks in India, and among the most respected globally: HDFC Bank. As a Fastag user, the absolute minimum requirement from a 'digital-only' service is that the SMS message is sent within a few seconds after the fastag was charged at a toll booth (so you know if you were charged the right amount or not). Similarly, on recharging your Fastag wallet, is it too much to ask that users should also be informed of the updated balance in their wallets (so you know if you have enough to drive to the next checkpoint or not). Yet, despite significant investments in the underlying Technology, HDFC Bank #Fastag users get debit alerts hours after the charge event, and the emails that confirm wallet recharges do not show the updated balance! (Personally, after months of struggle, I finally took the decision to switch out to a different service provider for my Fastag needs.) Sadly, these issues are not just limited to any one bank, or one industry. There is enough material for an entire series on this topic. New Digital Economy and the Paradox of Productivity by Sadhan Kumar Chattopadhyay, Sreerupa Sengupta and Shruti Joshi^ This article estimates the contribution of digitalisation to productivity growth and examines the Solow Productivity paradox for India. The analysis indicates that the contribution of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to output growth increased from 5.0 per cent in 1981-1990 to 13.2 per cent during 1992-2023. Some 450 million Indians are not digitally savvy and many find apps and websites complex to use. They and even ‘digitally savvy’ Indians could use conversation platforms, an artificial intelligence technology that allows people to interact with computers in a way that mimics human conversation. The rapid #monopolisation, or rather #triopolisation of #UPI by a few dominant players has concentrated over 90% of transactions, limiting #competition and #innovation. While UPI holds great promise for driving #financialinclusion, its adoption remains heavily skewed towards urban areas, leaving #rural populations underserved due to #poor #digitalinfrastructure, #low literacy, and limited incentives.
