The #auto #pli scheme has seen middling success so far, with most successful applicant #oem s unable to register due to high entry barriers like networth, sales criteria. #olaelectric is the only OEM under 'non automotive investor' section to have got its products registered. In any case, not a single rupee of incentives has been disbursed till date under the #pli scheme, which has anyway been tweaked with new timelines. ***Hyundai Motor India IPO a success for its parent. What about local shareholders?*** The issue—a milestone for both the company’s parent Hyundai Motor Co. (HMC) and the Indian stock market as the country’s largest public offering so far—is a key part of Hyundai’s strategy to enhance the valuation of its global businesses as part of the South Korean government’s Corporate Value-Up Program. The programme seeks to improve operational efficiencies in large conglomerates like Hyundai, while enhancing corporate value and returning more cash to shareholders. In March this year, Hyundai Motor India paid a special dividend of ₹107.82 billion to Hyundai Motor Co. following strong earnings. This amounted to a dividend of ₹13,270 per equity share. Over the past three years, dividends have increased steadily, from ₹1,838 per share in FY22 to ₹5,727 per share in FY23. What the market says? 🔊 “It’s a significant moment for the Indian stock market, as we can absorb such a large issue. In 2007, Reliance Power was the biggest IPO with a size of ₹11,563 crore, and although it turned out to be a disaster, the market managed to absorb it. We are all witnessing the explosive growth phase of the Electric Vehicles (#EVs) industry in #India. Homegrown Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra have taken on the might of Japanese makers Maruti Suzuki, Toyota Motor Corporation and Honda head-on. As automakers raised two very important concerns regarding the country’s recent EV policies, it seems like govt is convinced and got some balanced solutions. Let’s hope for positive outcomes that encourage both EV adoptions and support for existing manufacturers

Changed the headline to say 'not just electric', but read the story for more details, I'll give some in the following post... CNG vehicles are accounting for a larger and larger share of new car sales for manufacturers such as Tata Motors Maruti Suzuki India Limited and Hyundai Motor India Ltd. In fact, as much as 40-45% of some models. CNG has been the space to watch rather than battery electric models whose sales seem to have stalled of late despite price reductions. And there are interesting innovations in the CNG automotive space too like Tata's new turbocharged CNG Revotron engine. The Indian Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry has said that CNG should account for 15% of India's energy needs by 2030 from just around 6-7% today. Yet with domestic production of natural Gas being diverted towards energy and fertiliser production, city gas distribution companies like IGL might be forced to hike prices due to using more imported LNG in their gas mix. This could see price increases of Rs 4-6 per kg. This coupled with crashing Lithium and other raw material prices and the PM e-DRIVE scheme building more charging infrastructure for EVs, will electric vehicles step up again? Particularly as 2025 will see the introduction of several new electric vehicle models. Can business model shifts spur EVs? Separate the battery from the body? The new MG Motor AE #EV in India, the Windsor (based on the Wuling Cloud EV) is interesting. https://lnkd.in/gH8in3PB It's not just the low price (for spec), but the Pay As You GO (PAYGO) model - where the upfront cost is kept low but you "rent" the battery @Rs 3.5/km. Add in electricity and it's probably above Rs 4/km - still cheaper than diesel by a bit and much cheaper than petrol cars of similar spec. But this model makes it much easier for low-km drivers to buy in to an EV since they don't pay the premium for an EV (high up-front capex meant to be recovered with lower operating costs). There are two possible risks here. (1) High usage drivers will end up paying more; (2) Low km drivers will probably cost the company. A more subtle question is how is this billed and enforced? Do you prepay? Do they bill periodically? If you don't pay, do they brick your car remotely? I am NOT a fan of aaS (as a service) models unless the end-user has a fair choice. (h/t Cory Doctorow). We should own the hardware we pay for and be free to use it fairly. Plus this seems like not just a security risk but a huge headache to get the software right. Seems like the dream system for hackers - cut the right wires (odometer wire alone?) and free driving??? I note another enticing draw for people wary of EVs - battery lifetime warranty for the first owner.
