The real problem is Food Safety and Standards Authority of India.....and then, the brands & manufacturers...!! Time to take strict action against FSSAI too...!! Should an audit not be done on Food Safety and Standards Authority of India....? Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has done a very mediocre job in really setting quality standards for Food products/brands in Bharat/India... whilst it is good that they are stepping up to check quality standards across categories, brands and manufacturers....but the Root Cause is a broken, directionless, spineless and obsolete Food Safety and Standards Authority of India....!! The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI India) has issued a directive to e-commerce food business operators, including platforms like Swiggy, Blinkit, and Zepto, to ensure that the food products they deliver have a minimum shelf life of 30% or 45 days before expiry. This came after a meeting where FSSAI urged these operators to adopt best practices to guarantee the freshness and safety of food items delivered to consumers. The goal of this initiative is to prevent the distribution of expired or near-expiry products, prioritizing consumer health and promoting responsible food handling practices. The meeting, chaired by FSSAI CEO, saw over 200 participants, both in-person and virtually. Additionally, FSSAI warned e-commerce FBOs against making misleading or unsupported claims about their products. Bad experience with food products purchased through Blinkit In the recent times, I've had several #quality issues with related to #food items ordered via Blinkit. The Amul milk packet delivered by them arrived at room temperature (not at all cold) Also, the 'use-by date' was of same day (the order time was around 9 PM)! The replacement pack also was temperature abused. After a lot of back & forth email conversations, as a customer I finally gave up. They could neither provide a proper replacement nor could they refund my money (I lost Rs. 32/- to Blinkit). The customer service executives were indeed helpless in this regards, only because of the fact that 'I could not take a picture of the curdled milk as a proof'. I really wonder, if these e-comm services are for the convenience of the people, or do they expect people to take pictures of curdled milk on a busy weekday morning!!?? Next bad experience was with #expired box of Anand motichoor laddo. This happened while I was leaving to meet my friend and I wanted to quickly buy a box of sweet for her. I hopped into my cab and saw the date, it had expired 15 days ago. So, I ended up meeting my friend empty-handed. I really wonder if Blinkit knows how unlawful it is to sell expired food items! I had time in cab to chat with the chatbot to find a resolution for this. However, there was no option wherein I could opt for a refund. Whatever different options I tried, all led me to replacement only. Since I was not going to be available for the entire week (where my delivery arrived), there was no way replacement was going to work for me, instead I wanted a refund. So this time I lost a good Rs. 210/- to Blinkit. All personal experiences aside, I want Food Safety and Standards Authority of India & the concerned authorities to look into this issue of selling #substandard & expired food products by Blinkit. Alternatively, I have registered a complaint on the Food Safety Connect portal by #FSSAI. Hopefully, necessary actions are taken by the concerned officials for preventing the sale / delivery of substandard and expired food items by the e-comm aggregators. #foodsafety #foodandbeverage #ecommerce P.S.: The food brands out there, need to be watchful of the platforms they select to list their products, lest it may affect your brand name in some way.

In response to a recent surge in several food delivery related issues and also in anticipation of the upcoming tourist peak season, the FSSAI has intensified monitoring of e-commerce and quick commerce platforms for food delivery compliances. In its 45th Central Advisory Committee meeting held recently, FSSAI officials were directed inter alia to implement strict measures to ensure heightened safety standards and surveillance of facilities used by these platforms. E-commerce and quick commerce platforms typically use ‘dark stores’ for storing FMCG inventories before delivering these to customers. In the CAC meeting, Shri G Kamala Vardhana Rao, CEO, FSSAI asked Food Commissioners of various states to step up surveillance on such warehouses and other facilities utilized by e-commerce platforms. He also asked for SOPs to be issued to such dark stores and associated delivery partners of these platforms. As part of the Eat Right India movement, several steps are being taken by the FSSAI and the Department of Consumer Affairs to promote and uplift healthier eating habits. 𝗢𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲: E-commerce is rapidly growing, with 15-20% of spices sold through platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and BigBasket. The convenience factor and rise of digital retail are major drivers behind this shift. Food regulator FSSAI Publication has asked food business operators to immediately remove claims of 100 per cent fruit juices in advertisements as well as labels on packaged products.
