The Ministry of Textiles in India has issued its first quality control orders (QCOs) for the technical textiles industry, covering 31 items: 19 geo textiles and 12 protective textiles. Announced by Rajeev Saxena, joint secretary, these regulations aim to enhance the standards and quality of these textiles to safeguard the environment, human health, and animal & plant life. Geo-textiles are used in infrastructure and environmental projects, while protective textiles shield individuals from hazardous conditions. The QCOs align Indian products with global standards, benefiting users and consumers. In 2021-22, India’s technical textile exports were valued at $2.85 billion, with expectations for accelerated growth. Future phases will introduce additional QCOs for agro and medical textiles. The new regulations, applicable to both domestic and foreign manufacturers, will take effect 180 days post-publication in the Official Gazette. Downstream synthetic textile manufacturers of India are urging the Government to lift Quality Control Orders (QCOs) on man-made fibres (MMF), claiming these orders hinder their ability to compete by limiting access to affordable and specialised raw materials. Industry representatives report that QCOs on polyester and viscose inputs have significantly slowed down production and strained financials. 🔸QCOs led to higher market prices for PSF and VSF in FY '24. 🔸BIS certification has been selective, affecting key exporters like China, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore. 🔸PSF and VSF imports dropped by 43% and 65%, respectively, increasing dependency on domestic sources. For a deep dive into the impact of QCOs on the textile industry, click here to read more👉🏻 https://lnkd.in/gMtdM_hy #ApparelResources #TextileIndustry #ManMadeFibres #QualityControl #PSF #VSF #BISCertification #SyntheticTextiles #DomesticDemand #TradeData #IndustryNews

Textile Industry Welcomes Relaxation of QCOs For Imported Polyester The textile industry has applauded the Indian government's decision to relax the mandatory Quality Control Order (QCO) for polyester fibre, filament yarn, and spun yarn imported under the Advance Authorisation Scheme, Export Oriented Units (EOUs), and Special Economic Zones (SEZs). The QCO, issued in April 2021 by the Ministry Of Chemicals & Fertilizers , had mandated that all users purchase these polyester products only from BIS-licensed #domestic and #international #manufacturers. While Indian companies obtained the #licenses, many foreign manufacturers' applications remained pending with the #BIS, hindering textile exporters relying on specified specialty fibres and yarns. In a press release Southern India Mills’ Association' welcomed the latest notification from June 6, 2024 relaxing the QCO norms for #polyester #imports under the Advance Authorisation Scheme. https://lnkd.in/gQfGWg2x SYNTHETIC AND RAYON TEXTILES EXPORT PROMOTION COUNCIL (SRTEPC)| CHEMEXCIL EPC | Chemical and Allied Products Export Promotion CouncilÊ(CAPEXIL)

Leather industry is adopting sustainable practices🍃 *Enzyme-based tanning and expanded effluent treatment, to cut pollution and reduce its environmental impact India’s leather industry, centered in Unnao and Kanpur, is seeing reduced production and rising costs due to environmental restrictions. Tannery workers like Mohammad Shakeel Ahmad describe facilities running at half capacity, with only 215 of the original 402 tanneries still operational. High-efficiency practices like Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems and enzyme-based liming are now in place, driven by community and regulatory pressures to reduce pollution. Despite these innovations, costs have surged, pushing some manufacturers to relocate operations to Kolkata and abroad. ➡ Reduced Operations: Due to environmental regulations, production at Unnao and Kanpur’s tanneries has been cut by half, with only 215 of 402 tanneries still active. ➡ Environmental Restrictions: Since 2017, pollution control boards required tanneries to reduce capacity, or face fines. This led to high operational costs, reducing the industry’s capacity to 25% of what it once was. Increased Costs: Treatment costs for tannery waste rose from Rs. 2 to Rs. 88 per hide, pushing tanneries to operate at limited capacity for financial viability. ➡ Eco-friendly Practices: Facilities are adopting sustainable technologies, like Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems, recycling 80% of water, and replacing sodium sulfide with enzymes, which are safer and less polluting. ➡ Relocation and Partnerships: Due to high costs and restrictions, some leather businesses have shifted operations to Kolkata and even formed partnerships in countries like Vietnam and Turkey. ➡ Challenges with Pollution Control: Effluent from tanneries continues to impact the Ganga River, with Jajmau’s tanneries adding to pollution due to outdated treatment plants. ➡ Infrastructure Needs: Experts recommend upgrading treatment plants, implementing chrome recovery, and improving cooperation between states to address environmental impacts comprehensively. #EcofriendlyLeather #LeatherIndustry #SustainblePractices #ZeroLiquidDischarge #EnzymeTanning #PollutionControl Image credits: Zoya Hussain-Mongabay
