Here’s the story: At Thriverse, we recently partnered with a traditional consumer brand that took a non-traditional approach with their celebrity campaign. Usually, signing a celebrity means spending big bucks and coordinating complex photo shoots or ad productions. And often, you run into issues like: 🚩The celebrity’s jam-packed schedule - Sometimes challenging to pin down a shoot date. 🚩High costs of production - Photo and video shoots are expensive. 🚩High cost of celebrity entourage - Hair and makeup fees aren't cheap! The brand would have to expend a lot of effort, time, and money to do this! Well, in most cases, brands do this all the time! But here's another approach - the 'Image Rights Deal'. Adar Poonawalla’s ₹1000 Crore Stake in Dharma Productions is a confusing move - and a pure glamour chasing one at best. In business, diversification can be a powerful strategy—when done with precision. However, not all investments align with long-term brand vision. Adar Poonawalla’s recent ₹1000 crore acquisition of a 50% stake in Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, can prove to be a wrong step as it risks the brand from multiple fronts. 1. Mismatch of Core Brand Values Serum Institute, is synonymous with public health, vaccines, and global humanitarian efforts. Dharma Productions, on the other hand, is a Bollywood production house rooted in entertainment, glamour, and (little bit of) storytelling. The two brands don’t just operate in different industries— but even consumers don’t even think about them in same breath. This merger dilutes the clarity of both brands, potentially confusing consumers. Why would a leader in vaccines need to have a presence in Bollywood with no clear upside. 2. Reputation Management Risks The entertainment industry is volatile, and Dharma, despite its legacy, is not immune to controversy or box-office failures. Aligning a reputable, science-driven brand like Serum Institute with the unpredictable dynamics of Bollywood could expose Poonawalla to unnecessary reputational risks. Bollywood scandals, creative controversies, or failed films can tarnish Adar’s image vs other way round. 3. Financial Overextension This is not a large amount of you see Serum’s cash flow but ₹1000 crore is no small investment, and while the entertainment industry is booming, especially with the growth of OTT platforms, this is still a high-risk market. Dharma Productions, while successful, has also faced its share of setbacks in recent years and it’s unclear if the synergies between these two very different industries will generate the great returns. 4. Brand Diversion Over Diversification Diversification should complement core competencies. In this case, Poonawalla’s strengths lie in life-saving technologies and healthcare. Venturing into entertainment could stretch resources, focus, and management bandwidth. Instead of building on the healthcare empire that has global significance, this move might be seen as chasing glamour at best.

Listen, I consult every single day. I am on calls with agencies, creators and brands everyday - non-stop, and the one thing I always tell both #brands & #creators is if you want to invest in one another (more so when creators want a sponsorship) that you need to dive into ~ ✨proof of concept ✨ ~. *SOME* creators have unrealistic expectations - they want $25K for 1 TikTok (their engagement is not $25K worthy), they have never posted organically about the brand, and they do not have enough respect on deadlines, refuse to do edits, and think the world revolves around them. My favorite is "I am the perfect fit for this beauty brand because I am a beauty creator". BUT *SOME* brands also are also guilty - not learning that you do not always need to activate with the BIGGEST name, you can experiement with different niches (ie: beauty campaign CAN use a food creator), and activating with the wrong talent that just makes 0 sense. On both sides, lots of work is to be done - however, *brands* learn and educate yourself / agencies on new platforms. *Creators* or even better *rude managers* educate yourself on how to be respectful to others, learn proof of concept, and see how to elevate your talent, correctly. This will make the world a better place, and grow those relationships 🌟 That's my TED Talk for the day.

Feel nhi aarhi Let's change this snare drum' 🗿Or if an HR tells Anuv Jain 'Too much emotions. Pls change.' (Yes! That's literally the entire whatsapp msg) How do you figure that relationship going ahead? 🗿Or if you tell MC Stan 'Stan! Iss line ka iss word ka ye consonant mumble ho rha hai'. What do you think will happen? This is why mediocre ad songs keep on happening. Because I'm sure after the 38th version it's already a corpse buried 200m below ground level and still somehow concrete being poured all over it. A song that'll forgotten in a week because then another campaign will be launched and then a famous dancer would come in and then SRK and then Putin and it goes on and on Even the company's employees don't listen to their own anthems, this poses a serious problem. If numbers are you metric, longevity will give you even more. A Brand Song can genuinely n organically reach millions of people and touch their hearts if artists were given the creative freedom to express how they truly want to.
