🚨 The Silent Crisis in Our Education System 🚨 Did you know that our education system has a hidden crisis, and it’s not just about failing grades? The real challenge lies in the DROPOUT ratio, which continues to rise ⬆ Here’s the harsh reality - Nobody can be failed till Grade 8 even though when they haven't reached the learning levels required for Grade 8. Imagine a 5th grader still at a 2nd-grade study level. Why? Because our classes aren’t engaging, our teaching methods need improvement and most importantly more than 1/3rd of teachers are unskilled. The ASER (Annual Status of Education Report) report provides insights on the learning levels of children in India. The report highlights the issue of high dropout rates, with a significant percentage of children not being able to read or do math by the end of grade 3. According to the report, almost 40% of children in rural areas and 25% in urban areas are unable to recognize basic numbers and perform simple arithmetic operations. This is a major concern, as it affects the child's future academic and career prospects. For many children, school feels like a chore, not a place of excitement and learning. This lack of engagement is why dropout rates are increasing. As mentioned in my previous post, Shikha Shiksha Sansthan is bridging this educational gap for underprivileged children and rural education. In partnership with several NGOs and government schools, SSS provides quality education to reduce dropout rates. In parallel to that, Cyboard School operates as a structured online school following the CBSE-mapped curriculum from Nursery to Grade 8. The Content of Artificial Intelligence and the Paradox of Big Tech ۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔ Tech giants like Google are among the biggest proponents of artificial intelligence (AI), yet ironically, they are also the most discouraging of its use. Their systems and algorithms often penalize content created with AI tools, despite their emphasis on adopting AI-powered solutions.  Understandably, everyone is currently focused on promoting AI, but they do not have a system to distinguish between useful and non-useful AI-based content. Although this is important, because there will come a time when everything will have to be generated by AI tools, will they be able to discourage it by putting everything in the AI ​​category? The only reason these companies have this behavior is because there are so many people currently creating content without using AI...! As for the concern that AI is flooding the Internet with irrelevant and unnecessary content, the solution is not to devalue all AI-generated content. Instead, systems should be in place to assess the quality of AI-powered content, just as we evaluate human-created content. Ironically, these same companies — Google, Meta, Microsoft, and others — are actively leveraging AI tools to extract and analyze content from across the Internet for their own benefit. Launching TopGrade.pk in 2018 was akin to riding a rollercoaster—thrilling starts, sharp turns, and unexpected dips. We kicked off with high hopes as 13,000 students signed up in our first year. But out of these, only 34 converted into paying customers, generating a mere PKR 195,000 in revenue, while our expenditures ran into millions. It was a stark, disheartening reality check. We invited our 34 paying students to share a meal and their thoughts on our platform. Their insights were not only invaluable but also invigorating. They appreciated our service and pointed out critical areas for improvement, fueling our resolve to not just succeed but to provide significant value. This feedback was a turning point. Inspired by principles from the books Nail It Then Scale It, Blue Ocean Strategy, The Lean Startup, and others, we learned the importance of mastering startup basics before scaling. Resources from Y Combinator and Karan Bajaj further honed our understanding of startup fundamentals. Armed with new knowledge and strategies, we embarked on a journey of simplification and optimization. We focused on user needs, refined our offerings, and slowly, the results began to show. By 2020, we saw a significant increase in student engagement, sales, and registrations. We built robust systems for tracking progress, from dashboards to performance indicators, and most importantly, we built a team as passionate about our vision as we were. From these efforts, TopGrade.pk has grown from a fledgling startup to a structured powerhouse in online education across Pakistan, complete with dedicated teams for finance, sales, academics, and marketing. The lesson we learned? Building a startup is not about immediate perfection but about relentless perseverance and continuous learning. It’s about adapting swiftly, embracing failures as stepping stones, and always pushing forward. What age, designation & experience have to do with learning? Do these things have an inverse relationship with willingness to learn? This question pops up in my mind every time when I meet this kind of audience. I wish if people at senior positions could believe that nobody can take away their right to be wrong despite of that designation and experience. To irr is human. Corporate leaders who take credit for anything that their team has achieved. Must also be taking ownership of what their team is not able to deliver. Accepting new ideas and leaving older ones is key to growth. Unlearning is important for new learning. Rejecting an idea on the face of it, without listening to it in full. Or rejecting anything just because you could not do it last time a few years back is not the right idea. Experience is a great teacher.
