There's no shortage of MF advocates. But this top executive prefers a rather unknown product over MFs! 😮 His choice: NPS Tier-2 funds, whose AUM is just 0.10% of that of MFs. Think of Tier-2 funds as similar to the traditional NPS Tier-1 funds but without any of the tax benefits. The only plus point is that it allows withdrawals anytime. So what's Sumit Shukla's master-plan! He will first invest in Tier-2 funds. He prefers NPS Tier-2 over MFs due to its low charges, and flexibility to switch between fund managers and asset classes tax-free. Remember, he also has the flexibility to withdraw as and when the need arises. When he nears 60 (retirement age), he will shift the Tier-2 funds to NPS Tier-1 funds and reap the tax benefits. In NPS unlike MFs, one can withdraw 60% of the corpus as SWP from 60 to 75 without paying any tax. If he can accumulate Rs.5 crore in his NPS account by 60, he can withdraw Rs.4 lakh every month till he turns 75. (Assuming 12% interest). All this without touching the principal amount. But this is not a full-proof plan ⏱ 1) Nobody knows how Tier-2 funds are supposed to be taxed when sold or when switching to Tier-1 funds. Every CA has its own opinion. 2) NPS has limited choice. Mutual Funds offer a much wider range. Also, NPS is restricted to investing in only the top 200 stocks. Microfinance institutions lend to low-income groups living in unbanked and underbanked areas typically at an interest rate of 21-25 percent. But some smaller players charging as high as 35-40 percent on their loans in certain parts of the country. Recently, RBI started cautioning NBFCs and MFIs over charging high interest rates on some loans. Additionally, RBI has been reaching out to some MFI lenders to gather details on the penalties charged and action taken against defaulters.
