“Bhaiya at the end to react native ka code bhi jvm bytecode m hi compile hota h na?” This was a response i got from a developer when asked about how react native works in Android. But reality could not be farther. See, Android DVM is not capabale of running javascript code because these are inherently different technologies. Instead, what happenes is that a JSC (JavascriptCore) runtime that is bundled into android application alongside react native libs which actually loads the javascript code into memory at runtime. And then, there is a React Native bridge native library (.so file) which acts as a intermediator, translating the calls from java/kotlin code and js code. And because of all these intermediary layers translating instructions among languages, the performance for react native is not as good as native applications. Hope it helps.

🤔 Message delivery semantics: How message delivery is guaranteed in Pub/Sub systems     In a Pub/Sub system, there are broadly 3 components(the rest are implementation of each systems such as Topic, Partitions, Exchange, Queue, etc):     1️⃣ Producer: Responsible for Producing messages that are to be consumed by clients.  2️⃣Broker: Responsible for holding message coming from the Producer.  3️⃣Consumer: Client applications that receive message in order to perform some business logic.     Since coordination of these systems are at mercy of distributed systems as well as application logic; due to which messages can be lost or duplicated.  Let's go into the 3 message delivery semantics: ❓1. At most once   This is the most basic delivery guarantee wherein messages are sent to consumer at most once.  ⚠️ The major disadvantage is that messages can be lost in between due to network, Message broker consumer issues. But the benefit is that messages will not be duplicated.     🔁 2. At least once   Here, message will be guaranteed to reach the consumer.  ⚠️But main issue is that message can be duplicated. If you have an `order_shipment` service, this could mean that orders can be sent twice!     🔂 3. Exactly Once   This is the ideal message delivery guarantee. Here the message is neither duplicated (at least once delivery issue) nor lost (at most delivery issue).   But as seen in Distributed systems, this is not easy to implement. This is classic case of "Two generals problem", where 2 generals need to coordinate sending messages across enemy lines.     💡 Solution:  Since it is a hard problem, very few Pub/Sub frameworks ensure "Exactly-Once" at the framework level. Also, they guarantee "Exactly-Once processing" and not "Exactly-Once delivery" 1️⃣ Kafka provides "Exactly-Once semantics" by leveraging Transaction Semantics at the Topic level.  2️⃣ NATs Jetstream provides "Exactly-one" by leveraging Double acknowledgements from consumers.      🛠️ Exactly Once implementations    1. What is 42 ? I often ask this question to myself. Turns out, it is the number of months I have spent at Openhouse! ;) I am a different person today, then the one who had joined openhouse 3.5 yrs back. I want to extend my gratitude to Akshay Rampuria and Shruti Sekhsaria who have believed in me, challenged me, and helped me grow. I have also learnt a lot and consider myself lucky to have worked with so many awesome people in the engineering - product - design team (current and past). I am taking a short break till I find my next adventure. In this time I will be writing a fiction book, learning about lots of new things, coding some, and exploring what problems are different people solving today. Q) What is the difference between Static Dispatch and Dynamic Dispatch in iOS? Ans: Let's try to understand the difference from a practical example initially, and then we will go deep technically : Suppose there are two food delivery guys: One of them works for Uber Eats and the other one is a direct employee of McDonalds. Suppose they both stay in the same apartment and they both got an order in their respective application and from the same location. Now since Mconald's delivery guy is a direct employee, he is aware of their store and will reach out directly. Whereas, Uber Eat's delivery guy's restaurant is never fixed so he has to check the address/location of the restaurant each time, needing some inquiry as well from the map, the Mall's store map, or from the Mall's help center. Thus the McDonald's delivery partner is fast and direct just like the Static Dispatch, and the Uber Eats Partner is a bit slow even though their address was the same because of are not aware, like the Dynamic Dispatch. 1.⁠ ⁠Static Dispatch: Static dispatch occurs when the method to execute is determined at compile time. Swift heavily favors static dispatch due to its performance benefits, as it allows the compiler to optimize calls by directly referencing the function to execute, eliminating any overhead associated with dynamic resolution. Direct Access: Static dispatch accesses the function's implementation directly. Performance: It's the fastest method of dispatch available in Swift due to its ability to be optimized by the compiler. Usage: Most functions in Swift, including those marked as final in classes, those in structs, enums, and global functions, use static dispatch. Using final can enforce static dispatch for a method in a class by preventing it from being overridden by subclasses. 2.⁠ ⁠Dynamic Dispatch: Dynamic dispatch occurs when the method to invoke is determined at runtime. This approach is more flexible but comes with some performance costs due to the lookup overhead. Virtual Table: Swift uses a vtable for classes that require dynamic dispatch. A vtable is a lookup table used at runtime to resolve method calls. Performance: Slower than static dispatch due to the overhead of determining which method implementation to call at runtime. Usage: Non-final class methods in Swift use dynamic dispatch. This allows subclasses to override and provide their implementations, which the runtime system will invoke correctly. This really showcases the power that cloud-based IDEs can eventually provide the rest of the world, outside of Big Tech. Google, much like other large companies has tons of internal tooling for build systems (similar to Bazel or Buck), caching, version control, virtual file systems, dependency management, containerization, logging and monitoring, etc. Making tools like this more accessible outside of these companies with less maintenance required (meaning less engineering resources for tool development and maintenance) will be exponentially more powerful for engineering delivery as a whole. We are seeing this within many tools from GitHub, AWS, StackBlitz, GitPod, and many others. We are also seeing many Open-Source Build tools for monorepo management that rival these companies, such as Nx.dev, Turborepo by Vercel, Pants, Buck and Bazel. Docker and K8s has enabled containerization and scaling across the world via a single machine or multi-region + multi-cluster deployment strategy. We are now also seeing tech like WASM enter the space for building near-native applications that run in the browser. Soon, native desktop apps and developer experience will fully be automated by the cloud and I am excited to see this. #softwareengineering #devops #buildsystem #tooling

I have worked for 2.5 years as an Android engineer and now working on backend. Here are the pros and cons of working on backend - Cons: 1. Backend is more vast than android, so you need to spend more time on learning and doing your work. 2. Company like Rakuten want you to learn AI, Data science along with your backend skills. Which again requires more time and effort. Pros: 1. You get to know what goes behind the scenes and you have a mountain view perspective about your system, which you don't have as an Android engineer. 2. As you learn more about how the backend system works and work on different services, you become more confident about building your own product one day. 2. The salary you get as a backend engineer is much more compared to Android. 3. The number of job opportunities you have is a lot more in the backend. these are my personal opinion , let me know your thoughts on the comments.

I will tell you a hack to improve your domain knowledge. Whatever the domain you belong to such as frontend, backend, qa etc do the below. 1. Goto ChatGPT / #gemini or other internal genAI portals of your company. 2. Create a chat where you ask the genAI to give you daily updates/trending news/some cool updates about your technology. 3. Also inform the genAI agent that you will enter a shortcut ex: today, update etc and it should provide your ask. 4. Everyday before starting the work, just open it and get an update about your domain and start your work. This will keep you up-to-date about your domain and you can make a positive impact in discussions. Given an array of integers add 1 to the last digit and return the result. Ex: ["1","2",3"] + 1 = ["1","2","4"]. Looks like a very easy problem to solve right ? Let me give you a couple more examples. -> What if the number ends with 9. Ex: ["1", "9", "9"] ? -> What if the number has only 9's ? Ex: ["9","9","9","9"] -> What if I told you, "You cannot convert the array into number" ? Easy questions to solve in other languages are sometimes hard to solve in #javascript. Consistency and clarity in project requirements are essential. Unclear or shifting specs make accurate estimates tough. every developer faces this challenge as expectations keep rising.

I keep meeting developers making 100k-200k fully remotely in Europe. Some of them are ex-FAANG, some of them are not. Many of them have optimised their taxes to under 15%. All of them live in LCOL places. All of them have great WLB. All of them have solid profiles that give them job security in case their current gig stops. All of them are senior+. All of them could shoot for 300k+ careers in places like Zurich, London or Amsterdam. But they prefer this remote option. Most of them work for “younger” companies, in most cases well funded startups/scaleups. These companies are fundamentally remote. They’re capitalising on engineers’ demand for flexibility, and poaching talent from FAANG. Some of them work in AI/LLM, some in Distributed Systems, some in Crypto, some as Full-Stack engineers. Their tech stack is (in order of popularity): - TypeScript - Python (for the ML roles) - Go - Java I dig this new wave. 👍👍 People now are saying that devs have no future. This is so bs… Building complex software systems is one of the hardest things out there. If you’re good, it’s not easy to find someone like you. You’ll be fine, don’t worry. It’s still a great career. It’s an exceptional career, actually, considering it’s one of the few careers that allows you to get such high paying, relatively chill and remote jobs. Let’s gooo

I recently found a huge price discrepancy at a restaurant. They sell an item for ₹520 in-person, but it’s listed for ₹780 on Zomato and Swiggy, which is 50% hike in the actual price. The restaurant explained the price hike includes various fees charged by the platforms to them hence they are adding all in price of that item. Here a Customer is bearing all burden, however restuarant & these companies are making all profit. Here are all charges paid by customer: restuarant charges+ service charges+ delivery charge + platform fee, and GST. Why all burden falls on customer's shoulders? Are these practices even legit ?
