From On-Premises to Multi-Cloud: Yahoo's Kubernetes Transformation Scaling Kubernetes for platforms like Yahoo Sports, Finance, and News is no small feat. Yahoo’s journey from on-premises to multi-cloud architecture is a masterclass in innovation and problem-solving at scale. In a recent talk by Nandhakumar Venkatachalam and Payal Patel, they shared valuable insights into how Yahoo tackled this transformation, balancing complexity, performance, and security. Here are some standout lessons from their experience: 1️⃣ 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗽: In-house tools like KDNC and FLEKS simplified managing Kubernetes clusters across environments. These tools leveraged Terraform and CloudFormation to create a consistent, efficient way of provisioning clusters. 2️⃣ 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀: Yahoo adopted Athenz and Istio to automate RBAC and establish app/service identities. Security and scalability were seamlessly integrated when using OIDC for EKS or Workload Identity Pools for GKE. 3️⃣ 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: With Prometheus, Grafana, and Splunk, Yahoo monitored their infrastructure across 37+ clusters, supporting 135,000 pods, 385,000 containers, and 1.8 million requests per second—a truly massive operation. 4️⃣ 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: Yahoo’s approach to cloud-native networking stood out. Custom CIDRs, VPC Peering, and Istio ingress configurations helped reduce costs and improve performance across AWS and GCP regions. 5️⃣ 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: Bin-packing strategies and resource optimization allowed Yahoo to achieve significant savings. A notable example is their GKE-based Header Bidding project, which reduced costs by 33% while maintaining high throughput. What’s remarkable about Yahoo’s approach is its focus on abstraction—allowing developers to concentrate on building applications while the platform handled the heavy lifting around infrastructure, security, and observability. In our recent poll, Auto Scaling & Load Balancing emerged as the most effective strategy for optimizing costs while maintaining performance in AWS environments, securing an overwhelming 86% of the votes. This result highlights the growing focus on dynamic scaling solutions that align resources with demand in real time. While Reserved Instances/Savings Plans garnered 14% of the votes, the importance of pre-purchasing compute capacity remains clear but secondary to automation-driven efficiency. This week’s #FeaturedFriday spotlights Sumit Bhatia and Chetan Gabhane, the author team behind “Reverse Engineering with Terraform: An Introduction to Infrastructure Automation, Integration, and Scalability using Terraform.” They shared a bit about the writing experience and inspiration: Q: How would you describe the experience of writing your book? “Writing a book is an intensely personal and compelling process for us. It required a blend of tenacity, discipline, and creativity. We felt a range of feelings, including inspiration and exhilaration as well as self-doubt and irritation. The idea for the book came to us when we were working on one of our professional assignments. And that idea made it possible to use #Terraform (#IaC automation) at scale with a variety of current infrastructure technologies. We chose to publish our book as a means of introducing the concept to everyone. A great deal of planning, drafting, and research were done before the book was written. We experienced a sense of contentment and success as the book took shape. Navigating the balance between depth of knowledge and readability was a constant consideration. The commitment required to undertake such a project alongside professional responsibilities was significant, often demanding long hours and disciplined time management. But in the end, finishing a book is a rewarding and life-changing experience for both of us.” Q: What was your main inspiration for writing this book? “We both began our careers in technology at the same company. When we joined the tech industry, we were greatly impacted with the technology that is around us and the massive learning materials, blogs, documentation teaching us something new every day. In our professional lives we both are frequently involved into many industry-leading innovations that keeps us motivated always. We realized as soon as the concept of #reverseengineering occurred that it would significantly advance a wide range of infrastructure automation use cases and, if disseminated globally, assist a great number of enthusiasts in achieving their goals. Our motivation for writing this book stems from our desire to give back to the amazing IT community, from whom we have learnt so much.” Q: Based on this experience, would you ever write another book? “Indeed, without a doubt. Our second book is already being drafted and ideas are being gathered!
