Random sampling in exit polls Several exit polls of 2024 LS elections were far beyond the error margins. Axis My India projected 47% for NDA and 39% for INDIA bloc but the results showed the overestimation of NDA vote share beyond error margins. C-Voter projected a seat share of 38.9% for BJP alone , which was 2.3 points higher than the actual 36.6%. Why is there is so much variations in the exit poll values and the real ones? Well, for this we need to look at the way the exit polls or “post-poll surveys” are done. Exit polls are the surveys conducted on the people , generally outside the polling stations to know about their choice of voting, after they have casted votes. It is done by random sampling of the population. The size of the sample has to representative and the largeness of sample size is immaterial as long as it is significant enough to statistically predict the winner. For good sample representation, the sample should be random and stratified. Once sampling is done and list of respondents are identified (with the help of electoral rolls) , they need to be weighed on the basis of representation of sections in the population- the percentage of women, Dalits, minorities, majority population, and urban vs rural voters. The preparation of good representative sample is what differentiates the estimation of exit polls results. For eg. CDS Lok Niti’s total sample size was nearly 19000 across 23 states and 193 parliamentary constituencies with representation from different sections of society in proportion to their presence in the overall population and that’s why its prediction was within error margins. While Axis MyIndia’s sample size was in 5 lacs across all 543 constituencies and their sample representation was not uniform , resulting in their prediction to be outside the error margins. Apart from these, the correctness of responses from the surveyed people , vote share to seat share conversion (utilized by firms from television channels) and extrapolation of survey data with demographic data (for realistic prediction) also weighs more in  determining the accuracy of exit polls. Investors - Academia - Startups - Volunteers - Students - Enablers… It takes that one spark & persistence to get from position A to position B. Last week, a few of us had organised an Investors Summit & Startup Demo Day in association with Technology Enabling Center of SPPU (Pune University). Raksha & I, were requested to mentor two students who had executed a project as a part of their curriculum & whether these ideas have the potential to be showcased in front of the investors & what would be the best way forward. Being a #community #strategist & an #ecosystem #enabler this was one of the experience to have a dialogue with these inquisitive minds. Being a fan of No Agenda conversation, I had requested for a casual chit-chat with the student volunteers on a #sunday morning a day after the summit. Hoping that we would get to have a free flow conversation with all of them to figure out what more can be done for the students #community in terms of bridging industry-academia interface and institutionalise the flow of knowledge & resources. Since most of the students had no clue what could occur & who would wake up on a #sunday morning for a breakfast mixer after a long day. Guess what, we had one student turn up (check out bottom right pic in the collage). And it was a great 1.5 hr 1-1 discussion for us. This bought back all the memories when we start building a #community one enthusiasts shows up. If they love it, they show up again, giving more ideas and feedback with them becoming our cheerleaders. 💎 Our Jewellery D2C Client Hit Stagnation Due to Credit 🚫 A month ago, I sat down with the founders of an artificial jewelry D2C brand Based in Mumbai, they were struggling with stagnation in their online sales. They were sourcing their products from China for their brand Me: "How's everything going with your sourcing and how many current partners do you have?" Founders: "We’re facing stagnation in sales. Can’t seem to break the ₹2 crore per month mark." 😟 After diving deep into their business model, I discovered a seemingly small but significant issue—they were relying heavily on credit terms with their import agent Let me tell you how is this linked the agent was not exploring new factories and suppliers for this brand as there was no incentive for him Stagnation was hit because no Innovation was happening When I suggested that this might be the root of their problem, they laughed and said: Founders- "Siddhant, humare liye credit importer aur agents se milta hain. It helps us in maintaining cash flows." 😅 I said- “Let's test my assumption. Give me one month, and let's see what happens.” 📆 After onboarding them in Chindo Impex what We Found: Limited Supplier Base: They were sourcing products from a single factory, leading to limited product variety. 🏭 Stifled Cash Flow: Relying on credit meant they had less incentive to explore better pricing or new suppliers. 💸 Delayed Innovation: Their product line was static because the import agent's credit terms constrained their ability to invest in new SKUs. 🛑 Results After One Month: We expanded their supplier base from one to five, introducing them to four additional factories. They launched 10 new SKUs, which quickly became bestsellers, contributing to nearly half of their total monthly revenue! 🚀💎 Founders: “Siddhant, this has been a game-changer for us. Why is india lagging behind in the AI race? India faces several challenges in its efforts to catch up in the global AI race: 1. Limited Research and Development (R&D) Investment: India invests less in AI research and development compared to leading countries like the United States and China. This limits the creation of cutting-edge AI technologies and the ability to compete at the global level. 2. Talent Gap: While India has a large pool of software engineers, there’s a shortage of specialized AI researchers and data scientists. The educational system needs more focus on advanced AI skills, research, and practical applications. 3. Infrastructure Challenges: The availability of high-performance computing infrastructure, necessary for large-scale AI research, is limited. Many AI applications require significant computational power, which is often more readily available in other countries. 4. Data Privacy and Availability: Access to large and diverse datasets is crucial for AI development. India’s stringent data privacy laws and the lack of a well-structured data-sharing framework can hinder AI advancements. 5. Industry Adoption: While AI is being adopted in various sectors, the scale of adoption in India is slower compared to leading countries. Many industries are hesitant to invest heavily in AI due to concerns about ROI, lack of understanding, and the readiness of the workforce. 6. Government Policy and Support: While the Indian government has launched initiatives like the National AI Strategy, the level of support, coordination, and funding is still catching up with more aggressive AI strategies seen in countries like China, which has made AI a central pillar of its national strategy. 7. Start-up Ecosystem: Although India has a growing start-up ecosystem, the support for AI-specific start-ups, including funding and mentorship, is still developing. Technology-related startups - time to buckle up your shoes!   With Ashwini Vaishnaw retaining the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) portfolio, startups in the electronic manufacturing industry are upbeat as they anticipate continued robust policies formed during Modi 2.0 even in Modi 3.0   The current minister has significantly boosted this sector. During Vaishnaw's tenure, mobile phone manufacturing soared to Rs 4.1 lakh crore, a 21-fold increase from 2014-15 .   The government remains proactive in supporting technology startups and advancements. Even recently, the Modi government approved over Rs 10,300 crore for the #IndiaAI Mission to strengthen India's AI ecosystem.   The government's past initiatives have instilled trust in this sector. In December 2021, the government approved Rs 76,000 crore for the semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem, offering incentives for the entire supply chain.
