Vivek is a Senior Technical Lead in a software company. He was at the Technical Lead level for many years before getting a #promotion to the current level. 🔥 LAUNCH ALERT 🔥 I have always found the senior PM interviews challenging. And while I have a certain confidence (some may say inflated) in hitting the metrics on a given job, I still have anxiety around interviews. This is despite having cleared PM interviews in the past at companies like Uber, Flipkart, Google, etc. So why is that? Here are three key reasons, 1. Three cups of Tea to gulp my "Problem Noodles*". *Hot, interesting and tangled problems. Last few days, you wouldn't have seen much in my timeline. Because right now, I am in a cloud of problems :-) Obviously everything will be solved. Needs a good fork, time and fresh breathe. We made our second delivery date failure in 10 years. The print technology we outsource (no money to buy it in-house) is troubling us. People have been working long hours and we see newer errors. Have upped the Quality Commitment team. We have asked a friend to lend some money. We have asked the yet-to-pay customers to open their calendars and see the "Diwali" date coming closer. The vendors have asked us to do the same :-) But, all the saviors are in action now. Anybody who wants to become an impact entrepreneur and wants some true, non-fancy, low-time '"REAL" advise, should call me now :-) :-) Hot Tea can solve all the problem noodles! #journal

A cricketer goes through 1000s hours of net practice before playing real matches. An actor goes through multiple rehearsals before playing the character on the stage. However, most Product Managers depend entirely on their company problems to help them build their product craft. Product Management is a skill, and like any other skill, you need to practice it enough in different contexts, to master this skill. But how do you practice as a product manager? The answer is "Conscious Continuous Learning". Here is how to do it: 1. Pick up an industry of your choice. (Insurtech, Edtech, Social Media, Travel Tech etc.) 2. Select top products and upcoming startups from this industry. (Find them from Crunchbase, Product Hunt, Ycombinator Directory etc. 3. Understand their product from 4 angles: User needs/Market Demand, business goals, UX, and Tech: Read the company blog, do market research, read user reviews, and do some first-hand analysis to do this. 4. Create detailed notes on your observations in a central notebook (use notion, google docs, apple notes: anything that you can access quickly on phone + laptop) 5. Now ask yourself, if you were the product leader in the company, how would you improve different product aspects like onboarding, user growth, retention, engagement, revenue etc? Picking one product every week, and doing an analysis of one industry every month will take your product sense skills miles ahead. If you want to take this to the next level, partner with fellow product managers (find them on LinkedIn/or reach out to me) to exchange feedback on your notes once a month on a call. Developing your skills is your own responsibility. "Conscious Continuous Learning" is your own responsibility. No course, No certification, No company, No product coach, can do this for you. To quote Andre Agassi: "If you don't practice, you don't deserve to win."

Zomato is outperforming Swiggy on every leading metric: •753M vs 578M total orders •₹13,545 Cr vs ₹12,320 Cr in revenue •₹372 Cr in profits vs a loss of ₹1,836 Cr •18.4M vs 12.8M average monthly transacting users •247K vs 196K average monthly transacting restaurant partners Swiggy was in fact leading on some metrics in FY23, but FY24 has been a game changed for Zomato. Now, Swiggy needed to regain its market share. I expected them to focus on execution, reducing losses, and preparing to go public. Instead, they sponsored Shark Tank Season 4 for ₹25 crore and removed Zomato's CEO as a shark😂 It could actually be a smart move. Episodes of Shark Tank often go viral, and judges are usually referred to as the "Zomato founder," "Shaadi(dot)com founder," or "boAt founder." With Deepinder's personal brand growing, Zomato was getting mentioned every time people talked about the show. By spending ₹25 Cr on sponsorship, Swiggy not only promoted its own name but also reduced the indirect marketing Zomato was benefiting from through Deepinder’s presence. You know one of the most common questions we ask is "What makes a PM great?" But we rarely ask "What makes a PM bad." I strongly feel this question is way more important, because you can achieve extreme levels of success "by trying to be 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙥𝙞𝙙, 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙧𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙩." -Charlie Munger Here is my list of things that makes a PM bad:  1. 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗻𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Good at planning, strategy, meetings, etc. But not good at execution or getting things done.       2. 𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀: when PMs have ideas that are neither feasible nor valuable, but they still believe it to be the best idea on the roadmap       3. 𝗜𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝗼 𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀: when they say NO to stakeholders, but don't have a logical and satisfactory reason for the no.       4. 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: when PMs build just for the heck of it, without understanding if the product actually does anything meaningful.       5. 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁: when they act bossy, territorial, and illogical. And by doing that, they make people's lives, work, and success difficult.       6. 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗴𝘂𝗿𝘂𝘀: when all they do is refer to cliched (almost useless) frameworks that they learned about in some book or blog, and have no idea if and how it will be useful for their specific context       7. 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘀: they talk about metrics, keep referring to fancy acronyms, but have no idea where to find the data, what the data looks like, and what the data says about their product.       8. 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲: PMs who have no idea what's happening in the market, what the competition is doing, and how the world is changing.       9. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜-𝗰𝗮𝗻'𝘁-𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲-𝗮-𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲: when PMs are always scared to make decisions. They live in so much fear of doing something wrong, that they end up doing nothing.      10. 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘀: The PMs who will say YES to be nice. They fear upsetting people--the same people who will later say how bad the PM has been      11. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗣𝗠𝘀: when PMs prefer to will exactly what leaders want to hear. They lack courage to push back (or even voice their opinion) when they know others are making bad decisions.      12. 𝗔𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿: when they blame their predecessors or absolutely anyone every time something goes wrong I can keep going with this list, but I will stop. Just writing this is boiling my blood. So here is my message: if there is one thing you can do for your career, it is this: 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝗱 𝗣𝗠 (and you will automatically become a good PM)

Experienced PMs struggle in top tier company interviews while some new college grads crush it. Here is why: Product Thinking: PMs are unprepared for Prospective Interviews across a wide spectrum of common consumer products and stumble. They are surprised by the range of products they are asked about and find it difficult to come up with good responses. Analytical Decision Making: PMs make a lot of Instinctive (Gut) Decisions instead of Principled Decisions with clear explainable rationale. This gets exposed in interviews as they work through prospective questions about products to build, prioritization, metrics debugging, interpreting data and making detailed product decisions. Demonstrating Leadership Skills: PMs tell Long Winded Stories about their project details and people drama instead of Demonstrating the specific leadership skills that the companies are looking for. Communication Skills: PMs misunderstand “Share your underlying thought process” for “Think Out Loud” and as a result don't give “precise responses”. They don’t know how to separate thinking time from speaking time in an interview and how to blend those together to communicate well in an interview.  Mindset: PMs carry a lot of baggage from past failures and current hardships that lead to Unattractive Behaviors. Companies fail, founders don’t. <excerpt> Wishberg, a wishlist site launched in 2012 by Pravin Jadhav and Kulin Shah, struggled and was acquired by Freecharge in 2014, which Snapdeal bought in 2015. Jadhav was then brought on board at Paytm to start Paytm Money for stock trading, and eventually started his own, called DhanHQ. Shah worked at Acko before founding Onsurity, an employee health benefits platform. India’s internet ecosystem is full of stories of founders starting up, shutting down, being acquired, of being forced out, before they build something that works. Many founders who exit their businesses reinvest in new ventures. Freecharge’s Kunal Shah has funded over 200 startups so far. Venture capitalists also often back founders who have tried something new and failed. India’s startup ecosystem is still innovating and is in the process of maturing.
