Key Guidelines The Central Electricity Authority (#CEA) of India has issued detailed guidelines for the formulation of DPRs for Pumped Storage Schemes. These guidelines cover various aspects of the project, including: 1. Project Classification * On-stream: Utilizes existing reservoirs. * Off-stream: Creates separate upper and lower reservoirs. * Closed-loop: No connection to natural water bodies. 2. It plays a pivotal role in separating the hydrocarbon stream produced by the catalytic cracking process into various components based on their boiling points. The C5 fraction, which contains hydrocarbons with five carbon atoms, is a valuable feedstock for various downstream processes, including the production of gasoline, aromatics, and olefins. 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗲 The C5 fractionator operates on the principle of distillation. The feed stream, which is a mixture of hydrocarbons with different boiling points, enters the column near the middle. The column is heated from the bottom, causing the components with lower boiling points to vaporize and rise to the top. The components with higher boiling points condense and collect at the bottom. 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: The C5 feed stream is introduced into the column at a specific location, typically near the middle. 𝗩𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Heat is applied to the bottom of the column, causing the components with lower boiling points (e.g., C3 and C4) to vaporize. These vapors rise through the column, encountering trays or packing that facilitate mass transfer. As the vapors ascend, they condense and reflux back down the column, enriching the vapor phase with lighter components and the liquid phase with heavier components. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗹: The desired C5 fraction is collected as a liquid product from a specific tray or zone within the column. The lighter components (C3 and C4) are withdrawn as overhead product, while the heavier components (C6+) are collected as bottoms product. 𝗥𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿: A reboiler is used to provide heat to the bottom of the column, while a condenser is used to cool the overhead vapors, causing them to condense. Below is an overview of common RCA procedures and some widely used tools and techniques: Root Cause Analysis Procedures 1. Problem Identification Clearly define the problem, including its symptoms, scope, and impact. Collect and analyze relevant data, such as when and where the problem occurred, who was involved, and what was affected. 2. Data Collection Gather information related to the problem through interviews, observations, and review of documentation, logs, and records. Use quantitative and qualitative data to provide a comprehensive understanding of the issue. 3. Causal Factor Identification Identify all factors that could have contributed to the problem. This includes equipment failures, human errors, environmental conditions, and organizational issues. PHA is essential in determining whether a Safety Instrumented System (SIS) is needed. 2-SIS (Safety Instrumented System): A system designed to bring the process to a "safe state" when predefined conditions are breached. It does this through Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs). 3-SIF (Safety Instrumented Function): A specific function within the SIS that ensures the process is maintained in or brought to a safe state. It includes sensors, logic solvers, and final control elements, all of which must work together to detect and mitigate hazards. The devices used in a SIF are selected based on their required Safety Integrity Level (SIL). 4-SIL (Safety Integrity Level): This indicates the acceptable failure rate of a safety function, with levels ranging from 1 to 4. Higher SIL levels correspond to higher risk reduction requirements and lower acceptable failure rates. SIL is closely related to the Probability of Failure on Demand (PFD) and the Safe Failure Fraction (SFF). 5-PFD (Probability of Failure on Demand): This is the likelihood that a safety device will fail to perform its required function when needed. The average PFD (PFDavg) for all elements within a SIF is used to evaluate the SIL. 6-SFF (Safe Failure Fraction): This represents the percentage of failures that are either safe (having no negative impact) or that are detected by the device itself. The focus is particularly on Dangerous Undetected failures, which are those that are not identified and could lead to hazardous situations.

There have been quite a few discussions recently about definitions of degraded vs failed barriers for Well Integrity and a course of actions if the barrier element is right below an allowable leak rate.
