“PraVaHa” New CFD software for aerodynamic design and analysis developed by ISRO - Indian Space Research Organization The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software “Parallel RANS Solver for Aerospace Vehicle Aero-thermo-dynamic Analysis” (PraVaHa) is developed in VSSC to simulate external and internal flows on launch vehicles, winged & nonwinged re-entry vehicles. Initial aerodynamic design studies for launch vehicles demand evaluation of a large number of configurations. Any aerospace vehicle while moving through the earth's atmosphere during ‘launch’ or ‘reentry’ is subjected to severe aerodynamic and aerothermal loads in terms of external pressure and heat flux. Understanding the ‘airflow’ around aircraft, rocket bodies, or Crew Module [CM] during earth re-entry is essential to design the shape, structure, and Thermal Protection System [TPS] requirements for these bodies. The unsteady part of aerodynamics contributes to serious flow issues around such rocket bodies and creates significant acoustic noise during the mission. Computational Fluid Dynamics [CFD] is one such tool to predict the aerodynamic and aerothermal loads which solve numerically the equations of conservation of mass, momentum, and energy along with the equation of state. Presently, CFD is matured enough in terms of its accurate prediction capability for complex aerodynamic flows, as well as faster simulation turnaround time on High-Performance Computing Clusters. This makes it handy for the design and characterization of many initial designs so that a few optimum configurations can be selected for detailed evaluation. PraVaHa has been used extensively in the Gaganyaan program for aerodynamic analysis of human-rated launch vehicles, viz, HLVM3, Crew Escape System [CES], and Crew Module [CM]. It is designed to make use of CPU as well as GPU architecture of available and upcoming supercomputing facilities. The software framework is quite flexible & secure enough, to have collaborative development with academic institutes and government labs. Currently, the PraVaHa code is operational to simulate airflow for Perfect Gas & Real Gas conditions. Validations of the code are underway for simulating the effect of chemical reactions that occur during air dissociation upon ‘earth re-entry’ and ‘combustion’ as in scramjet vehicles. PraVaHa soon will replace most of the CFD simulations for aero characterization, which is currently being carried out using commercial software. This indigenous software is going to help academia and other institutions, engaged in the design of missiles/aircraft/rockets, to find solutions to complex aerodynamic problems. Meet the Indian space launch vehicle startup making global history! Based out of Chennai, they recently launched "Agnibaan - SOrTeD" their technology demonstrator rocket. It was the world's first rocket powered by a single-piece, 3D-printed engine. On its first attempt they made history! Let’s know their story from scratch. Founded in 2017 by Srinath Ravichandran and Moin SPM at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, they picked up the name of the startup from the Hindi and Sanskrit word for fire. They wanted to build a private space exploration company from India. It was to "democratize access to space." Their produced rockets (like Agnibaan), are designed to carry payloads ranging from 30kg to 300kg. It caters to a wider range of space missions and making it more affordable for companies. The company's customers are those who want to build small satellites for low Earth orbit, with payloads that typically include communication and imaging satellites. In 2020, AgniKul Cosmos became the 1st private Indian company to successfully test liquid propulsion engines. In November 2022, they launched India's first private rocket, Vikram-S. In May 2024, After multiple attempts, Agnikul achieved a major milestone with the successful suborbital launch of their Agnibaan rocket. This marked them as the 2nd private Indian company to achieve this feat. Their perseverance and the hard work of their 200-member team have led them to incredible achievements. Agnikul's achievements have garnered them recognition as a leading company in the field of small satellite launch vehicles. They have already partnered with international organizations like the Alaska Aerospace Corporation. Now, Agnikul aims to become a major player in the commercial space launch industry. Ola Electric's Journey with Makenica from Day 0 to 2024 IPO Year 🛵 When we first contacted Ola, they said Noooooooooooooo Because, our FDM machines couldn’t meet their proto requirements. They were right. Fast forward a few years, we upgraded our 3D printers. Now, we support Ola with the fastest part deliveries, up to 1 meter. Sometimes, Ola's requirement is: Can you deliver a full scooter—40 to 50 parts—within a day? Within a day? Seriously ⁉ Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Nobody can do this. It's not possible to do full EV scooter parts in 24 hours. Why? Because bigger parts can take up to 48 hours in the 3D printing machine itself. So, with multiple machines, all the parts printing is possible in 2 days. But again, if you want to do customization within 2 days with painting, it's not possible to do 3D printing with painting in 2 days. It's again nooooooooooooooooooooot possible. So here, it requires post-processing, with a few hours for painting and a few hours for part drying. So, a full scooter with different color trials can be done in 3D printing in 3 days. Yes, so we can say if Ola is asking for full EV scooter parts within a few hours, it means, Ola is pushing the envelope, dreaming big, and working towards a greener tomorrow. Induction coil design and optimisation is doable job now. I don't say it's easy, because it requires good understanding of electric engineerings and induction process. But now on, it does not require any numerical simulation knowledge to perform data-based simulation-driven design. One Minute Read: Advective Assembler DIW [3D Printing] In the manufacturing and design industry, additive manufacturing (AM) is considered as a powerful and well-established technology due to 3 key features 1) rapid prototyping, 2) high design flexibility, and 3) customised fabrication of complex 3D objects. The utilization of specialised modules has spurred the evolution of distinct niches within the world of 3D printing. Some modules/niches include: 1. Multi-material AM: Direct-ink-writing is considered a suitable technique for multi-material printing compared to other AM techniques, as printing is possible with essentially any class of materials that possesses suitable rheological characteristics. 2. Embedded 3D printing: Requires the use of a support bath that allows for omnidirectional printing with rheological characteristics of inks that are conventionally incompatible. 3. Customised printhead: Precise control of multi-material arrangement with the ability to print filaments in a parallel fashion and quick switch between different ink types is endowed possible. Particularly, utilisation of adjective assemblers (a class of co-extrusion printheads) composed of millimeter sized channels connected by splitting, rotating and recombining T-junctions, use chaotic advection to build flow in a fractal-like manner rather than to blend inks. 4. Printhead rotation: Allows for co-extrusion of multimaterials and expands the spatial axes of design beyond X, Y and Z dimensions to provides control over azimuthal variations within printed filaments, enabling creation of intricate and versatile structures. In this work, researchers combined advective assembly, multi-material 3D printing, support bath and rotational axes to produce complex structures with curvilinear topologies. This technique allows for creating structures which are conventionally challenging to obtain, as printing is not restrained to slicing across X, Y and Z dimensions. Inks were composed of poly(acrylic acid) and PEGDA with varying ratios and co-flowed into the advective assembler nozzle. As the inks were photo-curable, patterned filaments were exposed to UV to form freestanding structures such as w bilayers, stacked layers and comb architectures. Control of processing parameters such as flow rate, pitch, radius and orientation provided the ability to expand, contract and bend during printing, allowing for the capability towards building a library of helical structures with patterned cross-link distributions. Ink patterning and assembly within the nozzle enabled the fabrication of filamentous structures with high resolution as small as 100 um, a feat difficult to achieve using other DIW techniques. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) Software: - ANSYS or ABAQUS: FEA tools allow engineers to simulate and analyze the roll cage’s response to crash forces, rollover scenarios, and other stresses. Keeping The ICE Dream Alive !! 🇩🇪 Porsche’s latest patent introduces a groundbreaking innovation to enhance internal combustion engines. This new design features a six-stroke engine with two power and two compression strokes, effectively improving efficiency and power density. The engine uses a unique crankshaft mechanism that moves within a ring (annulus), allowing it to complete a full cycle over 1080° of crankshaft rotation, unlike conventional engines, which operate over 720°. This results in an engine delivering more power per cycle and offering cleaner combustion than traditional two-stroke or four-stroke engines. Brep Vs Visrep🤔 Brep refers to Boundary Representation. As the name suggests, the boundary between solid and non-solid geometry is in view here, the solid geometry being a collection of interconnected surfaces. This is a mathematically precise representation of geometry. Brep formats include all native CAD formats: CATIA’s CATPart and CATProduct, NX’s prt, Solid Edge’s par and asm, Creo’s prt and asm, the SOLIDWORKS sldprt and sldasm, Inventor’s ipt and iam, and AutoCad’s dwg. Brep formats would also include geometric modeling kernel formats such as Creo’s granite, Siemens’ Parasolid, Dassault’s ACIS, Autodesk’s ACIS-derived ‘ShapeManager’ and the Solid Modeling Solutions (SMS) kernel, and neutral formats such as STEP and IGES. Brep Benefits: You can easily convert the model to other Brep formats for collaboration purposes. You can interrogate the model for mass properties. You can get surface area and material data. The model can support Model Based Definition (MBD) and Product Manufacturing Information (PMI) metadata. You can often perform boolean operations on Brep models. You can easily measure and dimension Brep models. Visrep refers to visual representation. Visrep models are approximations of CAD or other geometry, and are polygonal in nature, containing no true CAD data. Polygonal models are composed of a mass of flat polygons; where a Brep model may have curved faces, such as on a cylinder, a polygonal model will use flat polygons to describe the same geometry. Visrep formats include Obj, STL, 3D XML, 3D PDF, Collada (dae) and PLY. Benefits of Visrep: Visrep models are usually smaller than CAD models because they do not have to contain as much structural information and metadata such as PMI. Of course, this depends on the resolution of the polygonal model, because they can be saved at different resolutions. The benefits of Visrep models include: Often, the purpose of the Visrep format is simple part or assembly visualization; users may want to see the entire car, airplane, robot or assembly line as a complete unit, something that is doable with a Visrep format but impossible to do with a full-blown CAD Brep file. In some cases, polygonal formats such as STL can actually be used for machining. STL files are the predominant choice for 3D Printing. Polygonal models are useful for the ‘entertainment and the arts’ sector, for animation, 3D modeling, game development, virtual reality and augmented reality.
