From On-Premises to Multi-Cloud: Yahoo's Kubernetes Transformation Scaling Kubernetes for platforms like Yahoo Sports, Finance, and News is no small feat. Yahoo’s journey from on-premises to multi-cloud architecture is a masterclass in innovation and problem-solving at scale. In a recent talk by Nandhakumar Venkatachalam and Payal Patel, they shared valuable insights into how Yahoo tackled this transformation, balancing complexity, performance, and security. Here are some standout lessons from their experience: 1️⃣ 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗽: In-house tools like KDNC and FLEKS simplified managing Kubernetes clusters across environments. These tools leveraged Terraform and CloudFormation to create a consistent, efficient way of provisioning clusters. 2️⃣ 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀: Yahoo adopted Athenz and Istio to automate RBAC and establish app/service identities. Security and scalability were seamlessly integrated when using OIDC for EKS or Workload Identity Pools for GKE. 3️⃣ 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: With Prometheus, Grafana, and Splunk, Yahoo monitored their infrastructure across 37+ clusters, supporting 135,000 pods, 385,000 containers, and 1.8 million requests per second—a truly massive operation. 4️⃣ 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: Yahoo’s approach to cloud-native networking stood out. Custom CIDRs, VPC Peering, and Istio ingress configurations helped reduce costs and improve performance across AWS and GCP regions. 5️⃣ 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: Bin-packing strategies and resource optimization allowed Yahoo to achieve significant savings. A notable example is their GKE-based Header Bidding project, which reduced costs by 33% while maintaining high throughput. What’s remarkable about Yahoo’s approach is its focus on abstraction—allowing developers to concentrate on building applications while the platform handled the heavy lifting around infrastructure, security, and observability. Here are some key takeaways that I found particularly valuable: Skills Required to Land a Remote Job: 1. Communication Skills: Both written and spoken. 2. Comfort with Video: Being comfortable working with your camera on. 3. Standing Out: Ability to stand out through your work. Salary Range for Remote Jobs: - Your salary should match your role, not your location. - If a US-based worker earns $100, you should be getting at least $70-$80 for the same work. - High salary offers (e.g., 1 crore, 2 crore) are rare for the first remote job unless you're exceptionally unique. Advantages of Remote Jobs: 1. Work with an international workforce. 2. Understand cultural nuances better. Challenges in Remote Jobs: 1. Difficulty in building relationships. 2. Boundary isolation. 3. Taxation issues. 4. Language and timezone issues. How to Get a Remote Job? - The Easy Answer: Apply for remote jobs on job portals.   Reality Check: "Isse ghanta kuch ni hone wala." Challenges with Job Portals: 1. Love for Kubernetes 💙 🤔 When we have services which exposes the pod to the external world using LoadBalancer mode, why do we need to have Ingress and an Ingress Controller? 👉 Service in K8S filled the gap of losing the connectivity caused by the new IP assigned to the newly created pod as Pods are ephemeral in nature. 👉K8S Service ensures the connectivity to the application inside the container in a pod from external network using service type as Load balancer and it equally distributes the traffic among other pods of same deployment, considering the replica set is mentioned as more than 1. 👉 But, the service also some limitations. 0️⃣     Cost - It requires individual Load balancer static IP for each service, so the cost becomes a factor. 1️⃣   No TLS – Load balancer service does not provide TSL out of the box. 2️⃣     Limited Load balancer features - The Load balancer type does not provide the other benefits like ◉   Host based routing ◉ Path based routing ◉   Maintaining session to one particular pod But on the other side, Ingress gives the solution to all these limitations of K8s service. 0️⃣     Cost saving – Only one load balancer IP for multiple services. 1️⃣    TLS termination for security. 2️⃣    Advanced routing like path based or host based.   𝑩𝒖𝒕, 𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒂𝒍𝒔𝒐 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒍𝒊𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔, 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒗𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉 𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒄𝒌 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒐𝒅, 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒚 𝒐𝒏 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔 & 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒃𝒆.

🔒 AWS Pro Tip: Securely Access AWS Resources Across Accounts Using IAM Assume Role 🔒 Need to manage resources across multiple AWS accounts without juggling user credentials? With *IAM Assume Role*, you can securely access resources across accounts or even delegate permissions within a single account. ### 🔹 Steps to Assume an IAM Role in AWS: 1️⃣ Create a Role in the target AWS account with the required permissions and set up *trust policies* for the account or users who need access. 2️⃣ Assign the Role ARN (Amazon Resource Name) to users/groups or applications that need access. 3️⃣ Use the AWS CLI or SDKs to assume the role: - CLI Command: `aws sts assume-role --role-arn "arn:aws:iam::ACCOUNT_ID:role/ROLE_NAME" --role-session-name "SESSION_NAME"` 4️⃣ Export Temporary Credentials: The output provides temporary credentials. Use them to authenticate and access resources. 5️⃣ Access Resources seamlessly with the assumed permissions. Be mindful of the session timeout!
