Thank you Telangana Today for publishing our opinion "Can ethanol fuel the future?". In this opinion, I along with Rahul Jha argued that only policy of self-reliance will not be helpful, and we need a focused approach on energy conservation with the help rather than a mere policy. The policy on ethanol-based fuel from grain will be a boost for states like Government of Bihar to positioned them and be a leader on the future fuel production and take the benefits from that. Since India is increasingly dependent on crude oils imports and recent estimates from NITI Aayog predicted an annual savings of around Rs 30,000 crore if ethanol-based fuel is adopted in the near future. According to a NITI Aayog report, India needs around 13.6 billion liters of ethanol to satisfy overall demand. Independent researchers estimate that approximately 3% of the gross cropped area, or about 7.1 million hectares, needs to be dedicated to these crops. Additionally, more than 50% of maize is used by the feed industry, and future trends indicate that demand from the poultry and livestock sectors will exceed maize production. This will certainly be a boom for the agrarian states in near future to be a leader in the production of ethanol-based fuel. Comments are welcome. Beginning a life-long learning journey: About 5 years ago, the former DG of  CSIR, Dr. RA Mashelkar had co-authored a book with the title “ From leapfrogging to pole vaulting : creating the magic of sustainable transformation”, exhorting its readers to shift from reactive leapfrogging to proactive pole-vaulting through radical transformation. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌-𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐬 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 (𝐒𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥) 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 & 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 In recent years, India has seen a surge in the M-Tech programs offered by several private universities. While these programs promise advanced education, a closer examination that I did recently reveals a stark contrast between the promises made and the actual academic outcomes. Many of these programs lack fundamental components critical for the holistic development of a graduate student. I am summarizing my observations below: 1. Lack of GATE Qualification and Hefty Fees: Unlike the rigorous selection criteria of public institutions that mandate GATE qualifications, many private universities admit students without this benchmark. This lenient admission process not only questions the quality of students entering these programs but also raises doubts about the overall credibility of the degree conferred. Adding to this is the exorbitant fee structure, often several lakhs per annum, without providing commensurate facilities or quality education. 2. Absence of Hands-on Training: Unfortunately, many private institutions lack even a single lab to train their M-Tech students. This absence of practical or industry-standard exposure severely hampers the learning process, as theoretical knowledge alone is insufficient to understand and solve real-world engineering problems. Students are deprived of the opportunity to experiment, innovate, and learn through practical experiences. 3. Faculty: Many of these institutions employ faculties who lack hands-on knowledge or real-world experience or proper PhD level training. Students are often taught by individuals who have never engaged in significant research or industry projects, leading to a disconnect between what is taught and what is required in the professional world. 4. Missing M-Tech Project Opportunity: Many private institutions fail to offer genuine M-Tech projects, leaving students to fend for themselves in finding internships or external projects. Those who cannot secure such opportunities are left without any substantial project experience. Given these issues, there is an urgent need for the government to step in and streamline graduate programs: 👉Enforce GATE: Make GATE qualification mandatory for admission to M-Tech programs to ensure a minimum standard of student quality. 👉Audits: Conduct regular audits to ensure they have the necessary infrastructure, including well-equipped laboratories.   👉Faculty Qualifications: Mandate minimum experience for faculty members to ensure they can provide high-quality education with practical / hands-on / industry oriented / real-world experience. 👉Projects: It must be an institute's responsibility to ensure the opportunity to do a master's project either within the institution or through industry collaborations. #NEP #HEI #ManagementEducation #Leaders While established Universities are adjusting to the newer patterns/formats and structures laid down by NEP 2020, young institutions are zipping to revamp complete systems. As announced by UGC in 2023, we are seeing the collaborations and setting up of foreign Universities on Indian soil. Recently Ext Affairs Min S Jaishankar handed over LOI to representatives of University of Southampton which is opening it's first campus in India shortly.. A great step indeed. “UK's University of Southampton has become the 1st foreign univ to set up its offshore campus in India under the new National Education Policy and shall be active by July 2025” (ET,29/8/24) . Expected to start its academic programmes in business and management, computing, law, engineering et al, British Council is looking up for bright a future. Wanting to attract the talent pool of Indian students, helping placements and a student exchange program and opportunities for cross cultural learning forms the core reason. Though between 2019 to 2022, there has been a significant rise in students going to UK for studies, there is clearly a reduction in number of Indian students wanting to study in UK in 2024. The reasons could be geo-political, conflicts, insecure future and pre-dominantly, change in government rules out there. Apparently, a crackdown by the UK government on granting Visas in 2023 have created an incredible impact. Is this therefore a DTH strategy that the Brits wish to adopt ? International students take back much less than what they give to UK is a proven fact. In such circumstances, are they taking a calculated risk by initiating setting up of Universities in India ?  Studying in the foreign land versus studying in a foreign University in India, will it be equivalent – socially? So much can be said on this. Next, what happens to the stamp of a foreign land, living and studying the cultures and getting fresh perspectives on a foreign land? Clearly, I see a new sub segment arising here who would want to enjoy the perks of a foreign university, living closer home and with lesser risks ( pre-conceived ones mostly). It all depends on the courses, faculty, fee structures, degrees and placements offered, along with the Brand Value of the University  – almost same reasons why any student selects a specific educational institute across the globe. A new competitor and game changer is on the anvil with a possibility of high success ratio. Institutions are no more centres of knowledge dissemination alone. But, is adopting and adapting to western systems the only way of being ahead or is it more important to have better and innovative educational systems based on our own requirements? Why not strengthen and provide better education systems at indigenous levels instead? Are we truly going to become the Knowledge Centre of the world ? If this news has not made your organisation leaders to sit up and think, it's time one should better do it!

Although India's publication record has increased tremendously in the last two decades ( we are # 3 in the rank), our rank in the global innovation index is 40. This data suggests that the new knowledge that we generate does not translate into social/economic benefits. 2. He also talks about his struggle in starting a company and his efforts to scale up 3. Having worked on technology development, academia-industrial collaboration, IP, and start-ups for the last ten years, I can relate to some of his frustrations. I think one of the main reasons why India is not doing well in innovation is because "the research output" is only measured in the number of papers other activities such as technology development, academia-industrial collaboration, IP, and start-ups are not considered that important and hence there is little incentive for people to work on this. 4. Liberal policy and a push for Autonomy is contributing to a significant rise in the number of Autonomous Higher Education Institutions in Kerala. In other states of India the number of Autonomous HEIs is already high. Kerala is a relatively late entrant. Autonomy brings with it responsibilities of the highest kind, especially in education. When the onus is shifted from the University to which the HEI is affiliated to the shoulders of the HEI, however limited that autonomy may be, rising to the expectation is a challenge. With no serious academic audits by the watchdog bodies and relaxed entry norms by the apex authority, the scene looks blurred now. The question is how many of those HEIs which rush to have the Autonomous status, will be able to lift themselves to perform at a level which sure must be higher on multiple academic and administrative indices. Vision matters, and the Mission pathways which are shaped by the exposure to and awareness of existing quality Institutions. Whenever and wherever autonomy is employed as a tool to run things 'our' way, and when that 'our' is stretched to mean devious paths to inflated quality and fragile, bogus institutional profile, autonomy begins to restrict, rather than let loose genuine quality. LEAD College of Management has turned autonomous recently and is in the process of building the academic resources and professional acumen to deliver. Dr. Joe Kizhakkooden, Asst Controller of Examinations, St. Thomas College, Thrissur, was with us at LEAD to see the way the examination cell and procedures are set up and to provide more inputs, especially regarding the practical difficulties an HEI might face as it transitions to autonomy from the affiliated mode. Thank you Dr. Joe for the time spent with us. We are sure that the anecdotes and tips will help us a lot on our way forward, not to mention the procedures and processes you laid emphasis on. CO2 Sequestration [Viscous-Fingering; Capillary-Fingering] 1.  Are we critically deciding the resultant phase (gas/liquid/super-critical) of injected CO2 into the formations (deep saline aquifers; depleted oil/gas reservoirs; unminable coal seems) – ‘solely’ as functions of aquifer/reservoir temperature and pressure? Or ‘CO2 storage capacity’ will be also taken into account? 2.  Following the injection of CO2 into saturated subsurface formations, CO2 would try to displace the existing pore fluids that remain to be more viscous than the injected CO2. If so, then, to what extent, Capillary Number and Viscosity Ratio would try to define the resulting displacement pattern of the immiscible fluids, if (a) Velocity of the invading fluid keeps changing with space and time? (b) IFT between CO2 and brine keeps fluctuating significantly? (c) Contact angle of brine on a substrate associated with a drainage condition remains varying? (d) Viscosity values of CO2 and brine keep varying significantly with time and space? How easy would it remain to measure IFT and contact angle of brine on rock surface – surrounded by gaseous/liquid/super-critical CO2 - @ field conditions – towards obtaining Capillary number and Viscosity ratio? 3.  How do we have a control over - capturing the combination of viscous and capillary forces @ field-scale that would essentially dictate the resulting displacement pattern (viscous-fingering/capillary-fingering/stable displacement)? How exactly to delineate the phase-boundaries for the respective displacement pattern – with varying pore-size distribution and aquifer geometry? With evolving aquifer/reservoir pore-geometry, whether, Capillary fingering would only occur under a relatively lower CO2 injection rates, irrespective of Viscosity ratio? 4.  As the viscosity of CO2 being lesser than brine (viscous fingering develops during CO2 injection as the viscosity values of gaseous, liquid and super-critical CO2 generally remain to be orders of magnitude smaller than brine viscosity @ field pressure/temperature conditions), following viscous fingering, whether CO2 – by default – would flow through the least resistive pathways – in the absence of sweeping the most of the brine, which remains located out of the least resistive or preferential pathways? In such cases, how easy would it remain to deduce the resultant displacement efficiency (as a function of Capillary number and viscosity ratio)? Feasible to control CO2 flow pattern in order to obtain maximum displacement efficiency? Or CO2-water foams be used to attain stable-displacement and to enhance brine sweeping? How exactly to deduce the displacement ratio (which involves CO2 saturation after breakthrough) – in transition zones (the crossover zone between capillary-fingering and viscous-fingering; or, between viscous-fingering and stable-displacement) @ field-scale? Dear Researchers, It gives us immense pleasure to announce that the *Department of Applied Computational Science and Engineering, GL Bajaj Institute of Technology and Management, Greater Noida, India*, is organising the 1st *International Conference on Pervasive Computational Technologies (ICPCT-2025)*.
