Bulk Drugs and Drug Intermediates #Imports Set to #Drop by #12% in FY24 The #growth projections for the Indian pharma industry during FY24 and FY25, estimated at 7%-9%, will drive #incremental #requirements for #APIs. Enhanced capacity additions under the PLI schemes are anticipated to meet these requirements. Imports of bulk drugs & intermediates into India have experienced a notable 12% decline in the first three quarters of the fiscal year 2023-24. The data provided by the DGCIS reveals that, from April to December 2023, the imports totalled approximately 2.95 lakh MTs, valued at $3 billion. In comparison, the same period in the previous fiscal year recorded 2.92 lakh metric tonnes, valued at $3.41 billion. Importantly, imports from China exhibited a more significant #decline of 9.45% during this period, reflecting the country's reduced contribution to the Indian pharmaceutical supply chain. The value of imports from China dropped to $2.15 billion, down from $2.38 billion in the corresponding nine months of the previous fiscal year. For the quarter spanning October to December 2023, bulk drugs and intermediates imports reported a substantial 33.3% decline at $770.96 million, in contrast to the $1.16 billion recorded in the same period of the preceding year. Quantity-wise, there was a corresponding drop of around 32%, with imports totalling 69,170 metric tonnes compared to 1.01 lakh metric tonnes during the same quarter in the previous fiscal year. Imports from China during the last quarter of 2023 declined by approximately 30.4% to $550.32 million, down from $790.35 million in the October to December 2022 period. Quantity-wise, imports decreased from 77,915 metric tonnes to 51,126 metric tonnes during the comparable period. The Indian government has been actively working to reduce dependence on bulk drug imports, particularly from China. Initiatives such as the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme aim to promote domestic manufacturing of critical key starting materials (KSMs), drug intermediates, and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Additionally, support for bulk drug parks in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh, with a financial outlay of Rs. 3,000 crore underscores the #commitment to #fostering domestic production through common infrastructure facilities. The completion of projects under the PLI scheme is anticipated to positively impact the industry's reliance on imports. By the end of FY24, the dependency on imports is projected to decrease to 69%, with a further reduction to around 65% as major projects become operational in the fourth quarter of FY24, and additional projects commence in FY25.

Emcure Pharma Receives SEBI Nod To Float IPO Emcure Pharmaceuticals Limited, backed by Bain Capital has received approval from Securities and Exchange Board of India's (SEBI) to raise funds through initial public offering (IPO), according to information from the markets regulator. The Company, which filed its preliminary IPO papers with Sebi in December 2023, received observations on June 10, it added. In Sebi's parlance, its observations means its go-ahead to float the public issue. Emcure Pharmaceuticals' IPO is a combination of fresh issuance of equity shares worth Rs 800 crore and an offer for sale (OFS) of 1.36 crore equity shares by promoters and existing shareholders, as per the draft red herring prospectus. Those selling shares in the OFS include promoter Satish Mehta and investor BC Investments IV Ltd, an affiliate of US-based private equity major Bain Capital, as per a PTI report. IPC set to release digital Indian Pharmacopoeia in August The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) is set to release digital Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) in August this year in order to improve its accessibility and convenience of usage.   Speaking at the inauguration of Disso India Ahmedabad 2024 at Institute of Pharmacy, Nirma University, Ahmedabad on June 28, Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) Rajeev Raghuvanshi talked about four big-ticket projects which are in the pipeline. Digital IP is one of them.   “It is now in the final stages of development. Digital IP will make it easier for all drug inspectors to carry out efficient factory audits,” added Raghuvanshi who is also Secretary-cum-Scientific Director, IPC.   The ninth edition of IP launched by the Union ministry of health and family welfare on July 1, 2022 has four volumes which are quite heavy. Digitization will help stakeholders access IP from anywhere thus saving their cost and time.   The IP 2022 is fairly large. In addition to dissolution criteria for all prolonged release formulations, it includes 1,245 monographs for formulations, 930 monographs for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), 92 new monographs for drugs and 12 additional general chapters.   Of the 92 new monographs, there are 60 chemical, 21 vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids etc., 3 biotechnology-derived therapeutic products, 4 human vaccines, 2 blood and blood related products, 2 herbs and herbal related products, and 7 phytopharmaceutical ingredient category monographs.    IP 2022 contains 3,152 monographs, covering 70% of reference materials for quality control in the country. It includes 652 pharma reference substances, 300 impurity standards, and monographs for remdesivir API and injection, favipiravir API and tablets, 2DG API & powder & sachet, and rapid microbiological testing.   The DCGI also shed light on another digital platform-- Digital Drug Regulatory System to be introduced by CDSCO which would cover the entire regulatory value chain in this country. The platform will bring aboard all industry participants, including manufacturers, retailers, and regulatory agencies, he added.   “Every single party with an interest in the regulatory value chain—government, private, semi-government—would be invited to participate on that platform. You therefore have answers for a wide range of quality-related problems. Aurobindo Pharma to consider first ever share buyback on July 18; Stock surges to a record high. Shares of Aurobindo Pharma Ltd., the Hyderabad-based drug manufacturer, surged as much as 6% to hit a record high of ₹1,408.75, after it said on Sunday that it will hold a board meet on Thursday, July 18, to consider a buyback of equity shares. The buyback of shares could either be via the tender offer route or through the Open Market route. Based on the data available on the BSE, this is the first such instance of the company planning to carry out a buyback of its equity shares.
