Proposed GST Hike on Apparel Threatens MSMEs and Jobs: CMAI (Clothing Manufacturers Association of India) Warns of Economic Fallout 🔸Under new recommendations :- • Ready Made Garments : upto ₹ 1,500 will retain 5% GST rate . • RMG b/w ₹1,500-₹10,000 will come under bracket of 18% ( Presently 12%) • RMG above ₹10,000 are proposed to fall under the highest GST bracket of 28% 🔸The Issue :- 1) Small Textile & Garment businesses Operate on low profit margins. 2) Increasing GST will make clothes more expensive, reducing demand. 3) Small businesses may struggle to compete with larger companies or imported goods. 🔸What will be the impact :- 1) Job Losses : CMAI predicts 1,00,000+ jobs could be lost as MSMEs might shut down 2) Consumers will have to pay more direct impact on Middle Class & Lower class 3)Reduced Exports: India’s competitiveness in global markets might decline as costs rise.

And the debate around hybrids and electrics is getting interesting. While earlier it was just the so-called ‘Japanese lobby’ that was pushing for lower duty for hybrids (arguing they were intermediates before EV acceptance and resultant sales onslaught), now even the European cos are making the same demand. Klaus Zellmer, global CEO of Škoda Auto (which is leading VW group’s India investments and strategy), had this to say, “… lessons learnt in China, Europe and the US suggest that just giving options between BEVs (battery electric vehicles) and ICE – take it or leave it –is not the right way. Chinese EV giant BYD has decided to just stick to importing cars to India — as of now — as its plans to get $1 billion FDI to the market were rejected by the govt last year amidst growing tensions between the two countries. BYD headquarters has also decided against applying for benefits under the Indian govt’s new EV policy as there are “lot of strings which are not clear in that and a lot of things on which we would not be able to fulfil commitments or requirements,” said top company official in India Rajeev Chauhan. The government on Friday said India's toy exports dipped from USD 177 million in 2021-22 to USD 152 million in 2023-24 due to overall decline in the global demand of these products. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada said that India's key export markets including the USA, UK and Germany have also registered decline in toys imports by 16-20 per cent.
