The Nano in Healthcare track kicked-off with an enlightening session on the 'Development of Vaccines/Nanovaccines for Multi-drug Resistant Diarrhoea' by Prof. Dhirendra Katti, Director of IIT Goa. Driving Impact in Gender Equality in STEM: Grand Challenges India, BIRAC, and WomenLift Health Launch Inaugural Women Leadership in STEM Program Grand Challenges India, the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, along with WomenLift Health, have launched the inaugural 2024 Women Leadership in STEM (WLS) program to drive impact in gender equality in STEM leadership in India. The Women Leadership in STEM offers a pathway for advancing gender equality in STEM in India, underscoring a commitment to elevating the power and influence of mid-career women in STEM fields by equipping them with essential tools, structured mentorship, coaching, peer support, and leadership skills for high impact. The Women Leadership in STEM program is poised to promote gender equality and enhance the contributions of Indian scientists in the global science and technology landscape through more gender-equal, inclusive, and diverse STEM leadership in the country. By fostering a robust pipeline of women leaders in STEM, this initiative will contribute to systemic change and drive the nation’s progress towards greater gender equality in STEM fields. The inaugural 2024 WLS cohort comprises twenty leading women scientists from public and private research institutions across India, including the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Tirupati, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Representing diverse voices and expertise in fields such as genomics, veterinary sciences, architecture, and design sciences, these women leaders are set to drive advancements and take on leadership roles in STEM in India. Dr Shirshendu Mukherjee, Mission Director, BIRAC, emphasized the importance of gender equality for sustainable progress in India’s STEM ecosystem, stating, “We are committed to elevating women’s leadership in STEM. This initiative is a crucial step in advancing women scientists by nurturing their leadership skills.” Complementing the Government of India’s ongoing efforts towards gender equality, including the “Nari Shakti” or women-led development agenda, the WLS program consists of three fully funded, five-day residential workshops designed to equip high-potential women leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to initiate purposeful initiatives and enhance their influence in their respective STEM fields. The cohort will receive expert guidance and mentorship from leading STEM experts in India, including Dr. Manisha Shridhar, Regional Advisor, WHO India, who remarked, “For too long, women’s potential to drive groundbreaking innovations in STEM and transformative change has been unrecognized.

Can quick commerce for Prescription Medicines finally take off? Swiggy’s foray into 10 min Rx medicine delivery in partnership with Pharmeasy could turn out to be a game changer for both companies. More importantly, this could be the first structured attempt to bring #medicine delivery from few hours/next day down to 10 min q-com umbrella First up, what’s in it for each partner: For #Pharmeasy, 10 min delivery against its current 24-48 hours timeline is a huge differentiator against competitors like #Tata1Mg or #Apollo247 and could allow it to regain market share that dropped from >30% in late 2022 to 15% in late 2023 For #Swiggy #Instamart, this is an entry into a new segment that allows cart enrichment to push up average order values and also offers a play in a more profitable #pharmacy #distribution business Assumed Tech and Operational factors are at par with other online businesses, the factors that uniquely need to be solved for online pharmacy business are Assortment, Substitution/Upselling, Frequency and size of Purchases IMO, if the model revolves around Pharmeasy installing a store within Swiggy’s dark store for Medicines then its tough to solve Assortment at scale for 10-min deliveries. It’s not that Assortment can’t be solved in a store-in-store model. But it may need a totally separate tech-stack and micro-area based intelligence around what consumers want to purchase in 10 mins and this can take months and years of intelligence to build Next issue of over-the-call #substitution or #upselling means a Dr from Pharmeasy (or swiggy) calling and asking a consumer if Brand X is not available can we deliver Brand Y. Or you may require a multivitamin M along with this medicine, so can we supply Product M alongside your order? This doesn’t happen in #quickcommerce for fmcg as it will slow down the delivery promise. So can this work for q-com Pharmacy deliveries Frequency and Order Size are major factors that may get addressed with this collaboration because q-com has reached daily order frequency and >INR 500 average order sizes For the collaboration to give a seamless experience, some questions will need to be addressed upfront like: - Between Swiggy and Pharmeasy will there be only one app in a city for medicine orders? If no then won’t Pharmeasy start losing orders to Swiggy - Unlike e-commerce, would post order tele-calling work in q-com for medicines - Is effective pricing between the two apps going to be different or same - Will Swiggy offer the entire range of medicine products that Pharmeasy will also offer in an overlapping area The collaboration does promise a lot of disruption and learnings for online pharmacy business along the way.. Indian Cancer Genome Atlas (ICGA) Foundation has launched a new data portal to advance cancer research in India. This portal will serve as a repository for India-specific cancer genomics data, to improve treatment options. The ICGA Foundation emphasized the need for Indian-specific datasets to address the unique molecular variations of cancers in Indian patients. The portal initially features data from 50 breast cancer patients and plans to expand to 500 patients in the coming months. Shekhar Mande and Suveera Dhup, from the ICGA Foundation, highlighted the significance of this initiative in addressing the lack of Indian data in global cancer research. The portal offers a complete multi-omics dataset, including genomic and proteomic information, for breast cancer patients. This initiative aligns with the National Institutes of Health The Cancer Genome Atlas(TCGA) program in the US and aims to contribute to global cancer research advancements. This conference is designed to serve as a primer for the evolving field of precision diagnostics and therapeutics for rare diseases in India. The focus is on improving awareness about rare diseases and scientific/technological advancements in India with therapeutic potential for the benefit of patients and students. The meeting is constructed around several structured discussion sessions that bring together scientists, physicians and patient groups. We hope that such dedicated discussion forums on several critical aspects will help relevant development of these therapies in India. This meeting will provide opportunities for students and clinical fellows to learn more about Gene Therapy. Additionally, we hope that together with government and industry participants, new networks and collaborations can be formed to push forward rare disease treatments in India.
