Continuing my #100PapersChallenge, In the last paper, I discussed 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐲𝐳𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐭 𝐓𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, addressing state-machine replication amidst malicious nodes. Another critical question is whether we can obtain trustworthy storage from 𝐧𝐨𝐧-𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐲 servers. Today's paper tackles this challenge. The paper designs a networked file system that's secure even with untrusted servers, titled "Secure Untrusted Data Repository (SUNDR)." Similar ideas are used in git and blockchains. If you're skeptical, consider real security incidents, such as compromised Debian servers (2003), SourceForge (2011), and Canonical Ubuntu (2019). The paper introduces a protocol achieving 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲, ensuring clients detect any integrity or consistency failures.
