Peak-end Rule: Nobel prize winner Daniel Kahneman, through his research, established that people’s memories of experiences are shaped by peak moments, whether good or bad, and by how those experiences ended. Why am I quoting this reference? After India team won the T20 World Cup, two senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma called it quits from this format of the game. News is coming through today that Ravindra Jadeja also has called it quits. And that made me think as to how will quitting at the peak be judged by history? Kahneman states that it will depend on what the person did in the last few weeks and months. If the person kept bragging about their accomplishments, taking credit for everything and settling scores, they will be judged as "selfish". If the person went about thanking those who helped them, encouraging others to give their best and mending fences with adversaries, they will be judged as "selfless". That is because people around this person will be observing everything - their body language, how they interact with the successor, with their peers and team members. They will observe this person's sincerity and genuineness in all their actions. They are observing if this person is bitter while quitting or are they gracious? Coming back to Virat and Rohit, they decided to call it a day and walk off into sunset. Both wanted to get the job done (bring the cup home) and leave cricket in a better place. Sport is all about timing and both these stalwarts couldn’t have chosen their moments better. Well played, Virat & Rohit. We will continue to follow you in Tests and ODIs. The peak-end rule of Daniel Kahneman talks about leaders creating a strong peak, finishing on a high note, managing expectations of self and others and focusing on the details. Talking about Career Shifts with Gopal A Iyer Gopal is a powerhouse with 20+ years of experience in the HR domain. Recently, he shifted gears and took on the role of COO at a consulting firm. We spoke at length about the need for professionals to explore more career opportunities than the path they have always followed. We both agreed that entrepreneurship is a path that more and more people should consider taking. There's clearly a slow down in hiring in most knowledge sectors, owing to multiple reasons, including - elections in India and US, global economic uncertainty, advent of AI and much more. LAAPATAA LADIES This film is an adaptation of Biplab Goswami’s story ‘Two Brides’ and is set in the era of pre-technology that hit Bharat in 2001 when basic technology was missing. During the time of its CINEMA release, it did not appeal to me. While I end up watching it on OTT with the recommendation of family. It totally changed my perception. # The film stands out in the screenplay, which never allows for a dull moment and keeps the audience's mind gripped. # The cinematography is one to savour, it alleviates the plot of a rustic rural location to the real Bharatiya landscape. # The songs bring a soft touch of love and care with background scores blends well with the scene uplifting the audience mood. The real ethos of ‘Laapataa Ladies’ lies in its message coupled with humor around women empowerment and societal taboos. The film hilariously captures a sequence of events of two brides and one groom as it traverses through their lives and how they face the situation they land up in. The two brides are with contrasting characters, the portrayal of the household skills of innocent Phool is complemented by the thirst for knowledge of progressive Jaya. It is interesting to watch how this contrast brings's out common threads of honesty and humanity. One can relate to that throughout the film. -- I loved 'Laapataa Ladies', for its delightful story telling, heartful character building, mindful social messaging with absolute subtlety. Pay transparency is increasingly discussed in workplaces worldwide, and India is no exception. At CompUp (YC S22).io, we’ve observed how transparency can reshape organizational dynamics, but it’s essential to understand both the benefits and challenges. Over the last few months, I've had the privilege to speak to CHROs, HR leaders of mid-sized as well as giant orgs about many topics that concern the future of work, including compensation, pay transparency, DEI, better and more efficient policies and processes. Like most new-age, forward-thinking concepts, pay transparency, too is a double edged sword. Here are the PROs 💪 ⚖️Promoting Pay Equity: Employees can see that compensation decisions are based on merit, not bias. 🔨Improving Morale and Retention: Transparency fosters trust, increasing employee satisfaction and loyalty. 🫷 Reducing Pay Discrimination: Transparent pay practices help identify and correct pay disparities, reducing legal risks. Evolution of the #CHRO role in India is an insightful article. Of the trends highlighted in the article, two stand out and make me curious. Firstly, the rise of female CHROs is encouraging, but what is the underlying factor? Is it merit-based hiring or positions set out for women only? Additionally, we should deep dive into the impact of this trend on business performance. The quote, "CEOs and boards expect CHROs to be their proactive and strategic advisors, bringing a 'business ownership' mindset as opposed to focusing only on the HR agenda," should be a wake-up call for all #HumanCapital professionals. Another valuable insight is the underrepresentation of CHROs on #boards. The strategic value of Human Capital professionals goes beyond hiring and retention and is an untapped potential.
