It’s incredibly disappointing that after investing 15 yrs (school) + 3 yrs (bachelors) + 2 yrs (masters) + 2 yrs (M.Phil) on top of all this over 2 years of work experience, a clinical psychologist’s salary caps at just 40,000 and a psychologist at a mere 25,000. It’s a disgrace. The investment just for graduation and above cumulatively on an average cost about 9-10 Lakhs easily (just the tuition fees, forget food & accomodation if youre not a native student). Meanwhile, there are jobs available right after class 12, such as cabin crew or hoteliers, and even entry-level positions at Amazon, start at 60,000 and 40,000 respectively. How can we expect to produce quality psychologists in India under these conditions? What about the rampant workplace politics and the impact of reservations? Is anyone addressing these issues? And then we wonder why talent leaves the country. Working as a therapist from a social justice lens in India, often feels like navigating a complex maze. Many clients carry deep distress over issues that are deeply woven into the fabric of society: casteism, communal violence, misogyny, religious intolerance, and systemic inequities. These injustices surround them in their communities, homes, workplaces, and online spaces, making it feel impossible to escape. For many, the pain of watching people around them remain indifferent—or even openly support harmful ideologies—adds another layer of isolation. In a context where these issues are pervasive and relentless, even the most resilient clients can feel overwhelmed, wondering how to move forward in a society where change often feels so far out of reach. I often find myself wondering how best to support clients who feel so stuck and dysregulated that traditional tools for self-regulation just don’t seem to help. When stressors are systemic and unyielding, simple grounding techniques may feel like a band-aid on a much deeper wound. So I wonder: do we focus on helping clients build emotional resilience through regulation, or do we go deeper, working to understand the parts of themselves that might choose to remain stuck in feelings of helplessness as a form of protection? It’s a delicate balance. On one hand, regulation techniques can provide clients with a sense of control and stability, giving them immediate relief from intense emotions. But if regulation alone feels like bypassing their deeper pain, it may be more supportive to explore the reasons why certain parts of them feel they have to stay in that hopelessness, holding onto it as a necessary acknowledgment of their reality. In these cases, therapy becomes about validating hopelessness and acknowledging it as a meaningful, albeit painful, response to systemic oppression. We might explore what helplessness is protecting them from, how it serves them, and if there are ways to nurture hope alongside grief and anger without undermining their experiences. It’s a tricky place to be as a therapist, constantly navigating between supporting resilience and honoring the parts that resist regulation, that refuse to 'move on' from a broken system. But ultimately, our role is to help clients feel seen, to validate the ways they cope, and to empower them to find personal strength in ways that align with their values, no matter how limited the external control might be. #SocialJusticeTherapy #DecolonizingTherapy #HoldingSpace #SystemicTrauma

Putting out some scattered thoughts after reading (and loving) Pulkit Sharma ‘s post on psychoanalysis in India: 1. The inaccessibility of knowledge happens with almost every niche at one point or the other, but there is an “aura” attached to psychoanalysis as a cult-like cool way of thinking/being right now. This perception comes from (in my opinion) the chaotic nature of the work. It seems trendy these days to be interested in psychoanalysis because it’s “different.” 2. The access to psychoanalytic spaces is very dependent on access to our own inner world, to become a psychoanalyst you need to do extensive personal analysis: it is one of the most important pillars of the training. But the limited availability of psychoanalysts in India (due to unavailable trainings and 10 other reasons) along with the EXPENSIVE 3 sessions/week model makes this a barrier for so many of us. The ones who can afford to have the time/money and space for deep personal work have to come from privileged backgrounds because who else can afford this. 3. Mixing the interest and lack of resources has led to so many new avenues like independent reading groups, supervisions, discussion groups etc and one might argue that this is a great way to make psychoanalysis accessible. Which it mostly is, but is psychoanalytic work just theoretical? 4. If you are someone who is interested in psychoanalysis, maybe one of the best ways to hone that interest is to INVEST in it. And not necessarily financially. Read, create democratic and equitable discussion groups (without charging money), read more, find a good therapist for yourself, watch videos available online. 5. Accessibility is not limited to money, accessibility is also language and adaptability. It’s also desire to create and share knowledge. It’s also breaking the myth of a “niche, cool” school of thought. Accessibility is something that we have the potential to create and it can happen when we challenge the existing systems of thought. Allow yourself to find YOUR own voice. Take time with it. 6. No supervisor, person, psychoanalyst, psychoanalytic psychotherapist or ANY external body/entity/person can replace the inner work required to engage with psychoanalysis.

Clinical Psychology v/s Counseling Psychology 1. Populations catered - Clinical Psychologists are expert in population that is Ill and Counseling Psychologists are working with the population that neither ill not thriving (people at risk for developing more serious Psychiatric Illnesses). 2. Qualifications - Clinical Psychologist in India has done MPhil/PGDCP/PsyD in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychologist has done a minimum of Master's in Clinical/Counseling Psychology. 3. Methodology used - Clinical Psychologists are trained in Psychometric Assessments, Formulation of Diagnosis,& Theraputic Interventions. Counselling Psychologists are trained in Counseling,they use the same Theraputic techniques but with different populations. 4. Hierarchy - There is an unsaid Hierarchy being put forth by the system,where at the top of it are Psychiatrists then Clinical Psychologists,and then Counseling+other Specializations. ***However, we need to understand that both are specialists in different areas of work,both are working to alleviate Mental Health struggles of different intensities. 5. Registration Bodies - There is no "Licensure" there is registration with Rehabilitation Counsel of India for Clinical Psychologists and for Counseling Psychologists there is a lot of confusion with regards to registration(the processes have started as government is also aware of the confusion & unethical/unqualified people taking advantage of lack of registration). FAQs by new Counseling Psychologists - 👉 Will I actually get clients without RCI registration? Absolutely,Yes ! 👉 How can I start practicing? Casual use of word "Ethics" to make Psychologists be compliant of anything and everything ! This is the lastest thing and it is quite irritating. Some examples - 1. If someone writes something pushy or offensive on my DMs and I chose to say I won't speak further people start asking "aren't you a therapist", "isn't it unethical to judge someone so quickly. 2. I recently made a post on my qualms with sub par "Psychology Classes" and mentioned an example of my professor as someone excellent,who's work I have seen & admired since a really long time so I was called "unethical". 3. When someone comments non sensical things on my IG posts and I call them out, they start saying I am "unethical". I want to say this - "Everything that I do that you don't agree with, doesn't automatically become unethical." Being a Psychologist doesn't mean we aren't humans with opinions on what we consider wrong, it does not mean we owe idealistic behavior to demanding/abusive strangers, and it certainly does not mean we will back down from speaking our honest opinions on Institutions that are based on looting innocent Psychology Freshers. When it comes to our clients,we will maintain the highest ethical standards but we aren't going to allow random people to control our voice who are misconstruing what ethics mean. #psychologist #psychologyfresher

My two cents on RCI’s recent notification to regulate the profession of counselling psychology in India: A professional training in CLINICAL Psychology at an undergraduate level, under the nomenclature “B.Sc. CLINICAL Psychology (Hons.)”, to be taught largely by CLINICAL psychologists, prepares graduates to register as COUNSELLING Psychologists ?!?!? Moving away from the holistic approach of a biopsychosocial model, allowing students only with a science background to pursue the profession perhaps reduces the application of psychology to a medical, problem-focused and deterministic focus. Furthermore, RCI quite conveniently introduces NEP 2020 on the very first page of its notification and then goes on to discuss the introduction of this new program in line with NEP 2020’s recommendations to have more professional undergraduate courses. Does it overlook the part where NEP 2020 also recommends “no hard separations between arts and sciences” so students can flexibly “choose their learning trajectories” and also “to eliminate harmful hierarchies between different areas of learning”? If students were to choose subjects of their choice instead of a particular stream during high school, who exactly qualifies as coming from a science stream or equivalent? And more importantly: Who exactly were on the panel that structured this program and prepared the guidelines to regulate this profession?

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘃𝘀 𝗥𝗖𝗜 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲 The recent blunder by the Rehabilitation Council of India in awarding a license to Counselling Psychologists after a 4 year undergraduate degree is not only laughable, it is offensive to all the Counselling Psychologists contributing to the current MHP workforce. I'm a RCI licensed Clinical Psychologist and when I founded my company The Emotional Wellness Initiatives in 2020, a majority of my team was made up of Counselling Psychologists. That holds true today, 4 years later, as well. And I intend to keep it that way in the future. The purpose of my post today is not to undermine the work Clinical Psychologists do (I am one too, after all!). It is to highlight what Counselling Psychologists do and I think more Clinical Psychologists need to speak up about the role of Counselling Psychologists to enhance the parity in the field. So here are my reasons why I love to work with Counselling Psychologists: ✅They are not boxed-in by "diagnosis" ✅They have a natural knack to look at clients in their entirety than a cluster of symptoms ✅They are able to work as efficiently without a formal diagnosis, as with one ✅They are more open minded about trying newer approaches in therapy ✅They are less apprehensive about taking experimental chances in therapy ✅They have limitless potential to expand their expertise due to the openness of their role I have even had the pleasure of working with some fantastic second-career Counselling Psychologists. Yes, they finished their Masters through correspondence but I saw a spark in them and a very strong natural knack to make it as a good therapist. I gave them chances in my company and have watched them blossom into amazingly effective therapists. So restricting the Counselling Psychologist licensing degree to science students and awarding the license after 4 years of undergraduate degree is an insult to the entire crop of Counselling Psychologists in the field today - to their immense contribution to mental health and to their efforts invested in becoming a better therapist every day. 𝗜 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮 and I will always have respect for the career track they have followed through the BA + MA + additional training pattern. RCI needs to come up with a licensing qualification AFTER the BA + MA track, instead of introducing another form of elitism by restricting it to science students. I urge all Clinical Psychologists to speak up for the Counselling Psychologists and stand by our colleagues. 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 '𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧' 𝙛𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩. 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙨 '𝙤𝙪𝙧' 𝙛𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩.
