MEDIA/ PR LESSONS TECH BRANDS CAN TAKE FROM THE INDIAN ELECTIONS: The media is your way to access the media’s consumer. Your audience is not the media but those who read or follow it. The media’s effectiveness depends on how much its consumer believes what appears in it. If the media is perceived as corrupt or sold out, it loses value as its consumers are unlikely to believe in it. When you start corrupting/ buying out the media, it starts saying what YOU want rather than what its consumer needs to know. It loses credibility. A sold out media ignores its consumer, the very people you are trying to reach through it. You also get used to having your own opinion treated as the truth. This makes you less responsive to those who point out when you are wrong. A culture of mutual sycophancy sets in. So, you end up paying people to carry what you say and they carry it because of the money/gifts/ favours/devices you give them. But what you are saying has no value to the consumers you are targeting, because you yourself have eroded the credibility of the media. The loss of credibility of some media leads to the growth of alternate media, which often thrives on simply criticising everything you do. This is seen as credible because hey, everyone who praises you is seen as having sold out. At the end of it all, you spend a truckload of money trying to reach a media’s audience but are unable to get your message across because the media itself has been damaged. What’s more, your strategy has led to the growth of a collection of loud critics, which you cannot control. The solution: 1. Never forget that your target is not the media or the media person, but their audience. A happy media house or media person counts for nothing if their audience don’t believe what they say. 2. Never do anything to compromise the media’s credibility. 3. Recognise that media coverage is not synonymous with “positive coverage.” Even critical coverage can have its plus points. In fact, how you handle your critics is a better measure of your ability than how you handle those who praise you. Anyone can handle their own fans! 4. Keep an eye on not just what the media are saying but its impact on its audience. Remember: the media’s audience is your target, not the media itself. A glowing positive story is of no use if it does not get across to the audience or is not believed by it. 5. Build strong relationships which do not compromise credibility of either party. Remember that when you corrupt someone you can converse with, you are sowing seeds for the emergence of someone who will rebel and won’t speak with you. Finally, recognise that if someone is asking you for money to mislead his or her audience about you or your competitors, they will take money from your competitors for exactly the same. Many a times I have come across blogs mentioning how PR professionals behave like a BPO. They reach out to journalists with irrelevant pitches and story angles. We get suggestions to do background research, read about stories done in the past, etc. which is true and that’s how media outreach should be done. But what about reaching out to a journalist with the most relevant story angle based on regularly following their day – to-day stories, making relevant pitches and then reaching out to them. As a PR professional, one of the most exhilarating moments is when a journalist shows genuine interest in your client’s story. The initial conversation often brims with enthusiasm. You’ve pitched a compelling narrative, and on the other end of the line, the journalist is engaged, asking insightful questions and even brainstorming potential angles. It feels like a home run – the story is practically writing itself in your mind. But then, the unexpected happens. The moment you disconnect the call, the once-vibrant communication pipeline goes silent. Follow-up emails remain unanswered, phone calls go straight to voicemail, and the promising lead begins to feel like a distant memory. This phenomenon, often referred to as “ghosting,” can be frustrating and bewildering. On the face ‘NO’ or a ‘NO’ with a reasoning is much better than engaging in a conversation and then ghosting. PR and Journalism are interlinked. It’s a two-way process. PR professionals need journalists to file stories for their clients, but journalists also need PR professionals to complete their stories. We should respect each other’s time.

Is Nykaa's Ganji Chudail collab pushing cringe too far into brand strategy? Or is it pop culture genius? As an avid consumer of cringe content—whether it’s “baingan”, Ajay Devgan look-alikes, or our beloved nibba-nibbi videos—I thought I’d seen it all. But when *Ganji Chudail* herself teamed up with Nykaa, it left even a cringe aficionado like me wondering: where’s the line between clever marketing and sheer frivolity? Don’t get me wrong—the campaign had me laughing out loud for a few seconds (because who doesn’t love a bald-headed chudail winning the alpha male’s attention after a three-step Nykaa haircare routine?). But in the grander scheme of brand strategy, does this align with Nykaa’s narrative of beauty and empowerment? It’s like your favorite fine dining restaurant suddenly serving up a fusion of caviar-topped Maggi. Sure, it’s a conversation starter, and you might try it out of curiosity, but does it really fit with the brand’s carefully crafted image? This isn’t the first time Ganji Chudail has cast her spell. Netflix’s Murder Mubarak did it too, and it made sense: a fleeting, buzz-worthy collab that piqued curiosity and drove audiences to their couches. But Nykaa isn’t a one-week wonder. The brand’s essence lies in long-term trust, beauty, and empowerment, not in transient trends. Cringe content thrives on shock value, and yes, it’s amazing for quick engagement. But let’s not forget, it’s called cringe for a reason—it’s fleeting and often leaves a brand's core identity a bit, well, bald. Nykaa’s creative audacity deserves applause, but as a PR professional, I’d caution against falling too deeply under Ganji Chudail’s spell. There’s a thin line between riding the pop culture wave and getting lost in the tide of temporary trends. What’s your take?
