What is courage? “Courage is not the absence of #fear” Courage is taking action despite fear or #uncertainty, not the lack of those emotions. In the corporate life, few examples of courage are - 1. Taking #Calculated_Risks • A manager might fear failure when proposing a bold, innovative project that challenges the status quo. Despite this fear, they move forward, presenting their case to leadership. Success or failure, their courage lies in prioritizing #innovation over the comfort of routine. 2. Navigating Difficult Conversations • Providing constructive feedback or addressing underperformance in a team can be uncomfortable. For instance, a leader might hesitate to confront a high-performing but toxic team member. Courage is reflected when they have the conversation, prioritizing team #harmony over personal discomfort. 3. Embracing Change • Corporate transformations like mergers, technological overhauls, or role shifts can create fear of the unknown. An employee showing courage would actively participate, learning new skills or adapting, despite internal reservations. 4. Standing Alone • In a meeting, a lone employee might disagree with the majority’s perspective, fearing #judgment or isolation. Courage is shown when they voice their opinion with professionalism, believing in the value of their insight. 5. Dealing with Public Failures • A #leader whose project fails in the public eye might fear loss of credibility. However, acknowledging #mistakes, learning from them, and transparently communicating their plan to move forward exemplifies courage. The Most Difficult Word: "Sorry" I had quickly parked my two-wheeler in the designated area, planning to grab something from a nearby shop and be back within minutes. However, upon my return, I was greeted by an unpleasant surprise: a four-wheeler had been parked right in front of my bike, completely blocking my way out. I peered into the car, hoping to find the driver sitting inside, but no such luck. The car was empty, and a quick scan of the surroundings revealed no one who seemed to be the owner. Feeling frustrated and helpless, I had no choice but to wait for the driver to return. After what felt like an eternity but was actually just about three minutes, a gentleman finally appeared, who was quickly trying to get into the car. I approached him, trying to convey my frustration and explain how his careless parking had trapped my two-wheeler. Yet, he remained indifferent, ignoring my presence entirely and drove away without a hint of acknowledgment, let alone an apology. Later, I shared this incident with a friend. He listened intently before offering his perspective. "People behave this way because of their inflated egos and insensitivity, often stemming from their power, money, and social position," he said. "For them, saying ‘sorry’ is the most difficult word. However, if you were a traffic constable, they would have apologized multiple times out of fear. Such people only understand the language of authority and fear." His words made me ponder. Was his assessment accurate? Was it true that some people found it easier to dismiss others due to their perceived superiority and only acted respectfully when faced with authority? The experience certainly highlighted a disheartening aspect of human behavior – the difficulty some have in admitting their mistakes and extending a simple apology. Does it happen quite frequently in the corporate world too? In a world where empathy and respect are fundamental to our interactions, the ability to say "sorry" should come naturally. Yet, for many, it remains one of the hardest words to utter. Perhaps it's because an apology signifies vulnerability, an admission of wrongdoing, and a lowering of one’s defenses. But in reality, it is a sign of strength, humility, and respect for others. Do you agree with my friend's perspective, or do you see it differently?
