There are over ~150,000 product managers in India today, and this number is doubling annually. Many of these PMs, including me, follow PM leaders/influencers, listen to podcasts, read blogs, and immerse themselves in frameworks to upskill and create better products. If these frameworks were implemented effectively, India could produce world-class products like Instagram, Notion, and Amazon- potentially surpassing Silicon Valley's legacy. But there are a few challenges: - Frameworks and principles are great reads, but their real power lies in application. - Successful implementation requires adaptation, experimentation, and countless iterations. - Most importantly, it should be tweaked to various leadership styles and Org. structure. The path to creating a “killer product” is not just in knowing the rules- it’s in knowing when to break them.

When you say your product has Product Market Fit, it means your product has achieved PMF for specific segments of users, not everyone which you consider as your potential user. PMF is always segment specific, it is never generic. So next time you want to grow your product, understand which set of customers loved your product initially and find similar customers who have similar needs.

Your true growth as a Product Manager is least reflected in your increasing paycheck. The real win is elsewhere. For meaningful PM career growth, here is what you need to internalise : Your PM compensation growth is the lagging indicator of : The 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 you are having in your current role and impact you previously had. You might think that scope and levelling are also key inputs to compensation, but that's not the case. Here is why: Your performance will be largely judged by the impact you are having in your current role. Above-expectations impact will automatically increase your scope and comp faster than your peers and with time your levelling will also grow via promotions. Hence impact is most important input. Given the importance, here is how to think about impact as a PM : 1. Drive extreme clarity about where do problems exist and where do most impactful opportunities lie so that people understand and believe in the investment. 2. Drive clarity on what the team should focus on with right prioritization and sequencing. 3. Deliver and validate the impact via strong execution - Making progress quickly on the short/mid/long term goals repeatedly, builds your reputation as a PM. As you grow senior your focus shifts from questions like "is it right problem to solve" to questions like "are we investing in the right place, is this area, is this team, is this org the right investment?" etc. #pmcareer #productmanagement

PM Overload: Why India’s Product Managers Are Facing an Identity Crisis . . India's tech landscape is buzzing with an influx of aspiring Product Managers (PMs). But with abundance comes competition, and with competition, the inevitable rise of shortcuts and quick-fix courses. The question is: Are PMs in India at risk of becoming the next wave of digital marketers—plentiful but diluted in quality? The numbers game: (Src: Edureka, Payscale) Associate Product Managers (APMs): 30,000 - 50,000 Product Managers: 100,000 - 120,000 Senior Product Managers: 30,000 - 40,000 Group Product Managers: 8,000 - 10,000 With over 150,000 active and aspiring PMs across various levels, the competition is fierce. This isn’t just a battle for jobs; it’s a race to stand out in a sea of resumes. The rise in numbers isn’t surprising, given the multitude of industries now embracing product management roles. From technology and e-commerce to healthcare and manufacturing, companies are hiring PMs to steer their product strategy. Companies in the Game (Source: foundit India): Technology (Software, IT Services, Fintech): 1,500 - 2,000 companies E-commerce & Retail: 400 - 600 companies Banking & Financial Services: 300 - 500 companies Manufacturing & Industry: 200 - 300 companies Healthcare & Pharmaceuticals: 100 - 200 companies But here’s where it gets tricky. With so many opportunities, the demand for quick certifications and crash courses has surged, leading to a proliferation of product management programs. There are currently around 120 to 130 courses available across India, catering to the aspiring PM crowd (Source - upGrad KnowledgeHut, PremierAgile) But here's the catch: Not all PM courses are created equal. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of PM Courses Not all PM courses are created equal. While some programs provide in-depth knowledge and real-world experience, others might be little more than glorified PowerPoint presentations. Aspiring PMs need to tread carefully—choosing the wrong course could mean wasting time, money, and ultimately, stalling their career progression. The abundance of PMs in India is both an opportunity and a challenge. As the competition heats up, so does the pressure to be better, faster, and more qualified. But in this race, it’s essential not to lose sight of what truly matters—gaining real skills and experience that go beyond certifications. The approximate number of aspiring Product Managers in India is around 30,000-50,000, with many individuals enrolled in APM programs and transitioning from other fields. Most intro to tech for product managers - let's talk APIs, what about its very close cousin SDKs? :) Every one seems to have memorized the restaurant and butler example for APIs. If SDKs sound like an out of syllabus question.. let's set it right. What is an API - well the most simplistic but clear explanation is it is a URL/endpoint that gives you raw data that you can munge as per your requirement. What is an SDK then? - SDK stands for software development kit, basically an SDK is a packaged piece of code for a particular platform to enable a certain functionality - For eg. you will have different SDKs - a Javascript SDK for web, an Android SDK for Android platform, so on. At this point you are like Anurag not getting this at all, what the f*** are you trying to convey. Let's take a concrete example - let's talk Facebook login So, let's say you are trying to enable Facebook login on your website and your Android/iOS app Now, Facebook offers different SDKs to enable Facebook login for different platforms, so like I said earlier a Javascript SDK for web, Android for Android apps, iOS for iOS Apps. Eg. FB SDK for Android https://lnkd.in/gtnCn_BT What it does is allows the Android developer to quickly get up and running, doesn't have to worry about many details - eg. how should I create user screens for FB login, the SDK comes with pre-built login button Don't have to worry about writing code for hitting FB server with user credentials & receive the access token, manage token still live etc, the SDK provides you this pre-built functionality which you just use. Think of it like boilerplate/starter code that FB has provided for your specific platform to make your life easy. Ok let's talk API now, well I can always say that hey I don't want to use the SDK & I want to implement the same via APIs Remember API involves hitting URLs so here is how you would hit FB servers to invoke the login dialog through the raw API https: //www.facebook. com/v18.0/ dialog/oauth? &redirect_uri={"https: //www.domain.com/login"} &state={"{st=state123abc,ds=123456789}"} GET the access token GET https:// graph.facebook. com/v18.0/oauth/access_token? &redirect_uri={redirect-uri} &client_secret={app-secret} &code={code-parameter} This approach will work on any platform because you are just hitting URLs and managing the response. Now when would you use an API & when would you use an SDK. Well sometimes your hand is forced, for eg. let's say FB doesn't offer an SDK for building apps on Windows platform - well your hand is forced you have to use the API. Sometimes you want to keep size hit to a min an SDK can often be big, use an API, sometimes you want to build functionality server side, eg. get ads from multiple sources server side and then pass the best ad to your website, use API, in most other cases use SDK. Product management is like the Indian Lok Sabha elections: 1. Managing stakeholders to please a coalition of parties with conflicting agendas. 2. Presenting a backlog of issues to get more funding. 3. ⁠No matter how well you plan, an unexpected political scandal awaits to knock off your strategy. 4. ⁠Endless meetings and negotiations, with slightly fewer handshakes and more presentations. 5.
