This book talks about how the product itself drives customer acquisition, retention, and expansion. It allows users to experience the product’s value firsthand before making a purchase. Examples of Successful PLG Companies are Grammarly, Slack, Dropbox.... Market dynamics and consumer behavior have changed. Consumers now expect to use software and extract value from it before buying. Trying a product is and always will be an essential part of the buying process. ✨ Do You Actually Need to Be a User to Become a Great Product Manager? ✨ As a product manager, I often hear, "To build great products, you must be the user." While this seems logical on the surface, is it a necessary requirement? Let’s take an example from the movie Padman 📽 . Arunachalam Muruganantham, the real-life hero behind the story, didn’t start out with a deep personal experience of menstrual hygiene challenges. But his empathy, curiosity, and dedication to solving a problem he didn’t directly face helped millions of women in rural India gain access to affordable sanitary products. Muruganantham’s brilliance as a “product manager” didn’t stem from being a user himself, but from being deeply empathetic to the user’s struggles. He went the extra mile — putting himself in uncomfortable situations, even testing prototypes on himself — to understand the real pain points. His success lay not in his experience as a user, but in his relentless empathy, curiosity, and commitment to a solution. In my own journey as a product manager, I’ve realized the same. While I may not always be the direct user of every product I work on, I’ve learned that you don’t have to walk in the user’s shoes 👞 ; you just need to care deeply about where those shoes take them. For instance, when I worked on an AI-driven medication 💊 adherence tracking app, I wasn’t the target user. But I knew that elderly patients and caregivers needed more than just medication reminders 🎗 . They needed something personal, reliable, and effortless. I started by having conversations with my own grandparents 🧓 and family friends, many of whom were juggling multiple medications and health conditions. I then spent hours conducting interviews with other elderly patients and caregivers, truly listening to their stories and struggles. Their voices echoed the concerns of my own loved ones ❤️ , and that’s what fueled my drive to build something meaningful. Their challenges became the heartbeat of the product, and every piece of feedback helped shape a solution that wasn’t just functional but truly helpful. The heart of product management is problem-solving. Whether or not you’re the user yourself, if you can immerse yourself in their world, understand their challenges, and design solutions that make their lives easier, you're doing the job well. When we aimed for the BIRAC BIG grant, we had little idea about the process, as it was a startup grant rather than a research grant. We worked diligently to prepare the proposal, focusing on product development and spinning off a business. In our first attempt (BIG18 call), our proposal fell just short of the cutoff marks set by the online review panel. For our second attempt (BIG19 call), we refined the proposal based on the review comments, emphasizing technology development with a more comprehensive plan. We included proof of concept (PoC) results and a clear technology development layout. The mentoring sessions provided by KIIT TBI for the 18th call were invaluable. This time, we surpassed the cutoff score and were recommended for the final TEP. A 30-day rigorous mentoring session by the KIIT TBI incubation centre greatly helped us prepare for the final pitch presentation. However, we did not make the final cut in the TEP to secure the prestigious grant. Undeterred by the previous failed attempts, we applied again for the 20th call, making the necessary refinements based on the TEP recommendations and our previous experiences. This time, we were better prepared and scored high marks in the online review. We followed the same procedure as per the mentorship given by KIIT TBI. Our pitch deck and its content were significantly improved, and our TEP went as expected, resulting in our recommendation for funding. This experience and the knowledge gained were immensely helpful when I applied for BIG23 as the PI of the proposal. I was better prepared for each step of the evaluation process. The result was astonishing!!!! Our project proposal was recommended for the prestigious funding in the first attempt. I am sharing this experience to help others aiming for the BIG grant. My notes from Sharad Sharma of ProductNation/iSPIRT on the Neon podcast: 1/ iSPIRT is dedicated to making India a product nation. They operate with a 30-year time horizon and are not focused on profits. 2/ When UPI was launched, major banks like SBI and HDFC initially resisted. Normally, RBI would have given in to the demands of the biggest banks, but a governor like Dr. Raghuram Rajan pushed through, ensuring widespread adoption. Policymakers like him help turn big visions into reality at a national scale. 3/ Product companies generate significantly more revenue than service companies. For example, Boeing or Airbus make more revenue than five airlines combined. Similarly, Cisco or Juniper Networks outpaces the revenue of operators like Jio and Airtel. 4/ Innovation in product companies is fundamentally different from that in service companies. 5/ It’s notable that France is in the G-20 but not Spain, even though both are similar in size. This is because we buy high-value products like aircraft from Airbus and Rafale jets from Dassault in France, but only olive oil from Spain. 6/ China is showing early signs of pivoting from a service economy to a product economy—product-focused work is high-leverage and generates higher revenue. This shift could help economies avoid the middle-income trap and move toward greater wealth. 7/ This is the era of "philosopher CEOs"—leaders who think from first principles and are driven by mission rather than profit alone. 8/ We must unlearn traditional business rules. Many product companies follow an S-curve growth model, requiring adaptability. Most tech companies experience S-curve inflexions, and entrepreneurs or VCs who wait for data often miss out. 9/ When John Collison met the early iSPIRT team, he read every publication on UPI—even though he had no vested interest in India or UPI at the time. This kind of curiosity builds early conviction rather than market data. 10/ Don’t settle for the bare minimum; aim for the highest NPS. Many Indian businesses with a traditional mindset aim for minimum NPS, but great companies don’t operate this way. A first mover like Flipkart lost to Amazon largely because Jeff Bezos consistently prioritized NPS. 11/ The earlier brain drain is now benefiting India, with many skilled individuals returning. What's the untold story of pediatric healthcare in India? The gaps are not where you might think! Here's what I discovered: → Pediatricians (like other doctors) are concentrated in urban areas, while the majority population resides in Tier 2/3 cities and rural areas. → Parents often miss their children's vaccinations due to a lack of awareness, reminders, or tracking tools. → Myopia, sleep apnea, ASD and other disorders in kids go unnoticed and untreated due to low awareness. → Technology can help doctors provide personalized education and engage parents, even with limited f-2-f time per patient but this is not considered or not available. → AI can automate tasks like personalized engagement, education and awareness leading to medicine and treatment continuity apart from basic appointment booking, vitals recording etc. But it is non-existent. → Healthcare setups rely on perception built over time rather than the data-driven analytics - be it growth, operations or clinical outcomes. 26 My Learnings from today's read There's a quote from the movie _The fault in our stars_ which I've mentioned in my book, _Silently Noisy_ (that I've tweaked a bit) Here goes.. You don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world, but you definitely have a say in who hurts you and how you react to situations; and I like my choices My Learnings from Chapter 25 of Silently Noisy I have come a long way in what I've been and what I have become. However, being always happy is a choice I make every single day. I have my lows, and because I have dived deeper into introspection, I know how to bounce back. And, I will every single time. Life has ways to challenge you. There's no one way that it tests because it knows our strengths. The only way to navigate is to face everything headon. You'd be surprised at how beautifully we are capable of pulling through each situation. Sometimes, I do see this world as a third person. When this happens, I have questions that I internalize and get my own answers. I guess everyone has their way of looking at things, I certainly do. 😊 My Learnings from outside of reading There are days when everything makes sense. And while we're going through days where nothing is, wait for the answers. Grateful 🙏🏼

Building on Saahil's post from this morning, where he shared insights on why people buy a product or service, I started thinking: what would the response be for teaching? Why should someone choose to be a teacher? Using his template, I jotted down some quick thoughts. While these are just initial ideas, I believe they make a strong case for why we need more teachers, better teachers, and truly amazing ones.
