Caritas India has launched Global Programme’s balanced diet campaign in schools to tackle some of Odisha’s highest malnourishment rates among young children. Among the tribal-dominated districts, 39.8 per cent of children under five years are suffering from malnutrition in Rayagada. The percentage increase has also been seen in severely wasted cases among children under the age of five. #Big Boost for India's Agriculture Sector # In a major move, the Union Cabinet, led by PM @narendramodi, has approved the rationalization of all Centrally Sponsored Schemes under the Ministry of Agriculture into two umbrella programs: 1. Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (PM-RKVY): Focused on promoting sustainable agriculture, this scheme will empower farmers through key initiatives like Soil Health Management, Rainfed Area Development, Agro Forestry, and support for agri-startups. 2. Krishonnati Yojana (KY): Targeting food security and agricultural self-sufficiency, this scheme will tackle emerging challenges like climate resilience, nutrition security, and value chain development. With a total budget of ₹1,01,321.61 crore, the central and state governments are working together to bring long-term growth. One big advantage states can now reallocate funds between components to meet their region-specific needs, ensuring maximum flexibility and effectiveness in addressing agricultural challenges. New for the North Eastern Region   The Mission Organic Value Chain Development (MOVCDNER) is being modified to include a Detailed Project Report (DPR), providing even more flexibility for tackling local issues and boosting agricultural productivity in the North East. Probably a leading example of a government-led poverty graduation programme in the world - the National Rural Livelihoods Mission of the Government of India. This is from the State of Bihar Rural Livelihoods Mission: "Poverty and despair have long defined the lives of thousands of women in Bihar’s vast countryside. Carrying on the journey on #Bamboo, had a very promising interaction with the officials of #Chempolis, India about their community based Bamboo initiatives in Assam. The need of the hour is to #sustainably help our farmers benefit from the resources that are already available with them. While doing so it is important to be #environmentally #sensible keeping the future in mind. Bamboo is an answer that is right in front of us. The opportunities are there not only in providing access to assured markets but also #empowering the #farmers by giving them larger visibility and easy financial accessibility. There is also a tremendous scope of developing local #Entrepreneurship in the various stages of the entire #value #chain ecosystem.

Empowering communities for safe drinking water access: Harnessing JAS and HWC platforms in Bihar  ‘Clean water and sanitation for all,’ the sixth goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlights the critical necessity of access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation facilities. In the year 2020, approximately 1 in 4 individuals lacked access to safely managed drinking water in their homes, while nearly half of the global population lacked access to safely managed sanitation (UN Water, Joint Monitoring Program for Water Supply Publication - United Nations). In the futuristic perspective of the SDGs, community participation emerges as a viable solution for improving the availability of safe drinking water. This vision is encapsulated in SDG-6.6, b. which emphasizes supporting local engagement in water and sanitation management.   Bihar has recently pioneered a community-driven innovation as a sustainable solution to improve access to safe drinking water. The pilot in Nawada district, engaging 140 sites under 20 Health and Wellness Centres-HWCs (seven sites under each HWC), exemplifies a multi-sectoral partnership between the Department of Health, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), and Jhpiego, aimed at leveraging existing institutional mechanisms such as Jan Arogya Samiti (JAS) and Village Health Sanitation Nutrition Committee (VHSNC) to strengthen community-level decision-making for improved access to safe drinking water. The HWCs are required to administer 14 essential diagnostic tests, among which is water testing for faecal contamination contributing to the accessibility of comprehensive healthcare services. Commencing with district-level stakeholder orientation, the pilot systematically progressed through steps including HWC-level meticulous planning leveraging the platform of JAS, source identification from frequented community places for sample collection, rigorous testing, findings dissemination, community awareness initiatives, the orientation of Community Health Officers (CHOs) of HWCs by PHED on decontamination plans, followed by its implementation through JAS and VHSNC. The CHOs played a pivotal role in all stages of the process, from identification to decontamination, testing, and retesting. The pilot identified 140 water sources for decontamination and successfully decontaminated 37 sites out of the identified sites; however, to fortify the plan, retesting was conducted, revealing one site had become contaminated again, prompting immediate action from PHED. The intervention sets a promising precedent for replication across remaining sites.
