Success??? Here the successful story of biotech company by Reetu Yadav. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, an Indian entrepreneur, founded Biocon, one of the largest biotechnology companies in Asia, despite facing numerous challenges early in her career. Early Life and Education Kiran was passionate about science from an early age and wanted to become a brewmaster, inspired by her father, who was a brewmaster himself. After graduating with a degree in Zoology, she pursued a brewing course in Australia and earned a Master’s degree in Malting and Brewing. Despite this, when she returned to India, she struggled to find a job in the brewing industry as it was male-dominated, and no company was willing to hire a woman for the role. Turning Adversity into Opportunity Kiran could have given up on her dreams, but she instead turned her attention to biotechnology, which was in its infancy in India at the time. In 1978, she founded Biocon in her garage with a small seed investment and a vision to leverage biotechnology to produce enzymes and, later, pharmaceuticals that could benefit society. Challenges and Breakthroughs In the early days, Kiran faced skepticism from banks, clients, and partners. She struggled with infrastructure, funding, and finding skilled employees. Yet, she persevered, investing in research and innovation. One of Biocon’s major breakthroughs was the development of India’s first recombinant insulin, which made life-saving insulin more affordable for diabetic patients. Her determination paid off, and Biocon became a leader in the biotech industry. The company went public in 2004, making Kiran the wealthiest self-made woman in India at that time. Today, Biocon continues to innovate in the field of biotechnology, focusing on affordable healthcare solutions for diseases like cancer, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders. OHT's Dr. Ramanan Laxminarayan spoke on an expert panel discussion on global strategies for defeating antimicrobial resistance with Dame Sally Davies and Anand Anandkumar of Bugworks Research Inc. at the Devex news summit on the sidelines of UNGA 79. In Devex's coverage of the event, Ramanan cites that three things are needed to curb the AMR crisis, "First, there’s a need for stronger infection prevention efforts in low- and middle-income countries, such as clean water and adequate sanitation. "Huonslab Completes IND Submission for Recombinant Human Hyaluronidase Drug Delivery Agent" - "HyDIFFUZE™: Advancing Towards the World's First Biosimilar(Stand-alone) with Ample Competitive Edge" - Huonslab, a subsidiary of Huons Global, is accelerating the development of recombinant human hyaluronidase. Huonslab announced on the 29th that it completed non-clinical toxicity studies on HyDIFFUZE™ (HLB3-002), a recombinant human hyaluronidase currently under development, and applied for an IND to Korea Ministry Food and Drug Safety (Korea MFDS).  Huonslab conducted all essential non-clinical toxicity assessments mandated for the IND through eminent domestic and international Contract Research Organizations (CROs), ensuring safety across all criteria. HyDIFFUZE™, which is being developed by Huonslab, features naturally derived recombinant human hyaluronidase and has the same amino acid sequence as Hylenex®, the hyaluronidase of Halozyme, the original drug. In September of last year, a comparative evaluation was conducted through a domestic CRO organization between MabThera® IV, containing HyDIFFUZE™, and MabThera® SC, the original drug containing Hylenex® administered by subcutaneous injection to animals. The results confirmed the similarity between the two formulations, demonstrating equivalent pharmacokinetics and diffusion efficacy. Chae-young Lim, the executive director of Bio Research at Huonslab, remarked, "Through our non-clinical stdudies, we've established the efficacy and safety of HyDIFFUZE™ .We've completed the manufacturing of drug substance and product for clinical trials, and have submitted an IND application to Korea MFDS. He further noted, "The expiration of the patent for Hylenex®, the original product of Halozyme, in Korea and Europe in March this year, with the U.S. patent set to expire in September 2027, marks a significant milestone." Lim continued “Upon the completion of clinical trials for our proprietary product, HyDIFFUZE™, and subsequent product approval by the end of 2025, we expect to secure sufficient global competitiveness” He added, "HyDIFFUZE™ will be utilized as a product in the fields of dermatology, pain management, and edema treatment. Furthermore, we aim to accelerate the development of subcutaneous drug delivery by leveraging our HyDIFFUZE™ platform as a drug diffusion enhancer, thereby expanding its utility and enhancing convenience." Meanwhile, Huonslab is pioneering the development of the world's first biosimilar (stand-alone) of Hilenex®, a drug diffusion facilitator that enables the conversion of current intravenous injections to subcutaneous injections.

Established in 2004, its BabyCord program is one of the largest cord blood banking programs in the region, with 50,000+ parents preserving newborn stem cells each year and 375,000 units cryopreserved. I had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Mayur Abhaya Srisrimal, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of LifeCell. Mr. Abhaya has led LifeCell since 2008 and been instrumental in expanding its stem cell storage services across India with its BabyCord program. Under his leadership, LifeCell also raised growth capital from Helion Ventures and extended its preventive diagnostic services by launching BabyShield, a program targeted at reducing the infant mortality ratio. LifeCell was founded in 2004, making it India's first private stem cell bank. It remains the largest stem cell bank in the country today. India currently has a population of 1.437 billion people and a fertility rate of 2.4 births per woman. Together, China and India house an astounding one-third of the world's total population. This makes India an absolutely critical cord blood and tissue banking market to watch.
