This is an interesting paper on H5N1 and other mammalian species globally and mammal-to-mammal transmission and caused sporadic human infections. However, whether 2.3.4.4b H5N1 circulating in non-human mammals can establish human infections and spread among humans is unclear. The quantitative assessment indicated that 2.3.4.4b H5N1 circulating in bears, cattle, dolphins, and foxes show higher human adaptive potential than other hosts. Also, H5N1 infections in mammals across time showed a unique set of adaptations in the 2.3.4.4b clade compared to previously circulating strains, especially the acquisition of Q591 adaptation in PB2 that enables human adaptation. Thus, 2.3.4.4b H5N1 acquires human adaptations due to natural selection pressure in non-human mammals. Overall, the study delineates human adaptation and infection risk of specific non-human mammalian circulating HPAI 2.3.4.4b H5N1 strains.

Now more countries such as #Singapore and #Hongkong are mandating testing for ETOs. In last two years, the Spices Board India The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has proactively responded by developing and deploying protocols, onboarding accredited laboratory for testing and fool proofing Indian export with mandatory testing of ETOs. Indian exporters have also adopted preemptive measures, shifted to alternatives and have substantially reduced use of ETO and complying with new MRL norms 0.1 ppm. Similarly New norms of Pyrrolizidine alkaloids #PAs implemented since 1 April 2023 by #EU in #cumin and other high value crops would be counterproductive and derail export in the absence of approved herbicides on high value crops grown in small areas. In the future, the IPM production strictly complying with MRLs of targeted importing countries will be the norm for exportable surplus of high value crops such as spices, fruits and vegetables. #India needs to deploy mega program to educate farmers on IPM aligning with input, aggregators, processors, exporters and value chain industry . Another biggest challenge for farmers is to deal with invasive pests such as #blackthrips in chilli and changing dynamics of sucking pests and disease such as aphids, fusarium wilt and bacterial blight in cumin and other spices which necessitates excessive application of insecticides and fungicides in absence of approved chemicals. Expanding label claims of appropriate insecticides and fungicides or grouping crops/insects/diseases based approvals of chemicals is yet another biggest opportunity for India to ensure quality food production for domestic and international market. 📖 Playbook for Agbiotech Innovators Had an interesting conversation with innovators in the ag biotech space. Here's a gist of the most pressing challenges What's the way to ensure success? How do we up our odds and what are major pitfalls? (Not stating the obvious in the list - pick large globally relevant problems, ensure customer will be willing to pay for the solution etc) ⚗ 1. Innovation mix- Its important to work on multiple levels of innovation. Don't put all your eggs in the "moonshot" basket. Have 1or 2 products that you can commercialize quickly. Being in the market will only increase the odds of success on the "moonshot" product ✅ 2. Regulatory- Understand the regulatory really well, coz it can put a break in your commercialization journey. Have a mix here as well- products with clear regulatory pathway and products that are so novel that regulatory hasn't caught up with it as yet. 🤝 3. Partnerships- Get a commercial partner engagement very early on. They come in with decades of commercialization and market experience. They know what customers want and how to package that well 🛒 4. Know the Difference- Know that technologically successful product is far from a commercially successful product. Be ready to go through the grind of turning a molecule to a block buster product. Understand that requires a significant mind shift. 💰5. Mind the Gap- Plan how will you fund this transition coz there is a big gap in funding between the ideation stage and scale stage. About 75% startups fail to find the means to fund themselves though they have a working prototype. Plan till your first pilot scale manufacturing atleast. ABSTRACT Background: Malnutrition is a global health crisis and Uttarakhand state is no exception. Besides the implementation of various government schemes for eradication of undernutrition is at very slow pace calls for analyzing the present situation and future prospects of food crops. In this regard, Uttarakhand a hilly state with many agricultural constraints needs special attention. Pulses known for rich protein and micronutrient content can serve as an excellent source for mitigating protein deficiency and attaining food and nutrition security. Various pulses in different cropping pattern are being grown in the state. The current study aims at exploring the dynamics, diversification and decomposition of pulses in Uttarakhand and their role in providing food and nutritional security. Methods: Secondary data related to area under pulses, production and yield were taken from official website of Agriculture department, Government of Uttarakhand. The data gaps were filled through linear interpolation. Production of total pulses was linearly extrapolated to estimate pulses production for 2035-36. Growth and instability, diversification and decomposition of pulses were analyzed. The Food and Nutritional security statistics were taken from directorate of Economics and Statistics, Government of Uttarakhand and explored in relation to pulses. Result: It was found that the state is faring well in production of pulses as an increase in absolute area, production, yield and proportion of pulses in gross sown area was observed. High pulse diversification was seen. However, a decline in all major pulse-based cropping systems was seen. Moreover, in the state, where 31% of the population lacks adequate protein intake, there is a pressing need to enhance the availability, accessibility and absorption of protein-rich pulses, particularly for vegetarians. Additionally, it is essential to reevaluate the state’s food and nutrition security status in alignment with the updated guidelines from ICMR-NIN in 2020. Need of the hour at present in Indian agricultural land is Rejuvenation which can be achieved by many practices which are as follows: Rejuvenating degraded soil is essential for sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, and improving biodiversity. The process involves restoring the soil's physical structure, nutrient content, organic matter, and microbial health. Here are effective strategies: 1. **Add Organic Matter** - **Compost:** Apply well-decomposed organic compost to enrich the soil with nutrients and improve its texture. - **Manure:** Use animal manure as a natural fertilizer to enhance nutrient availability. - **Crop Residues:** Leave crop residues on the field to decompose and add organic content. ### 2. **Practice Crop Rotation and Diversity** - Alternate crops with different nutrient requirements and root structures to prevent nutrient depletion and break pest cycles. - Include nitrogen-fixing plants like legumes to replenish soil nitrogen levels. ### 3. **Apply Green Manure and Cover Crops** - Grow cover crops like clover, vetch, or rye to prevent soil erosion, add organic matter, and fix nutrients. - Incorporate green manure into the soil for added fertility. ### 4. **Prevent Soil Erosion** - Use techniques like contour farming, terracing, and strip cropping to reduce water runoff and retain soil. - ### 5. **Reduce Tillage** - Practice no-till or minimum-till farming to maintain soil structure, reduce compaction, and protect microbial life. ### 6. **Amend Soil Chemistry** - Conduct soil testing to identify deficiencies. - Apply lime to correct soil acidity or gypsum to improve soil structure and alleviate compaction. - Use rock phosphate or bone meal to supplement phosphorus. ### 7. **Enhance Soil Microbial Life** - Introduce biofertilizers like mycorrhizal fungi or beneficial bacteria. - Avoid overuse of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, which can harm soil microorganisms. ### 8. **Implement Agroforestry** - Incorporate trees and shrubs with crops to improve soil fertility, reduce erosion, and increase organic matter. ### 9. **Use Mulching** - Cover the soil with organic or inorganic mulch to retain moisture, regulate temperature, and prevent erosion. ### 10. **Improve Water Management** - Implement efficient irrigation systems to prevent overwatering or waterlogging. - Harvest rainwater and use it judiciously for better soil hydration. ### 11. **Apply Vermiculture** - Introduce earthworms to the soil, as they improve aeration, drainage, and nutrient cycling. ### Long-Term Monitoring - Continuously monitor soil health by testing for nutrient levels, pH, and microbial activity. - Adjust management practices based on soil test results and crop needs.
