It’s incredibly disappointing that after investing 15 yrs (school) + 3 yrs (bachelors) + 2 yrs (masters) + 2 yrs (M.Phil) on top of all this over 2 years of work experience, a clinical psychologist’s salary caps at just 40,000 and a psychologist at a mere 25,000. It’s a disgrace. The investment just for graduation and above cumulatively on an average cost about 9-10 Lakhs easily (just the tuition fees, forget food & accomodation if youre not a native student). Meanwhile, there are jobs available right after class 12, such as cabin crew or hoteliers, and even entry-level positions at Amazon, start at 60,000 and 40,000 respectively. How can we expect to produce quality psychologists in India under these conditions? What about the rampant workplace politics and the impact of reservations? Is anyone addressing these issues? And then we wonder why talent leaves the country. Finally, RML has released notifications for teaching positions at various faculty levels! For months, M.Phil Clinical Psychology students career was like "Aasman see gire khajoor pe atke" after NEP, facing the possibility that their course could be discontinued due to reasons like lack of RCI approval or faculty shortages. This new step by RML brings some long-awaited clarity and hope. [How to get the job of Psychologist/Counsellor/Social Worker?] I am not talking about eligibility to be one of these professionals. I am not talking about being registered or accredited with the respective societies. I am not talking about getting the degrees to learn how to be one of the professionals. 𝗦𝗼 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗬 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝗯? (with the assumption that all the applicants have the same required qualifications) In all interviews, the interviewer panellists are often looking for the best candidate who can fill the slot, and be a wonderful fit to the role, team, and culture to the organisation. So the key things to consider are: 1) do you have the knowledge of the industry, or specifically working experience with the specific type of cliente the organisation is looking for? 2) Do you have some X-factors (Xtra abilities and skills) that are pertinent to the job, which may be potential peripheral tasks in the future? In the current job scene, employees often may favour the I-shaped applicants/employees much lesser than other applicants with more varied skills and knowledge, and abilities to apply their skills over different domains. So some general tips for all students: 1. Understand yourself and deeply consider the industry you wish to pursue (e.g. healthcare, education, social services, etc.) 2. Carefully curate your internship and work experiences towards (your ideal position in) the industry. This would indicate to employers that you are serious about the industry, and building your required knowledge and skills towards the role. 3. Be very willing to explore different tasks. Some may view these tasks as irrelevant extra work; however there are definitely skills to be built along the way. Even if you eventually do not like the task, you have gained the skills and knowledge, to reject it in future positions. As for me, I will definitely employ someone with the necessary qualifications, good related experience in and knowledge of the industry, and skills necessary to do the role and more!! ➡️ The current discussions and seeking clarity regarding centralising licensing for all psychologists. ➡️ Why is it important? Here's a real life instance from my practice as a counseling psychologist and a special educator to make people more aware of the 'why. ' ➡️ A few weeks back, a woman in her 30s with a background in psychology and having worked as a surgical nurse in a renowned mental health hospital reached out to me to seek therapy for her mental health concerns. On having gotten onto a 15 minutes discovery call to help her clear her doubts, which inevitably went on for a longer as the woman was in immediate distress. Here's what the woman concluded the call with.. The woman after sharing her concerns and having her doubts cleared asked me if I have cleared my NET exam. After clearing that the NET exam is needed to pursue academics and for PhD entrances, I shared that Masters in Psychology and a considerable amount of practice and supervision makes it eligible for psychologists to practice as counseling psychologist. The woman was still persistent in the end saying she 'thought I had cleared my NET,' and that to share with her if I was doing another one of my mental health based art workshops. ➡️ This instance only shows the amount of false and incorrect information people still hold for psychologists and our authenticity. ➡️ The laypeople will not always be aware of the different pathways a psychologist goes through to practice actively in the mental health field. ➡️ Yet, what would be much more helpful and needed is when one single authentic information is known by all, and that is having a valid centralised license for all psychologists. WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS ON THIS ? As a professional I'm not in favor of RCI decision at all. No I don't agree even on getting recognition of Counselling Psychologist by RCI through this. Reasons which instantly came to my mind - ✔️Depth of Knowledge - Graduation level education may not provide sufficient depth in psychological theories, therapeutic techniques, and ethical considerations required for professional practice. ✔️Clinical Experience - Counseling psychologists deal with complex mental health issues that require practical experience in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning, which is often gained through advanced education and supervised practice. ✔️Risk Management - Inadequate training could lead to potential risks for clients, such as misdiagnosis, inappropriate treatment interventions, or mishandling of sensitive psychological issues. ✔️Ethical Competence - Professional ethics in counseling psychology require a nuanced understanding of confidentiality, boundaries, and ethical dilemmas, which may not be fully grasped at the undergraduate level. ✔️Continued Education - Counseling psychology is a dynamic field that requires ongoing learning and professional development to stay updated with current research, best practices, and emerging therapeutic modalities. ✔️Supervision Requirements - Many jurisdictions mandate supervised practice hours under licensed psychologists or counselors before granting independent practice rights, ensuring competence and safety for clients. ✔️Complex Cases - Graduates may lack exposure to managing complex psychological disorders, crisis intervention, or trauma-informed care, which are crucial skills in counseling psychology. ✔️Multicultural Competence - Effective counseling requires understanding and sensitivity to diverse cultural backgrounds, which necessitates comprehensive training and exposure beyond undergraduate studies. ✔️Interdisciplinary Collaboration - Professionals in counseling psychology often collaborate with psychiatrists, social workers, and other healthcare providers, requiring a broad understanding of interdisciplinary approaches and treatments. ✔️Client Trust and Confidence - Clients place their trust in qualified professionals who have demonstrated competence through advanced education, licensure, and adherence to ethical standards, which are typically achieved beyond graduation-level training. My two cents on RCI’s recent notification to regulate the profession of counselling psychology in India: A professional training in CLINICAL Psychology at an undergraduate level, under the nomenclature “B.Sc. CLINICAL Psychology (Hons.)”, to be taught largely by CLINICAL psychologists, prepares graduates to register as COUNSELLING Psychologists ?!?!? Moving away from the holistic approach of a biopsychosocial model, allowing students only with a science background to pursue the profession perhaps reduces the application of psychology to a medical, problem-focused and deterministic focus. Furthermore, RCI quite conveniently introduces NEP 2020 on the very first page of its notification and then goes on to discuss the introduction of this new program in line with NEP 2020’s recommendations to have more professional undergraduate courses. Does it overlook the part where NEP 2020 also recommends “no hard separations between arts and sciences” so students can flexibly “choose their learning trajectories” and also “to eliminate harmful hierarchies between different areas of learning”? If students were to choose subjects of their choice instead of a particular stream during high school, who exactly qualifies as coming from a science stream or equivalent? And more importantly: Who exactly were on the panel that structured this program and prepared the guidelines to regulate this profession?

Organisations that hire fresher therapists without providing adequate training and supervision can deeply harm therapists. A lot has been written about how undertrained and unsupervised therapists harm clients; but it is not only clients that are emotionally vulnerable in the therapy room. In therapy, therapists can face aggression, disrespect, and violation of boundaries that can damage their morale. Supervision serves as a space for disseminating these experiences technically, and emotionally processing them. One cannot self learn how to navigate difficult therapeutic relationships. Without guidance, therapists may have to face similar situations again and again, without ever learning how to protect themselves. Unfortunately, there is no law that mandates organisations to take responsibility for therapists' emotional safety. #mentalhealth #psychotherapy #counselling #therapist

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘃𝘀 𝗥𝗖𝗜 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲 The recent blunder by the Rehabilitation Council of India in awarding a license to Counselling Psychologists after a 4 year undergraduate degree is not only laughable, it is offensive to all the Counselling Psychologists contributing to the current MHP workforce. I'm a RCI licensed Clinical Psychologist and when I founded my company The Emotional Wellness Initiatives in 2020, a majority of my team was made up of Counselling Psychologists. That holds true today, 4 years later, as well. And I intend to keep it that way in the future. The purpose of my post today is not to undermine the work Clinical Psychologists do (I am one too, after all!). It is to highlight what Counselling Psychologists do and I think more Clinical Psychologists need to speak up about the role of Counselling Psychologists to enhance the parity in the field. So here are my reasons why I love to work with Counselling Psychologists: ✅They are not boxed-in by "diagnosis" ✅They have a natural knack to look at clients in their entirety than a cluster of symptoms ✅They are able to work as efficiently without a formal diagnosis, as with one ✅They are more open minded about trying newer approaches in therapy ✅They are less apprehensive about taking experimental chances in therapy ✅They have limitless potential to expand their expertise due to the openness of their role I have even had the pleasure of working with some fantastic second-career Counselling Psychologists. Yes, they finished their Masters through correspondence but I saw a spark in them and a very strong natural knack to make it as a good therapist. I gave them chances in my company and have watched them blossom into amazingly effective therapists. So restricting the Counselling Psychologist licensing degree to science students and awarding the license after 4 years of undergraduate degree is an insult to the entire crop of Counselling Psychologists in the field today - to their immense contribution to mental health and to their efforts invested in becoming a better therapist every day. 𝗜 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮 and I will always have respect for the career track they have followed through the BA + MA + additional training pattern. RCI needs to come up with a licensing qualification AFTER the BA + MA track, instead of introducing another form of elitism by restricting it to science students.
