Is Management Consulting on the path to decline? 📉 Every time we hear of layoffs at one of the big consulting firms, this might be the first thought that pops up. Let's take a closer look at the Bain India layoffs that happened recently and understand why it happened: As a former Bain manager, the recent layoff of 200+ consultants at Bain India (~15-20% of the consulting workforce) is quite revealing. Here are key lessons I think we can draw from this situation: ▶️ Aggressive Hiring: Bain India doubled its hiring during 2021-2022 to meet high demand but ended up with overcapacity when the market cooled. ▶️ Client Dependency: Almost 40% of Bain India's business came from Tiger Global. When Tiger scaled back, the impact was severe, affecting both due diligence and general consulting work. Tiger's portfolio companies such as Ola, Razorpay scaled back their consulting work. ▶️ Adaptability Challenges: Shifting to non-private equity work required different skills and expertise, leading to delivery challenges even when projects were secured by partners. Reducing workforce allows Bain to align its employee base with current needs and explore other sectors like Public Sector, where BCG and McKinsey already have a significant presence. This situation underscores the importance of balancing growth ambitions with long-term stability in the consulting industry. Since its inception, the consulting industry has navigated numerous disruptions—from evolving client demands for specialized expertise to the integration of digital tools within client environments. The sector has continually adapted and will continue to do so. With the advent of AI and other technological advancements, consulting firms must remain agile and innovative to stay competitive.
