What is Idempotency? . . . Suppose you have an App that has the concept of a wallet, the user can spend coins from the wallet and buy some merchandise from the app. One of your backend services is consuming events from a message broker, this event deducts X coins from user's wallet. After deducting the balance from the wallet, the service is supposed to send the acknowledgement to the message broker that it has consumed the message and the message broker should send the next message. But somehow before sending this acknowledgement, the service crashed. Because of a fancy failover strategy service got restarted and asked the message broker for events to consume. Since the message broker didn't get the acknowledgement at that time, it will send that event again to the consumer service. Okay! So now double the amount of coins has been deducted from consumers. We can say that we executed the same event twice. Ideally after the execution of the first event, all the duplicate events shouldn't have any effect on the system. This Ideal behaviour of the system is called Idempotency. But how to achieve Idempotency? May be in the next post. Here's another update on what we are currently building at InternPulse. We are building a revolutionary product that will help families track and manage finances easily and conveniently. The platform has many features including the creation of sub-accounts for family members and tracking their spending. One of the features I like most and look forward to seeing is the one that helps parents teach their children the best way to save and invest. I like it mostly because it will help instill the generational wealth mindset in such children. I am working with the team that is tasked with the creation and management of APIs for everything account-related and transactions. Currently, I am working on the middleware that will communicate with the user management service to ensure users are authenticated before accessing the Accounts and Transactions APIs. I am learning many things about working in teams, the ups and downs. I'm learning to deal with dependencies while working on my deliverables. Mastering Node.js seemed like scaling a tech giant's fortress to me, and here's why👇🏻 Every tech forum and discussion was abuzz with talk of asynchronous programming in Node.js, and honestly, the concept was daunting. I was convinced it would be an arduous journey of trial and error spread over countless weeks, maybe even years. But, I was mistaken. It happened much quicker than anticipated, all thanks to my Preplaced mentor . With their guidance, I've conquered three pivotal aspects of Node.js that are crucial for backend development in my field: 👉🏼 Express.js for building web applications with robust features and functions. 👉🏼 Asynchronous programming to handle multiple operations simultaneously without bogging down the server. 👉🏼 Working with RESTful APIs for creating scalable and maintainable service-oriented architectures. Tinder, a widely-used dating app with millions of active users globally, employs a microservices framework to accommodate its vast user base. With over 500 backend services communicating with each other, Tinder required a centralized entry point to manage client requests efficiently.  To address this need, Tinder developed its own API Gateway, also known as Tinder Application Gateway (TAG), as existing solutions lacked the necessary features. Built on Spring Cloud Gateway, TAG facilitates easy modification of backend service routes, supports middleware functionalities such as bot detection and schema registry, and enables seamless request/response transformations.  Please read my latest blog on API Gateway to know more about it!

Swiggy used RAG to build its in-house Text-to-SQL -- allowing all employees to make data-driven decisions faster. 📈 Here’s how they built the system end-to-end: Suppose a user types a question in Slack, like "What's the average delivery time in Delhi last week?" The query passes through AWS Lambda, where a function cleans and formats it before sending it to the LLM. The model then checks the Knowledge Base for metadata related to “delivery time”, which includes tables and columns relevant to delivery data. It identifies “average delivery time” as the metric and retrieves relevant historical SQL examples. Using Swiggy-specific metadata, it selects tables like Orders and columns like delivery_time. The model also uses few-shot learning by adding reference queries from similar past requests to guide the SQL generation. Finally the generated SQL query is run on Snowflake, and gets adjusted if errors occur. The final query output is sent back to the user on Slack. Users can rate accuracy, helping refine the model.
