It is indeed a major honor to be recognized as the Chief Data Officer of the Year 🙏. I am humbled to learn that my contributions to the Data Science and Analytics community have been recognised. I was in two minds after completion of my doctoral studies - whether to join academics or venture into the industry. Even then, in the industry should I continue in the field of Chemical Engineering or follow my passion around data and solve business problems - something I learned at Sloan and during my PhD work. I am glad I ventured out into the field of Data Sciences. Data sciences is an ever evolving field. Back in the 1990s the focus was on dimensional modeling to build data warehouses and data marts, and business intelligence. Two decades later we still build similar systems except that now we are dealing with large volumes of data getting generated at high velocity. That is Big Data. Machine learning algorithms developed in the 1980s and 1990s are finding practical relevance now. GenAI is the youngest kid in the block. I believe over time we will find Quantum AI and its ability to handle petabytes of data become a reality. Thanks #StrategINK for this great honor! I was privileged to attend an extremely simple, yet insightful session on leadership by Mr. Vijay Sethi at the CIO&Leader conference as an ITNext100 Future CIO awardee. He shared 5 mantra's which essentially are integral for building the basic character for being a good leader. 1. Have good work ethics 2. Always have a positive attitude. 3. Nurture & inspire our teams 4. Focus on regularly enhancing our knowledge 5. Be a good human being. All of the above is nothing, if the leader does not demonstrate integrity, he said. One thing that resonated with me the most was his statement - "Good leaders do not create followers, they create more good leaders.". This statement brought back memories of my first tryst with formal leadership education when as a beginner in my professional journey I read the book, Good to Great - Jim Collins, where the author talks about Level 5 leadership who channelize their energies to build successors for their organizations. Something which had become a benchmark of my perspective of good leadership ever since. Creating perpetual organizations which transcend individuals. Of course, Mr. Vijay was talking about building good leaders at societal and business community level, which transcends organizations. As Dr. Prashun Dutta shared in his insights, it is our duty to repay the debt to society by contributing back and enabling others to become good leaders. All in all, a memorable and insightful weekend, where stalwarts took us back to first principles. For starters, it is heartening to observe the spark of intellectual leadership within the Indian tech sphere emanating from entrepreneurial visionaries which till now have been coming from the saffron leadership (probably signs of capitalism). Sadly, though the remainder of these startup founders & investors seem to have capitulated their integrity to the omnipotent behemoths of Big Tech. Second, let us appreciate, if not their endeavors, then at the very least the noble intentions of Bhavish Aggarwal and the Ola & Ola Electric team in articulating a visionary manifesto for India. This needs not just government support but significant awareness of era of tech colonialism we are in. Now, to the article and a few of the facts in it below. The thing that I loved the most is dual focus on tech & energy, both needed to transform India's future. #1 Despite our huge success in IT services, it represents just 1% of the $30 trillion global technology industry. #2 The analogy of raw materials export from India only for the final products to be imported is so true even today. #3 The biggest chip company in the US has a market cap more than India's GDP. Still we don't want to invest a few thousand crores in it? #4 The most number of chip developers in the world are Indians. But sadly, we don't have a single Indian-designed chip If we want a different future, we need to act today and we have to work hard in our present.
