Last week, while traveling through South Asia, I captured this photo of an auto rickshaw winding through the chaotic streets. It immediately brought back memories of my childhood in Calcutta, where these three-wheeled vehicles were more than just transportation—they were part of the rhythm of everyday life. For anyone who hasn’t experienced it, auto rickshaws are the backbone of cities like Bangalore and Mumbai. They glide through narrow streets, ferrying countless people every day. It’s such a contrast to the U.S., where our roads and infrastructure are designed for cars and buses. Over there, these nimble little autos thrive in a world that demands flexibility. Growing up in Calcutta, hopping on an auto wasn’t just about getting from point A to B. Each ride offered a snapshot of life around me—quick conversations with the driver, watching families pack in, and seeing the city’s daily hustle unfold. It was a reminder that resilience and adaptability were woven into the fabric of life. Now, back home in Virginia, I look at this image and reflect on what these small, everyday experiences taught me: ADAPTABILITY: Just as these rickshaws navigate winding streets, we too have to find our way through life’s uncertainties. Whether it’s in our careers or personal lives, being adaptable has helped me move forward, even when the road wasn’t clear. INCLUSIVITY: Auto rickshaws don’t discriminate—students, workers, families, anyone can hop in. It’s a reminder that our workplaces should be like that too: open and accessible to everyone, valuing all perspectives. SUSTAINABILITY: With more electric rickshaws emerging, South Asian cities are leaning towards eco-friendly solutions. That makes me think: how can we, as leaders, make choices that balance progress with sustainability in our own industries? I may not see auto rickshaws outside my window in the U.S., but the lessons they’ve taught me—about community, resilience, and adaptability—are universal. Have you seen this advertisement? If not, I highly recommend watching it. It’s powerful and thought-provoking, capturing more than just the visible narrative. While it portrays how only a woman might truly empathize with the experience of an expecting mother, it also subtly addresses a troubling reality: the reluctance many companies still have when it comes to hiring pregnant women. Consider this—having a family is, and should be, a deeply personal decision. Yet, how often do we hear anyone questioning a man about his plans to start a family? When was the last time a man was asked how he would handle work responsibilities alongside the demands of a newborn? These questions are almost never posed to men, revealing a glaring discrepancy. Organizations frequently emphasize their commitment to work-life balance, championing themselves as progressive and supportive. But when it comes to women, particularly those navigating pregnancy, these values often feel performative. The hesitation to hire or support expecting mothers exposes a double standard that undermines these claims. This advertisement challenges us to reflect on these issues. True workplace equity means applying empathy, respect, and fairness to all employees equally—regardless of gender, life stage, or family choices. It’s not enough for companies to declare their support; they must demonstrate it by aligning their actions with their policies. Let this ad be a catalyst for change. It’s time for organizations to break free from ingrained biases and ensure that support for work-life balance is not just a slogan, but an ingrained practice that embraces everyone.

Growing up, advertisements were another source of entertainment. Whether the spots on radio or the ones on Doordarshan. I think late 80s were the peak of advertising creativity in India. They used to have nearly 30-40 minutes of advertisements before Ramayan on TV. And I have seen people just watch the advertising and walk away! They produced stuff like the Run for Freedom, Mile Sur etc. that haven't been bettered.. The problem with most advertising is the standard script derived from Edward Bernays ( I think) where the client has a problem, uses the product and she is happy. In the 21st century is has become far more digital too. Indian advertising is basically a celebrity ( Virat Kohli/ Ranveer Singh and mostly Amitabh Bachchan doing something) vehicle. Hence it was refreshing to see the new Apple ad for M4 chip. Anyone who has used apple computers on apple silicon can easily relate to the performance focus. I did like the shorter version running on TV even better, but this is good. While on the topic of elections - with India and US going to elections in 2024 :  My prediction is this will be the last major set of elections where free-for-all tech, fake news, fake videos & social media will be allowed !  Unless the tech majors figure out technology solutions to problems that are caused by advancement in technology, governments are going to get into the act and maybe ban some of them. I am happy to share that I had Sanjeev Mohan Ex Gartner VP and Founder of Sanjmo and esteemed book author on my Bytes of Brilliance podcast where we discuss the future of data, meta data and AI. A lot of organizations see the value in data and untill recently there was a lot of data wrangling necessary to connect disparate data source. With Apache Iceberg we are getting closer to having that connective tissue where meta data is the new powerful tool to describe the data adding a meta data as a service layer in between corporate data sources. Had a captivating evening at the Subra Suresh Distinguished Lecture Series with Yann LeCun, VP & Chief AI Scientist at Meta. He shared insightful perspectives, but one particular slide resonated with me deeply. These are just my interpretations of his slide (and NOT what/how he explained it) 1) The ongoing debate of AI versus Humans can be overwhelming, but LeCun's message is clear - a human child learns more in 4 years than AI models. It's a reminder to embrace AI as an ally, not a threat. There's still a long journey ahead, so let's approach AI with curiosity and collaboration. 2) LeCun's presentation also shed light on the intricate beauty of the human body, showcasing the marvel of creation and its intricate systems. It prompts reflection on the existence of God/consciousness and the awe-inspiring capabilities of our being. A thought-provoking evening that encourages us to appreciate the evolving relationship between AI and humanity, fostering a mindset of curiosity and admiration. #AI #Humans #Innovation #Technology #ArtificialIntelligence
