India's quick commerce market is booming and is set to reach USD 40 billion by 2030. This surge is driven by consumer demand for fast deliveries, with 46% of consumers reducing their reliance on traditional Kirana shops. Quick commerce platforms are projected to capture 21% of total Kirana sales by 2024. Quick commerce refers to the delivery of consumer items in 10-30 minutes. Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart, and Flipkart Minutes are among the top quick commerce platforms in India. In contrast, Kirana stores, which historically dominated the Indian grocery market are now facing an existential threat. 82 per cent of Kirana consumers have shifted at least one-fourth of their grocery spend to Quick commerce. 🌟 The Value of Market Visits: A Lesson in Execution 🌟 I recently had the chance to spend a day with our local sales team in Bangalore market and during visit, team took me to a hypermart called Brigade, a huge Self Service store being serviced by a GT channel partner. This experience served as a reminder of how essential market visits are for ensuring flawless execution. During our time in the store, we focused on analyzing the consumer sell out price of Saffola Honey against our competitors. Post discovering the absence of price call out, one of our team members (sai kumar: TSE) took the initiative to check the pricing at the counter and made an important discovery: the stock inward that was supposed to happen earlier had not been executed correctly, leading to discrepancies in both quantity and consumer pricing. By addressing this issue quickly with the store manager, our team was able to secure an order of 45k including few more categories, an opportunity that might have otherwise slipped through the cracks without that crucial price check. Clear demonstration of one of Marico values- Bias for action. 💡 Key Takeaway: Aligning the team around a clear objective—like checking market execution— in this case focusing on price and RPI against a key competitor led us to uncover a larger issue that had a direct impact on sales. Market visits are not just about observation; they are about engaging with the market and ensuring we are executing flawlessly. INDIA has a huge MRP problem...? Following the revision of the Standards of Weights and Measures Act, 1997, the maximum retail price was first introduced in India in 1990. It's been 30+ years and we are far from perfecting it. But why? Well, because of these Culprits 🥸: - The Makers, Sellers, E-comm, Q-comm in the value chain add problems of Maximum Retail Price. What's the Problem👁️? : 1. Loose items such as fruits🍓, milk🥛, flour, grain, pulses, etc. have no MRP. - 70% of the population lives in rural geographies and mostly they buy unpackaged goods with no MRP. - These prices fluctuate every day and it is difficult to track them effectively. 2. Overcharging 🤑on MRP. - Overcharging can be unapologetically blunt by a retailer. They may simply say, that’s the price I charge. Take it or leave it. - While there are a few glib traders who overcharge by including service charges or taxes. 3. Legally Inflated MRP by the manufacturer to enable profiteering. 🤫 - Inflated MRP is seen either in special channels (e.g. price of Pepsi in Domino’s 🍕, goods at the Airport, etc.) or for less familiar commodities where market competition is low (e.g. replacement parts of a car 🚗) 4. Artificial discounting 🫴 on MRP. - This phenomenon started mostly for promotional purposes by e-commerce and modern trade giants. - Here a product of 100 Rs. (fair market price) has an MRP of 200 Rs. which is being sold at a 40% discount, at 120 Rs. So a customer who has actually paid 20% higher feels lucky that he/she got the goods at a 40% discount. 5. Service-based 🧑‍🔧 work has no pricing structure. - From fixing a water tap to connecting an LED light to advocating 🧑‍⚖️ a court case, there is absolutely no benchmark of price. - Most customers have zero idea about the cost of such services and there are high chances of getting duped in such a scenario. Learnings from my Past, highly relevant in today’s Retail Landscape Way back in 2013-2014, when Large Format Retail business started brewing up in India Market & the likes of Reliance Digital & Infinity Croma started showing up, I for the first time heard of these two fancy terms while attending a business meet @ Samsung HQ. Fully Ignoring these concepts, I went traditional way, pushing Inventories with LFR Partners same way as we used to do with General Trade. To my utter shock, it had a strong backlash & inventories got stuck heavily with LFR Partners with very less sell-out from stores. One would hardly realize those days, how these two terms would revolutionize & rule the Retail landscape in coming times & define the fate of Brands too in long run.  The terms were: GIMROF & GMROI. Now that a decade plus has already passed & Large format Retail contribution today stands at 50% plus, Retail Leaders fully realize how critical & non-negotiable these are to Sustain & Succeed in today’s business landscape. The Crux of these remain: To have most Efficient inventory management for their vast product portfolio.  GMROF – Gross Margin Return on Footage GMROF = (%GM) * (Total Sales of category from a particular fixture or area of store) / (Sq. Ft. Space of the fixture or area of store) Measures the inventory productivity by expressing the relationship between the retailer’s gross margin and the area allocated to the inventory.  Importance of GMROF o  Helps identify the profit generating areas within their retail stores. o  Helps Retailers to make informed decisions regarding the increasing or decreasing allocation of categories within the stores. o  Helps retailers to increase footfall in their stores, leading to higher sales and more profits.  o  Helps retailers optimize display during peak sell-out season allowing them to take advantage of the extra traffic.  GMROI – Gross Margin Return on Investment  GMROI in Retail is = Total Gross Margin earned in a period / Average inventory earned in the period GMROI or Gross Margin Return on Investment is a key metric to find out overall profitability of a store or channel. I was reading a recent interview with the CEO of #Realme Sky Li in which he mentioned a target of a 10% increase in sales in India this year based on the following strategy 1. regular launches of new products across different price segments to cater to diverse consumer needs. a. strategic focus on the mid high-end segment b. high-end innovations to mid-range handsets c. emphasizing design and performance for budget phones 2. a 10% increase in sales in India this year The strategy looks great as it practically covers all the bases. If they handle things well they can do it. Who can forget the entry of the brand? It was the fastest to hit the 100 million mark globally in 36 months. In comparison, #Xiaomi took 41 months, #vivo 44 months, #Oppo 55 months, and #Samsung 73 months. Even a brand like #Apple 48 months. While one can say that the market size when these brands, especially Samsung and Apple entered the market was much smaller and hence they took a longer time one has also got to appreciate that Realme entered a bigger but highly competitive market with the top 6 brands having a 74% share globally. A presence across different price segments is similar to Samsung's strategy, which should also work for them. Just don’t go above the middle of the mid-premium segment or the Rs. 42500 price point. Maybe 1 SKU for positioning. I want to share my thoughts on what could go wrong if they increase the number of SKUs to too many. 1. One of the reasons for Xiaomi’s decline in 2022 was the wide range of products. Be present across but don’t have too many SKUs. 2. There is an apparent weakness regarding their shipment and sales planning. In the last 9 quarters including Q1 2024, their shipment share has varied from 8% to 16%. In the case of Xiaomi when they had a large range in 2022 the year they slipped, their share varied between 16% and 23%. They corrected their strategy by reducing the SKUs and in 2023 the variation came down to just 4% (between 15% and 19%). Xiaomi was able to make a strong comeback. Too many SKUs can only make the existing supply chain issue worse. Last but not the least. * Don’t let someone else run the business for you. * Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. * Leave it to the Indian leadership team to take decisions.
