While leading a group at Microsoft, I made the biggest leadership blunder. I was overseeing a project which two large teams were working together to deliver. The leaders of both the teams were equally responsible & competent to deliver the project, so I assigned overall project ownership to both of them. Soon things fell off track with deliverables getting delayed. Both the leads worked hard, but things kept getting messier. On reviewing the issues, I figured out that none of the leads actually took ownership of any delay as each one assumed that it was the responsibility of the other. Since the group comprised of people all at the same level, I didn't have any hierarchical authority. I had no clue how to solve this. Finally my mentor enlightened me that I had made one of the most common mistakes - no single point of ownership. Unless ownership lied with a single person, these issues were bound to happen. He told me I was lucky to learn this lesson early in my career as many senior leaders also don't learn this until late. It has stuck with me to this day. GCCs have proven to be incubation centers for tech innovation and are the growth engines for Indian economy. #Data is one prime source of power (or otherwise) which decides future of any business. It’s a fundamental guiding light that illuminates most suitable way forward. Data correlation – often the missing link I found this interesting connection between broadband penetration and GDP. Who could have thought of that !! This was in ET Sept 10th edition that ran an article on increasing data consumption in the country. See image. I was in a review once with my CFO who asked if everything is going well in my account as she noticed that the profitability has been going down. She specifically enquired if there are service delivery issues or escalations. And she was spot on…There were issues. Customer Satisfaction and profitability are directly proportional. Another interesting aspect, I’ve found is wallet share and growth in a specific account. While common sense tells that the two should be directly proportional, it really depends on the baseline taken for comparison. On a small baseline, despite the account having grown, the wallet share might have gone down. This is because, someone else might have won a large deal that impacts your wallet share. I always believed that revenue growth and wallet share have to be seen in tandem as it tells a story of how the account is performing including how competition is performing. The other day, I was reviewing account plans for one of my clients and found that their NPS data did not correlate well with their customer personas. On deeper analysis, we found that the “promoters” in the NPS were not the project sponsors. Voila. Action was noted to tweak the relationship management priorities. Key lesson learnt is that, while the absolute metrics have to be reviewed, correlation of data points across metrics is where the real insight is. What’s your correlation story? After five years in a large company, I was eager to do something different. I have decided to venture into a nimbler and futuristic company (Tredence: www.tredence.com) Similar to the digital transformation a few years ago, I expect that the technology market will undergo a significant shift. This shift in AI and data will create a new category of services, much like the digital revolution did a decade ago. In simple terms, we are approaching a crucial turning point. As with any turn, the smaller, more agile entities will navigate quickly, while the larger ones will eventually catch up if they can maneuver the turn effectively. . I anticipate that Tredence will be at the forefront of creating this new category. It's not clear what will this be called or what shape will it take? In my mind, AI/data Services, primarily comprising three key components: - Data Preparation: Ensuring data is ready for analysis and utilization. - Model Development: Creating and training models, leveraging this data. - Model Industrialization: Scaling and integrating models into business processes. These services are poised to deliver disruptive advantages in terms of increased revenue, newer market, and hyper cost efficiency for their adopters. However, undertaking this transformation comes with inherent risks. Therefore, executing it responsibly with appropriate oversight will be paramount.
