Based on IDC data on price segment-wise shares, here are my observations: 1. The Entry Level segment has declined since Q2 2023. Analysts feel it should go up with the collaboration between chipset vendors and brands through their offering of sub Rs. 8500 5G smartphones. I have written a lot on the fact that I am not very confident of the success of this thought. To me in the long run the segment will decline. 2. The share of the basic segment in Q2 2024 was the same as in 2023. It did show a bit of a spike in Q1 2024. However, I would expect it to remain in this range or rather go down as and when 5G devices below Rs 8500 get launched. Being the largest it makes sense for brands to get their volumes from here. 3. The Entry premium segment has shown a good jump being an upgrade segment for the existing Basic category 5G customers and I would expect it to grow further. There is an opportunity for brands to target this segment which happens to be the second largest in volumes. 4. The Mid Premium segment is a small segment that has been between 3-5% since 2022. In Q2 2024 the entry Premium segment was pushed up at the cost of the Entry segment. I would expect something similar to happen here with a rise in the Mid Premium segment though in small %’s. 5. The premium segment has primarily N-1 and N-2 models of iPhones with some quantities of Samsung and OnePlus. This segment should also not grow and as such can be avoided by other brands till such time that they uplift their brand image. 6. The Super Premium segment is basically a segment for iPhones and Samsung presently. We can see it from the fact that its contribution came down from 9% to 7% between Q1 and Q2 2024 as both iPhone and Samsung sales in this segment took a hit. It will rise again in Q3, Q4 and Q1 when Apple and Samsung launch their new range of high end devices. 7. Vivo is the only brand which appears in the top 3 between the Basic and the mid premium segment

Q-Commerce overtaking traditional e-commerce? Currently we are seeing a big boom in terms of the different SKUs being sold in Quick commerce apps like Zepto, Blinkit, etc. - Atomberg Technologies 's fans - Sony's PS5 - Samosa, Chai and what not - Digital Gold from Jar! Zepto is in talks to raise $300m for its broader ecommerce play. While Swiggy is preparing to file for an IPO this year, incumbent Flipkart is readying its entry into quick commerce. Zomato has invested $240 million in Blinkit over the last one year. Taking a step back, the lines between quick commerce and traditional e commerce have started to become increasingly blurred with QCom pretty much catering to every needs! Also, multiple reports suggest that QCommerce can potentially become bigger than traditional e commerce in India!  Case in point : According to Goldman Sachs, the valuation of Blinkit is greater than Zomato's core food delivery biz! Non-grocery boom in Q-Commerce: Categories including beauty, toys, health and electronics are witnessing robust sales growth on quick-commerce platforms overall. While the overall base for the new categories is still small, aggressive expansion by these players is starting to ensure a dominant presence for these categories. Plus AOV is higher which also comes with better margins, making it a win-win! Case in point: Zepto - 2x sales MoM in segments such as toys and electronics accessories - Beauty category expanded 3x QoQ - ~15% of Zepto’s $1.2bn annualised gross sales currently comes from non-grocery products (Source: Goldman Sachs) For several D2C quick commerce has become the fastest growth channel as well as the platform with highest customer engagement This is definitely a positive for the consumers and the Q-Commerce players, but is everything on the up and up?   As the demand for space on quick-commerce platforms skyrockets, niche D2C cos in segments like FMCG, beauty and personal care, and health and fitness are agreeing to pay a 30-45% commission on sales, besides shelling out on advertising and discounting on these Q-Com platforms. On top of the commissions, brands are also regularly spending around 20% of their total sales on ads on the platforms, and discounting their products by about 20-25% (totaling 60-70% revenue!). This is in stark contrast to the 10-20% commission that large FMCG cos pay these platforms reflecting the intense competition for visibility. The brand's scale and comparison with competitors are crucial considerations when it comes to new listings. On the positive side, smaller D2C brands have seen 40-60% total revenue coming from Q-Commerce compared to ~10-20% from traditional ecommerce, which is surprising! Essentially, Q-com currently has a BIIIG Bargaining power against new D2C brands and can essentially make or break their businesses! This shift is sparking confidence among VCs and Angel Investors, who see clear, lucrative exit pathways as large conglomerates like 𝐇𝐔𝐋, Tata Consumer Products, and Marico Limited make strategic acquisitions and partnerships in niche categories. VCs see D2C brands as high-growth investments with validated product-market fit and differentiated offerings that attract today’s savvy consumers. Brands like Wellbeing Nutrition (acquired by HUL) and The Man Company (acquired by Emami) reassure investors that D2C ventures can scale rapidly and offer valuable exit opportunities for larger players. D2C brands, with their streamlined digital infrastructure, are built to bypass the costly, layered supply chains of legacy FMCGs. This agility allows them to reach consumers faster and more efficiently, in stark contrast to traditional giants like P&G or Unilever, who struggle to innovate at a similar pace. At the same time, e-commerce aggregators, like Mensa Brands acquiring 𝐕𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧 and around 10 other brands, are accelerating growth by investing in and scaling promising digital-first brands, enhancing exit potential and bolstering investor confidence. Who exactly is losing market share in the hotly contest grocery commerce? I thought it must be the now-not-so modern retail, but I'm not so sure. Zepto raised $665 Mn at a valuation of $3.6 Bn, and is in talks to raise $250 Mn more. And their cofounder and CEO Aadit Palicha recently commented that they can beat DMart - Avenue Supermarts Ltd on GMV in the next 12-18 months. Swiggy Instamart also is growing, and Blinkit is likely to be more valuable than their owner Zomato itself - so they are all doing well, even if Dunzo isn't. Sure, no idea what JioMart Digital is doing, but deep pockets. Same with Tata Digital and their weird assortment forced to converge on Neu. bigbasket.com is trying to unlearn and relearn, and it just might. And Flipkart Grocery and Amazon Fresh are also upping their game - launching faster deliveries, discounts, improved fill rates, and selection. So I wonder if it is the modern-trade players? The likes of More Retail Private Limited, Spencer's Retail, STAR BAZAR, and SPAR Retail that are suffering? The nearest Spencer's to me is definitely a sore sight, now reduced to a shell of it's former glory - I think they aren't even replenishing inventory now. And we all know what happened to Big Bazaar - Future Retail. But Dmart itself isn't doing half bad - with pareto presence in just 23 cities, and no presence in UP (except NCR), Bihar, and West Bengal, they have considerable headroom, still. And they haven't yet quite solved for ecommerce, so while The Ken says that they are lost, they may find their way, eventually? I also don't think that the real consumption is growing, if at all, it may even shrink with the K-growth. Thus, some one _is_ losing share. And if it is not modern trade, then is it the regional chains? The single kiranas? The corner-store? The hand-cart? I'm not entirely sure because this data is hard to organize, and get. Recently, Zepto's founder mentioned the potential for Zepto to surpass Dmart in sales. While ambitious, exploring why this might not be far-fetched is key! Both Zepto and Dmart need to grow through same-store revenue or opening new stores. Consider the numbers: - Zepto's dark store is around 3,500 sqft, while Dmart averages 41,632 sqft. - Zepto achieves INR 90k per sqft (assuming it is comparable to Blinkit), while Dmart reaches about INR 45k per sqft annualy. Zepto's smaller, agile dark stores allow for easier expansion than Dmart's larger stores. To maintain this edge, Zepto must keep its revenue per sqft significantly higher. A healthier revenue per sqft will address profitability concerns, ensuring sustainable growth. Improved procurement margins from brands, due to increased volumes, will be an added advantage. When you can have fast savings delivered right to your home, who needs decades of distribution loyalty? 📢 Distributor Body Alerts FMCG Companies to Quick Commerce Apps' Deep Discounting Concerns have been raised by the All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPDF), which represents more than 4 lakh retail distributors, regarding the growing risk of heavy discounting via fast commerce applications. AICPDF expressed concerns about these methods in an open letter to FMCG businesses, pointing out that they not only diminish brand value but also threaten the traditional retail environment, which has been developed over decades on trust and loyalty. Principal Apprehensions: Predatory Pricing: Upending long-standing supply chains. Unfair Competition: Physical retailers find it difficult to compete with steep markdowns. Supply Chain Breakdown: Unrealistic customer expectations put long-term relationships in jeopardy. The AICPDF has demanded that FMCG businesses step in right away to control pricing tactics and safeguard the long-term viability of its distribution partners. Dhairyashil Patil, National President of AICPDF, said, "We feel that such a disruption would be detrimental to all stakeholders and we hope to avoid drastic measures." The distributors have also reported possible infractions of India's e-commerce regulations to the DPIIT and the Commerce Ministry. This morning, I stumbled upon an article in The Economic Times: https://shorturl.at/eaF0Q. It’s fascinating to see a major e-commerce platform like Flipkart taking on the role of price regulator for brands. Their new policy, based on average settlements over the past two months, seems a bit out of touch, especially in a market where commodity prices change daily. Interestingly, FDI norms specifically prohibit e-commerce platforms from interfering in brands' pricing decisions. It’s enlightening to see that we’re not alone in dealing with this. Last month, the e-commerce platform decided to update their rate card, restricting brands from changing the selling prices of their products and so, the past one and a half months working with Flipkart have been quite an experience. It appears there’s a broader issue at play with this approach and I hope this callout reaches the right team at Flipkart. It would be great to see these issues getting resolved for everyone to get back to business as usual. Controversial View - Majority of the DTC brands in India are playing a losing game ⚡ Simply put here is why ? They have not yet adjusted their performance strategies or come to terms with the changes that Meta has introduced. Unfortunately agencies and marketing fraternity is playing catchup with the best practices in the west and that has hugely impacted the growth story of wider DTC in India. We are yet again slow in accepting changes, unlearning and relearning which also highlights the difference in the quality of talent. The ecosystem is scratching their heads as to why are brands not growing at the same pace as in the past ? Yes certain macro level game has changed, more competition for every product and category, the space is crowded but isn't that how every space/market evolves ? On the contrary - the ones who have really been agile, shifted focus to content/creatives, story telling and brand building are reaping benefits. Those who have not shied away from trying new partners/tools, re-building teams and organisation with skills which are needed. This might be because India was never exposed to TikTok Shop to begin with and brands here didn't see the impact it has had globally where marketplaces and Meta and Shopify have all been to put it mildly losing sleep. We live in an attention deficit world and every business today has to be a media or a content creation house. 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐬? Urban Indian consumers have massively adopted Quick Commerce over the last couple of years, proving skeptics of the model (myself included) wrong to some extent. The economic viability is still to be established though there are some positive signals on that front too. Moving into high margin and/or high value categories including electronics, apparel, homeware, toys & even gold, is the current big hope for all the QC players to attain profitability.   While there is anecdotal evidence of customers ordering phones, clothes and more, this move will entail a huge shift in their model in terms of location, number & size of dark stores, store-level assortments, and inventory optimization, which they have built & refined for grocery over the last few years. While the math of higher margin and AOV is undoubtedly attractive, the enormous operational challenges arising from differences in consumer behaviour, market structure & practices etc. will adversely impact profitability, and maybe even growth, as they figure out the new category dynamics (and deal with the response of the two elephants in the room!)   On the other hand, it appears that QC has been challenging Kiranas, which account for ~80% of grocery retail, in a way modern retail stores never did in the last 20+ years. With each of the major QC players having about 300-500 dark stores each, across ~ 30 cities, there is huge headroom to grow in grocery itself for several years. High order density and optimized assortments are key to drive profitability for QC, and orders/store seem to be growing, even as new stores open. With a great sense of pride and excitement, I am happy to announce that Ugaoo has raised a Series A round of 47 crores INR. Some mind blowing numbers on digital commerce - - Ecom festival last week seen $12 bn sale, growth of 23% - Quick commerce has grown by 280% in last 24 months - Flipkart’s ‘Big Billon Day’ attracted 33 cr users in 2 days I wonder as a nation of shopkeepers are we transiting to digital commerce too fast.
