Q-com all hunky-dory for D2C sellers? The triopoly (Blinkit, Zepto & Swiggy) in India has redefined the realms of commerce & distribution, especially in Tier 1 demand centres. In the supposed buyer-qcom-seller high octane supply chain arrangement, however, the seller centricity of most of these platforms is nothing short of rudimentary. Why, you ask? > Apply: The fight to get shelf space is nerve-wrecking & understandably so (limited supply, unlimited demand). Sellers queue up without any visibility of the status of their listing request for weeks & months. Agencies promise to pull a few strings internally & help ‘manage’ listings in exchange for a hefty sum. Intro to category managers is a favour worth a million dollars. > Commercials: ‘Bl’ works via region level resellers, ‘Ze’ is moving to a marketplace model & ‘Sw’ is upto I-don’t-know-what. All 3 work mostly on ‘MRP Markdown Model’ & have high resistance to working on commission% on net sales. Your MRP, discounts & SP may not align with their category margins. It’s very important to understand the UE before you start. Fun fact: In one of my discussions, the commission came out to be 109% of SP & it had to be iterated multiple times to the POC before it got reconfigured. No wonder few brands jack up their SPs. > Onboarding: Expect long trails of countless emails for cataloguing, NPI deets etc that lead to high margin of error. > Marketing dollars: Unlike other MPs, you need to either spend on the platform’s real estate to build traction or have crazy organic searches to ensure throughput & survive. You could be shown the door if the momentum rattles even for a bit. > Purchase Order fulfilment: The POs will be geographically spread across the major hubs & the PO size (qty) may not make commercial sense to fulfil with an appointment based delivery from your mother hub. Any shortage that gets reported at the time of GRN comes without any proof & the seller is expected to absorb the loss, if any. Same for RTV due to something as small an issue as slight fading of the barcode. > Seller portal: Don’t be surprised if I tell you that neither ‘Ze’ nor ‘Sw’ have any seller portal to check sales, revenue, inventory, returns, invoices, POs etc. Nothing. Zilch. You are really at the whims & fancies of your CM to give you any visibility. They may/may not respond to you. It’s a black box. If you’re not an important account for them, treat it like your crypto investment. ‘Bl’ however is miles ahead in this regard - full visibility & readily available reports for the seller to access anytime. PS: These observations are based on my own experiences & discussions with other fellow sellers in the ecosystem. Systems may have improved now & I may not be fully updated. Irrespective, seller exp will be pivotal to the success of qcom. It’s a game of the elite for the elite. Ayyappan R, former chief executive of Flipkart-owned Cleartrip, is set to launch a new quick-commerce retail venture and is in talks with venture capital firms Accel and RTP Global for a sizable seed funding, multiple people aware of the discussions told ET. Foodtech giant Swiggy submitted its first updated DRHP to SEBI on Thursday, aiming to raise Rs 3,750 Cr through an initial public offering. The public offering will consist of a fresh issue of shares worth Rs 3,750 Cr and an OFS of 18.53 Cr equity shares. Based on recent share purchases at approximately Rs 350 each, the OFS is estimated at around Rs 6,485 Cr, bringing Swiggy’s total IPO size to roughly Rs 10,000 Cr. Investors, including Accel, Coatue, Alpha Wave Global, Elevation Capital, Norwest Venture Partners, and Tencent, will participate in the OFS, with Accel India IV (Mauritius) Ltd offloading 1.05 Cr shares and Alpha Wave Ventures selling 55.73 Lakh shares. This comes days after SEBI approved Swiggy's DRHP through the confidential pre-filing route.
