In house solution or outsource? what would be your choice for developing a digital solution? Surprisingly enough, post covid, there is a trend of many #nbfc companies trying to build in house capability in the Digital ecosystem and Loan Origination solutions. Some have hired a full fledge IT team right from CTO to developers to architects and have either inhouse or out sourced the testing capabilities. During my discussion with some of these teams, the following are the reasons: 💡 Compete with FinTechs: Since the evolution of FinTech, the space has been innovating at lightening speed. This banking space has been disrupted again & again. Right from Digital evolution to API banking to LSP to colending etc. Thus FinTechs have been touch bearers of innovation & they had tech integrated as part of their business rather than outsourcing it. 💡 Agile Developments or ODC: Most of the IT vendors would be charging on the basis of manday for the change requests raise. Now this needs Approvals, negotiations, Scope finalization, development to production movement cycle etc. Its a very time taking process. Thus this becomes a waterfall method but in reality most of the NBFCs would need to be agile to keep innovating. This comes again at a cost of offsite Development center where vendors provide their employees to a client for getting their development done. 💡 Innovations & Product features: Generally, The vendor tries to cover 80-90% of the market requirement. Thereby innovations are very subjective and the risk is too high in the market like banking. However, once the vendor develops something cool, its generally since that then it is provided as out of feature after some point thereby allowing other competitors to benefit. 💡 Cost effectiveness: During covid when there was a big race for everyone to get Digital and be able to run the business, many customer who had not taken highest level of AMC contracts suffered alot. The CRs were taken much later and the time taken for delivery was exceptionally high. The customers who had deep pockets had to pay extra premium to get their Change request delivered or resources allocated. This, then triggered the question of high dependency on the vendors for things which need iteration and development again & again. Thus, the answer to all these questions was, like FinTech, lets onboard a team of developers & IT teams so as to be able to have control on Digital & LOS modules at least. The LMS is mostly a stable out of product which hardly requires Changes and hence an shelf product approach will help. It ensures secure transmission of payment details, authorizes transactions, and communicates the result to both merchant and customer. 🛠️ Components of Payment Gateway Process: 1️⃣ Transaction Authentication: Verifies payment details. 2️⃣ Authorization: Checks available funds or credit. 3️⃣ Settlement: Transfers money from customer to merchant. 4️⃣ Security & Encryption: Encrypts sensitive data to prevent fraud. 💰 The Fee Structure: Why Do Payment Gateways Charge? Payment gateway fees in India depend on the method: 1️⃣ Card Payments: Fees range from 1.5% to 3% of the total value, covering costs for the bank issuing the card, payment networks (Visa, Mastercard), and the gateway provider. 2️⃣ Net Banking: Typically 1% to 2%. Banks charge for providing the net banking infrastructure. 3️⃣ UPI Transactions: Often seen as free for users, but businesses may incur fees of 0.3% to 1%. As many of you might know, slice has now merged with North East Small Finance Bank (NESFB). As we complete two weeks as a merged entity, I wanted to share my perspective as an engineer at slice. The journey leading up to this merger has been an incredible learning experience. Being part of the team working on merger preparations gave me unique insights into how complex systems integrate while maintaining regulatory compliance. Each challenge we tackled added to our collective knowledge and prepared us for this transformative step. The transition from being a fintech to becoming a full-fledged banking institution has been fascinating, especially from an engineering perspective. Having worked with slice's robust systems that were built to align with RBI guidelines, I can say that our strong foundation in regulatory compliance has made these first two weeks smoother than one might expect, me included. That said, the merger brings its own unique set of engineering challenges and opportunities. We're not just maintaining systems anymore – we're building the future of digital banking. The intersection of slice's tech-first approach with NESFB's banking expertise creates an exciting playground for innovation while working within the established banking framework. What excites me most is being part of creating a new era in digital banking. These past two weeks have already shown me that we're not just adapting existing systems; we're building something new that combines the best of both worlds – the agility and innovation of a fintech with the trust and stability of a bank. PayU has secured approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to function as a payment aggregator, a development that places it among a group of notable fintech firms like Razorpay, Cashfree, Open, and EnKash. This authorization enables PayU to add new merchants to its platform. The RBI's decision follows a request made to #PayU in January 2023 to reapply for the license. Groww, a leading fintech unicorn, has achieved a significant milestone. The Reserve Bank of India has approved its function as a payment aggregator. This approval aligns the company with a cohort of fintech entities that recently garnered similar nods from the central bank. Financial figures for the company also tell a remarkable story. The startup experienced a staggering 260% surge in operating revenue to Rs 1,277 crore in FY23. Moreover, the company turned a profit of Rs 448.7 crore, starkly contrasting the Rs 239 crore loss posted in FY22. This development came after the RBI granted in-principle approval to 32 entities, including Khatabook, to operate as online payment aggregators in March of the previous year. We have crossed Rs100 crore disbursement to FPO in a financial year. 1000 FPOs directly or indirectly associated. We disbursed more than Rs200 crore in the BC model. Negligible incremental NPAs and Net NPAs continue to be zero. Not only with us with the BC bankers too.   More than 2lac farms have got digitised.
